Anjali DasSarma '21 Media and Communications Studies major with a minor in Journalism.

September 3rd, 2019

Hi there! I’m Anjali, and I’m a Humanities Scholar here at UMBC. I’m studying abroad this Fall 2019 at King’s College of London in England. King’s College is one of the top universities in the world. I’m very excited, and I can’t believe that my study abroad is about to begin. At UMBC, I am involved with The Retriever, as well as my scholars program. I also freelance for a music journalism blog called Balloon Machine, and read a whole lot of news.

With only a week left to go, the realization has set in: I have to pack all of my clothes into one suitcase, pick it up, and carry it around the world to my new apartment in the center of London.

While at King’s, I’ll be writing these blogs, writing for The Retriever (as I’m the Opinions Editor currently), and taking several classes. Since I have the opportunity to explore other disciplines, this semester I’ll be taking a film class as well as a culture course. I’m really looking forward to doing some photography and a whole lot of writing and finding some lovely cafes to spend my days.

I’m going to be living in a very urban environment, much different from UMBC Hilltop Circle. Though I lived in Beijing once before when I was younger, this is sure to be a different experience. I’m living just a few blocks away from Big Ben, Parliament and more. That’s another thing I’m looking forward to. Being in such an important and large city, I have a lot to learn and explore.

This is a very interesting time to go to London. As many of you probably know, Brexit is underway. Boris Johnson stated that on October 31st, Brexit will occur, “do or die.” While I’m in the UK, I’ll be sure to try to dissect and analyze this complicated issue to make sure students at UMBC understand the impact of this historic event. It’s going to hit close to home for me, as there are protests underway on the very bridge I’ll be crossing to get to my campus.

The academics at King’s are sure to be challenging. In the UK, the academic system is set up a bit differently. Firstly, what we call “courses,” are called “modules.” Modules are judged by one or two very large assignments. And that’s it! No extra credit, no pleading emails, no easy homework grades. It’s going to be quite an adventure, and I’m going to be studying much of the time.

Luckily I was able to procure my own apartment, which means I can study in my room at any time of day or night without bugging my roommate. However, I don’t have a meal plan, and I do have to share a kitchen with 4-9 different people. I’m going to be doing a lot of cooking! Stay tuned for lots and lots of meal prep… And I mean a lot.

Between the nightlife and the theatres and more, London has a lot to offer, and I’m going to do my best to balance everything, including my boyfriend back home, to have the best time ever! I hope you’ll join me:-) Talk soon!

Between the nightlife and the theatres and more, London has a lot to offer, and I’m going to do my best to balance everything, including my boyfriend back home, to have the best time ever! <Tagline>Chance occurrences lead scholar to Nanzan University</Tagline>

Through a series of chance occurrences, De’Jia Long Hillie developed an admiration for Japan. Experiencing Japan for five days in eighth grade made twelve-year-old De’Jia realize the world was filled with unknowns, and she sought knowledge. Born in Detroit, raised in Maryland, De’Jia set her eyes on studying Japanese in high school. As her mom prepared for their move to Maryland, De’Jia asked to attend a high school offering Japanese. She participated in quiz bowls sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Washington, DC that motivated her to continue studying Japanese.

De’Jia is a senior pursuing a B.A. in Global Studies with a concentration in International Affairs and a Political Science minor. De’Jia is grateful for the Watanabe scholarship because she believes every hard-working student should have the opportunity to embark on an adventure free of financial stress. De’Jia strives to encourage her younger cousins to reach for their dreams. She is attending Nanzan University participating in the intensive Center for Japanese Studies program this Fall 2019. As someone who wants to pursue a career promoting cultural exchange, studying in Japan will aid her ability to connect and empathize with people different from herself.

Dawg Days Abroad! Lexi Smith Ambassador

<Tagline>Blog Post from a Freshman Humanities scholar</Tagline>

Lexi is an incoming UMBC Humanities scholar freshman who will be studying abroad this summer before fall semester even starts! She's participating in Education Abroad's first-ever Dawg Days Abroad program in Bristol, England. Get to know her in her first blog post!

29 July 2019

Hello! My name is Lexi and I can’t wait to begin my time as a Study Abroad Ambassador in the UK! I am an 18-year-old incoming freshman at UMBC who has been dreaming of a life full of travel since middle school. Though I’ve left the U.S. once before, this will be my first time visiting Europe. I’m excited to learn more about the world around me while on this trip, as well as political science, as I will be taking POLI260 at the University of Bristol over the course of these next few weeks.

At UMBC, I am planning on double-majoring in history and economics. History has been an interest of mine since I was in elementary school (I’ll probably cry when I see the Magna Carta, if we’re keeping it real). Economic systems and markets are newer fascinations of mine, but I am excited to learn about both! When I’m not reading dusty primary sources or scrolling through CNN, you can typically find me dancing at my studio, performing onstage, pulling lines with a calligraphy pen, taking photos, or goofing off with my friends at youth group.

British history was one of the first subjects I fell in love with, so I feel as though I’m coming into this program with a decent amount of knowledge about my host country, but I know that my knowledge base is a drop in the ocean compared to all that Bristol and London have to offer. I am eager to learn more, especially as the UK enters into a period of change due to Brexit and the recent election of a new Prime Minister. During this trip, I hope to gain more experience with international travel, a new perspective through meeting those who are different from me, and more knowledge about the world around me. I am most excited to visit the historical sites on our itinerary, especially Caerphilly Castle. As silly as it sounds, I’m most nervous about forgetting something important on the trip! Despite my love for planners and lists, I am naturally quite absent-minded and awful at remembering to bring everything I need when I travel. Fortunately, I just returned from a mission trip to Rhode Island, so the majority of my suitcase is still packed.

I can’t wait to learn, grow, and experience a new place for the next two weeks! The next time I reach out, it will be from the wonderful city of Bristol. Until then, I must extend my farewell. Check back in again soon for a new update or two!

Anjali DasSarma to The Baltimore Sun's Readers Respond

<Tagline>BSO musicians are the ones who are suffering</Tagline>

Reprinted from The Baltimore Sun June 15, 2019

As a humanities student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, I feel a very close kinship with both Baltimore and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. I actually had a marketing internship at the BSO lined up for the summer that I was extremely excited for.

Unfortunately, as many readers of The Baltimore Sun know, the BSO was forced to cancel much of its summer programming and had to rescind my internship offer (“With abrupt summer cancellation, ‘West Side Story’ is the last BSO performance until fall,” June 7).

Now, this issue of declining support for the arts is not limited to nor has it begun with the BSO. However, I’ve lived in Maryland my whole life and I’ve always felt that our state supported the arts. I state all this just to say that the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra matters. I’ve been following the Baltimore Sun’s coverage of all this in horror. I hope Gov. Larry Hogan will release the “fenced in” funding that the BSO needs to continue its wonderful programming.

Other articles on The Baltimore Sun site have acknowledged the same truth that Governor Hogan should acknowledge: The musicians are the ones who are suffering from the poor management. And the consequences of poor management should not fall on the people who are doing their jobs and are hard-working and talented.

There needs to be a serious examination into what’s going wrong with the BSO and I realize that’s what was meant to happen this summer with Del. Maggie McIntosh’s bill, HB 1404. This issue is definitely multifaceted and there’s plenty of blame to go around within the management and also within the governor’s office. However, in the wake of the announcement of summer programming cancellation, I can see who is getting hit by the worst of this and it’s certainly not the management.

Though Baltimore has it’s fair share of problems, the BSO is undoubtedly one of the things that makes the city wonderful. Please don’t let this issue fall by the wayside.

Sign Anjali's petition to Governor Hogan at change.org
