for help. I used to be painfully shy so I would always try to figure
out how to do things on my own, even when I had no idea how to do it,
and would never ask for help. At one dark point in my life, I knew that
if I didn't ask for help, I might not survive. And so I was forced to
ask, and I try to remember that asking for help is the greatest gift I
can give myself because I then get to work with some incredible people
as a result.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: Just
one? Well, I think the thing I'm most proud of recently is UMBC's new
Americorps/VISTA project that came about as a result of some great work
students did in my Honors seminar, Race, Poverty and Gender in
Baltimore. College JUMP is a mentoring and college readiness program for
high school aged refugee youth in Baltimore City and County and the
program was partly designed by students in my class. Now, College JUMP
is off and running, led by Sondheim/Honors alum Christie Smith in
conjunction with the Refugee Youth Project, and has 18 mentees and 15
mentors. This matters because the students in my class can see the
real-world impact of a class project that has the potential to
positively affect so many people--the refugee youth, their families,
their communities and the UMBC student mentors. Little by little, we
each make a great impact in this world and I'm glad I was able to help
this program happen.

A: During
a program for a new partnership I'm helping to create with Baltimore
City, I was recently on the Library 7th floor with a group of Baltimore
City public high school students and one of the students noted the view
from the windows. I'm up there so often that I forget how incredible the
view is, and so we stood there together for a minute and picked out
some distant Baltimore landmarks together. As two people who love
Baltimore so much, it was a nice way for us to connect and to look at a
spectacular view. It also reminded me to look up sometimes!

Amgen Scholars Program, MIT summer research program

<Tagline>A summer research program in science and biotechnology</Tagline>

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a participant in the
Amgen-UROP Scholars Program for a tenth year. UROP is MIT’s
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. The mission of the
Amgen-UROP Scholars Program is to provide students with a strong science
research experience that may be pivotal in their undergraduate career,
cultivate a passion for science, encourage the pursuit of graduate
studies in the sciences, and stimulate interest in research and
scientific careers.

During the summer 2015 program, MIT hosted 15
visiting scholars who engaged in research under the supervision of MIT’s
foremost faculty and leading researchers. In addition to the visiting
scholars, five MIT undergraduates participated in the program. Over the
past nine summers, 232 students have conducted research through the
Amgen-UROP Scholars Program.

They are now soliciting applications
for students to engage in research as part of the summer 2016 Amgen-UROP
Scholars Program. While spending a summer in Boston and
gaining research experience, students will be paid a stipend; room,
board and transportation to and from Boston will also be covered by
their appointment. All students will live on-campus in an
undergraduate residence. This community of young scholars will share in
the excitement of research by participating in a faculty-led seminar
series, workshops, poster session and a mid-summer symposium at UCLA
(travel, room and board are covered).

MIT is delighted to invite
undergraduate students from other colleges and universities to join our
research enterprise. We value the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm
these young scholars will bring to campus and appreciate this
opportunity to build a relationship with other faculty and campuses.

Congratulations to Honors Faculty Fellow Dr. Shawn Bediako

<Tagline>Dr. Bediako receives faculty advancement award</Tagline>

Shawn Bediako, Associate Professor of Psychology, has been named the
inaugural recipient of the Marilyn E. Demorest Award for Faculty
Advancement. This annual award is provided through an endowment
established by Marilyn E. Demorest, Professor Emerita of Psychology and
former Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, to support the advancement of
all UMBC faculty members in their academic careers; to facilitate their
professional development; and to recognize their contributions to
faculty advancement and success at UMBC.
Dr. Bediako
is recognized for his deep commitment to fostering the professional
excellence and career advancement of a wide range of faculty and
postdoctoral scholars at UMBC and beyond. His mentoring activities
emphasize methods that enhance scholarly productivity and support a
meaningful work/life balance. Most recently, in collaboration with
Claudia Galindo (LLC), Brandy Wallace Harris (SOCY/ANTH), and Angelica
Herrera (formerly of SOCY/ANTH), Dr. Bediako created the UMBC Summer
Writing Accountability Group (S.W.A.G.) to help participants maintain
their work/life balance and increase their research and writing
productivity within a supportive community environment. Over the course
of 19 weeks, a total of 60 faculty, administrators, and instructional
staff collectively logged more than 1,800 hours of writing time toward
advancing their manuscripts, book chapters, and monographs.

During
his tenure as the Demorest awardee, Dr. Bediako will work closely with
the Faculty Development Center (FDC) to offer a series of faculty
development workshops during the Spring 2016 semester that will help
faculty and instructional staff members:

Learn why and how to align institutional priorities, personal values, and long-term goals

Avoid the time management mistakes that many faculty and instructional staff make

Develop a consistent daily writing routine to increase research and scholarly productivity

Develop a network of support and accountability for academic writing.

Also,
Dr. Bediako will consult with Dr. Linda Hodges, Director of the FDC,
and other experts on campus to identify the best methods for assessing
the effectiveness of the workshops. The evaluation results will be used
to determine if this form of professional development should be
institutionalized to further promote an intellectual sense of community
at UMBC.

Dr. Bediako is a leader in the field of
community health psychology and is internationally known for his
research on the clinical implications of sickle cell disease stigma and
its impact on health-related outcomes. His honors include, among others,
the Innovator in Academic Hemoglobinopathies Research Career
Development Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of
the National Institutes of Health and the Champion Award from the Sickle
Cell Disease Association of America. He also is a member of the UMBC
Executive Committee on the Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement of
Underrepresented Minority Faculty and one of the founders of the UMBC
Postdoctoral Fellowship for Faculty Diversity.

“I am
deeply honored to be the first recipient of this award. Dr. Demorest’s
generous gift will provide an opportunity for me to collaborate with
faculty colleagues across campus and find innovative ways to align our
personal and professional goals with the institution’s vision” says Dr.
Bediako. “I’m particularly excited about the possibility of partnering
with our Faculty Development Center to complement their program and
services.”

Dr. Demorest admires UMBC for its
commitment to academic integrity, to diversity and the overall success
of all of its students. “I am very proud of UMBC and what it has
accomplished in the last 50 years,” says Dr. Demorest. “[There are] good
reasons why we’ve been the number one up-and-coming national university
in the country.” With her gift to UMBC, she hopes that this legacy can
continue through the next 50 years.
