This week we present the April Fool's edition of UMBC's Retriever newspaper known as The Deceiver and The Poodle.

The UMBC Retriever newspaper has a longstanding tradition of satirical April Fool's editions. In 1977, the paper published its very first April Fool's issue entitled The Poodle. The issue was filled with sarcastic and humorous articles including one naming the poodle as UMBC's new mascot and one stating that the SGA president and Physical Education Department were sponsoring a duel between two inmates from the Maryland Correctional Institution. Since then, The Retriever newspaper has published annual April Fool's issues during the week of April the 1st under the name The Deceiver. Amusing article titles over the years have included, "Student Bursts into Flame During Lecture," "Administration Building Stolen During Last Weekend," "UMBC Explodes," and "Giant Terrapin Attacks UMBC."

This week we present a page from The Retriever describing the Student People's Party in 1971.

In the spring of 1971, among the aspiring SGA election nominees were a group of students who had organized themselves as the People's Party. The party's goal was to completely redesign student life and the appropriation of funds on the UMBC campus with the hopes of expanding community and student development. Proposed programs included a more effective student book service, the establishment of a UMBC Day Care Center, and the creation of an abortion counseling service.

Though the party gathered popular support for their ideas, and even won election, once the Student People's Party was in office they were unable to accomplish what they had promised to do. Soon after, enough students pulled together to sign a petition that called for a re-election. The Student People's Party was swiftly voted out of office.

This week we present a bowling schedule from the 1968 UMBC duckpin bowling league.

UMBC's first chancellor, Albin O. Kuhn, worked hard to be an active figure in the UMBC community. One way he did this was by participating in a UMBC duckpin bowling league in 1968. The league consisted of various members of the UMBC community including faculty, staff, and their spouses. Chancellor Kuhn and his wife, Libby, can be seen on the above 1968 bowling schedule, under Team 5 and Team 3 respectively.

Presidents, Past & Present: A Biographical Portrait

<Tagline>New UMBC history exhibit in Special Collections</Tagline>

As UMBC celebrates its 50th anniversary, the university has a chance to reflect on its young but textured past. A new exhibit in Special Collections, Presidents, Past & Present: A Biographical Portrait, explores the lives and leadership of UMBC’s five university presidents and chancellors. These hardworking, intelligent men came from various backgrounds and achieved extraordinary success despite some facing tremendous odds. The personality and passions of each of these leaders has seeped into the character of UMBC, creating the diverse, bright, creative and entrepreneurial community that can be seen today. The exhibit includes the Ralph Coats Roe Award gold medal, awarded to Dr. Hrabowski by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2015.
