Hi all!

Hope your summers are off to a good start! Below, you will find information about the New England Future Faculty Workshop. Applications close on June 12th, 2023. If you are interested in applying, please visit the link here.

---

The New England Future Faculty Workshop (NEFFW) is a two-day event dedicated to preparing PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for faculty careers in academia. This event will be hosted virtually by Northeastern University (Boston, MA) on August 2nd and 3rd, 2023, and we invite graduate students and postdoctoral researchers as participants from across the country. A flier with more information is attached.

The goals of the NEFFW are to:

(1) increase representation of scholars from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds

(2) provide professional development opportunities for cultivating future faculty applicants

(3) offer personalized feedback on application materials

(4) develop support networks for future mentorship

Underrepresented populations in Faculty positions in Academia include women, racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, first-generation students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Last year, we hosted 182 participants from over 74 institutions across the globe.

This year we aim at cultivating the relationships we created in the past years while expanding our reach to students and researchers with diverse identities coming from institutions not only in the New England area but also in the whole country and the world..

As a part of the NEFFW event, participants will have access to focused panel sessions, review of their application materials (CV, cover letter, research, teaching, and diversity statements), personalized feedback, affinity group discussions, and the opportunity to meet fellow graduate students and postdoctorates across a variety of institutions from different disciplines. Topics discussed will include institutional fit, developing research, teaching, and diversity statements, interviewing skills, negotiation, mentoring, time management, and planning for their first year as faculty.

You can apply to register for the event here.
Important Summer Considerations and Documents

Hi Everyone,

I hope the end of your semesters are going well as we go into the last few weeks of class as well as preparing for finals. Below is information from the Graduate school regarding Summer Residency and Summer registration and options for Graduate Students. Please see the attached documents as well!

Summer Residency Clarification

The Graduate School will begin working on GA Residency Exception review for the summer semester in the next couple of weeks. Our goal is to identify students who were GA's and had residency exceptions in the past term but are no longer GA's for the current term. GA's who do not have a contract for the summer semester will be changed back to out-of-state or billing purposes unless their official status is "in-state" resident. If a GA will be returning in the fall semester, once their fall appointment letter and tuition remission forms are received, the Graduate School will change their residency status back to "in-state" for billing purposes.

Summer Registration Requirements and Options for Graduate Students: FICA-Exemption

All graduate students employed and not enrolled in at least 3 credits in the summer while on a Graduate Assistantship are subject to FICA taxes on their earnings.

If domestic Graduate Assistants are not registered for at least three (3) credits at all times during the summer, the Graduate Assistant and the supporting department will each pay approximately 7.65% of the student's gross pay each pay period as FICA.

International Graduate Assistants with F-1, J-1, M-1, or Q-1 immigration statuses MAY be FICA-exempt but should consult the information in the following links, to determine eligibility for exemption:
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-student-liability-for-social-security-and-medicare-taxes
