Rethinking the Return to “Normal” √ § Ͼ Part of the FDC Diverse Classroom Series!

On Tuesday, October 19th from Noon to 1:00 PM, The Faculty Development Center is hosting a virtual discussion regarding the inquiries, implications, and insecurities of a "return to normal" and would like to invite graduate students to attend. Below is a snippet of the content of the discussion:

Do you cringe at the thought of “returning to normal” this year? Even if not, 
is it surprising to learn that several students are bracing themselves for, or currently struggling with, what it means to “return to normal?” Let’s dig deeper into this phenomenon unearthed by the ongoing pandemic; flexibility and accessibility allowed for a more inclusive learning environment, yet now these privileges may be disappearing. This session in the Diverse Classroom Series asks participants to reflect on the ways the “normal” college classroom in 2019 may have oppressed our diverse student body. Participants will gain perspective on how the sudden universal need for remote learning “evened the playing field” for some learners, especially those with intersectional identities. Finally, this session will encourage participants to be cognizant of how they can challenge the meaning of returning to normal, for their classroom(s).

Training will continue this week into next week.


Training sessions happening on Thursday, September 29th at 11am and 3pm and on Monday October 1st at 10am and 1pm. These trainings provide the opportunity for GSO members to understand how GSOs operate, how they interact with the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and allow for students to ask questions about funding, hosting events and other important topics. Please fill out this registration form to attend a session. If you cannot attend either, please note that in the form so that another session time can be added.

The Center for Global Engagement and the International Education Week planning committee would like to invite you to participate in International Education Week (IEW) 2021 taking place November 15-19!

 

A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education, IEW is an opportunity for campuses to celebrate international education in all its forms: curricular, extracurricular, formal, non-formal and everything in between. International Education Week is for everybody!

 

The International Education Week committee is encouraging all areas of campus to get involved in IEW 2021. We want to celebrate our international community, support international initiatives on campus, and share international experiences with domestic students and communities they might not otherwise be exposed to. 

 

As you begin thinking about IEW, consider the following: 

  • Events come in a variety of forms, either virtual or in-person. Examples include: presentations, lectures on research or current events, activities (diy/fun), workshops and more. 

  • As you propose an event you will be able to indicate which audiences you would like to target. This could be faculty, staff, current students, prospective students (domestic and international) and/or the wider UMBC community. 

  • Interested in hosting, but not sure how to get started? The IEW committee is here to help you plan next steps. 


If you are interested in hosting an event during IEW 2021, please complete this Google Form. Event submissions will be due no later than Friday, October 8th if you wish for the event to be marketed as a part of IEW.

University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay A. Perman will host a town hall on campus this Friday, October 1, 2021, from noon to 1 p.m.  All students, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to attend in person or virtually to ask questions about UMBC’s upcoming presidential transition.

As he shared in his recent message to the UMBC community, the Chancellor is eager to hear about the background and experience that the UMBC community wants in its next leader, as well as thoughts about the future vision and priorities for the institution.

The MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition (MSCAC) aims to represent college students across the state and advocate for meaningful climate action, environmental justice, and to empower youth. They are a 100% student-run group with more than 200 active supporters and have representation from most Maryland public universities.

Each professor will have a breakout room and give a presentation about their subject matter and how it relates to climate change. The graduate students will give shorter presentations on their research, and share a breakout room. The event will start with introductions and end with a survey. 

Completing the survey makes students eligible to win the following prizes:

  • Campsite Reservation at Deep Creek Lake! (2 nights of your choice)

The Sustainable Age is a student journal founded by students of the North Texas Regional Center of Expertise Network. The journal is seeking volunteer student writers to submit original articles centered on the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.


This project is led by students for students. It is focused on educating and raising awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This student-led journal provides an environment for students from different universities across the world to develop academic research concerning different areas like Social Justice, Human Health and Well-being, Philosophy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, Climate Action, and Business. 


Writers can learn introductory level scholarly and peer-reviewed writing methods, supported by an editorial team of volunteer students, faculty, and staff. Every article published in the online journal is related to at least one SDG, is reviewed by at least one person of the editorial review team, and includes at least one cited reference using MLA format. The Maynard Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to collaborate on current funded projects. Our research involves the investigation of immunobiological factors that contribute to cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities and underserved populations. We also investigate the role of inflammation-associated P2 purinergic receptors in cancer initiation and aggressiveness . Specifically, projects are aimed at therapeutically targeting P2 purinergic receptors for the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer and characterizing P2 purinergic receptors in pancreatic cancer.
