<Title>Altered Books in UMBC&#8217;s Special Collections: When a Book Becomes a Canvas</Title>

    <p>We often think of books as sacrosanct – and as a librarian, I have to agree! Many people can't abide writing in, dog-earing, or otherwise defacing a book. But there are cases where changing the structure of a book can be a creative rather than a destructive endeavor. Enter the altered book.</p>
    <p><strong>What is an altered book? </strong>Altered books are "a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form," thereby changing both its functionality and its meaning. These alterations can be, according to book artist Barbara Pearman "as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture." Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to catalog two altered books for Special Collections. While they were very different from one another, each presented a similar cataloging challenge, and a similar opportunity to reflect on the meaning of printed books.</p>

    <div>Dear Graduate Students,</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The Office for Academic &amp; Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the months of June through August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session. Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! See more info here: <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/gspd/posts/147862/6b41e/9fcf23bdcf0261dde644bd6833db42c6/email/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fbadges.umbc.edu%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://badges.umbc.edu/</a>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Grad students on F-1 visas <strong>ARE </strong>eligible for this work and invited to apply!</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We are online offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just MIGHT be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and get paid! No RSVP necessary.</div>
