    <div>Christopher Slaughter '23, M31 computer engineering, has won a <a href="https://www.gatescambridge.org/about/news/first-2023-cohort-of-gates-cambridge-scholars-announced/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Gates Cambridge Scholarship</a> to pursue graduate work at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom next fall. Slaughter is the <a href="https://ur.umbc.edu/prestigious-scholarships/cambridge-scholars/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">fifth student from UMBC</a> to be recognized with the prestigious award, established by the University of Cambridge in 2000 with a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. <span>Gates Cambridge Scholars are selected from around the world for their academic talents and commitment to improving the lives of others. Each year around 25 of the 80 total awards are offered to students from the United States.</span>
    </div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div>Guided by a passion for improving people's lives, Slaughter began his first of many biomedical research projects. At UMBC's Bioelectronics Laboratory, he worked on technology to help patients who are insensitive to pain avoid burns. Most recently, he has been working at UMBC's <a href="https://cast.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Advanced Sensor Technology</a> (CAST) in the lab of Govind Rao, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Slaughter will pursue a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Cambridge, which is the world's third oldest surviving university, founded in 1209. His career goals are to develop novel biomedical technologies that meet the healthcare needs of under-resourced communities.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Slaughter was named a <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/four-umbc-students-receive-goldwater-scholarship-for-stem-research-tying-prior-record/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Goldwater Scholar</a> in 2022, recognizing him among the top engineering students in the nation. He is president of the <a href="https://nsbeumbc.weebly.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers</a> and, through volunteering at local schools, encourages middle and high school students to develop technical skills and aspire to careers in science and technology. In addition, he serves as the vice president of the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/ieee" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers</a> and the <a href="https://recreation.umbc.edu/club-sports/club-directory/tae-kwon-do/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Club Taekwondo</a> team. He also serves as the lead peer advisor in the <a href="https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholars Program</a>, responsible for organizing events and managing peer advisor relationships across the program.</div>

    <div>We present our security analysis of three cyber-physical systems in UMBC’s new smart Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB): the access control system, the surveillance system, and the atrium&amp;#39;s electrical system. Supported by reconnaissance and reverse engineering, we identify potential vulnerabilities, attacks, and risks, and make recommendations. Conducting reconnaissance and reverse engineering activities on academic cyber-physical infrastructure is currently an insufficiently researched area, unlike critical infrastructure such as smart power grids and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This project identifies how susceptible three cyberphysical systems in ILSB are to cyber attacks, and the significance of each attack to the relevant system. Without completing a full analysis and reconnaissance of the building, the DoIT and facilities manager cannot be sure how the online sensor infrastructure interacts with the physical infrastructure. Typically, academic spaces are more physically accessible than are industry equivalents, primarily due to the public nature of universities, which encourages unfettered access to buildings for the sake of collaboration and student freedom. This level of access, however, also expands the potential attack surface by opening up the university to cyber attacks performed via physical methods. Our group discovered multiple attacks on the three cyber-physical systems, produced recommendations to the university, and identified additional analysis that can be performed to secure the cyber-physical infrastructure further. Our group additionally created mappings of target systems that include interface details and connection types. After creating reconnaissance artifacts, we identified vulnerabilities within the target systems and vulnerabilities within the target system configurations.</div>

    <div>Vulnerabilities we found include an authenticated command injection attack, and an unauthenticated denial of service on the webserver that hosts the physical access control system. Both vulnerabilities could be conducted by an adversary with a moderate level of effort and would enable the adversary to control the access control system, approving or denying access outside of normal operations. On the camera system, one attack we found is an incomplete client-side validation.  Exploitation of this vulnerability requires more effort and would allow the adversary to inject arbitrary commands, including deleting camera footage.</div>

    <strong>Andrea Ferketich</strong> is an employee at JHU APL, working as a task leader for US Navy combat systems cybersecurity integration with tactical systems.     <div><strong>Application Criteria</strong></div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Applicants must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents (citizens preferred)</li>
    <li>Full-time rising juniors, MS, MPS, or Ph.D. students in cybersecurity-related programs at UMBC (including CMSC, CMPE, IS, CYBR). CMSC students (both BS and MS) must be enrolled in the CMSC cybersecurity track.</li>
    <li>Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.</li>
    <li>Must agree to comply with NSF, OPM, SFS, and UMBC policies regarding the SFS program.</li>
    <li>Must agree to conduct at least one summer internship with the federal government while an SFS Scholar.</li>
    <li>Must agree to work for the government after graduation for each year of scholarship funding received. Failure to obtain government employment will result in having to pay back the entire amount.  Government is broadly defines as federal, state, local, or tribal (federal preferred).</li>
    <li>Must not have anything in their background that would disqualify them from obtaining a federal government security clearance.</li>

<Title>Dr. LaBerge Wins Prestigious Award</Title>

    <p><span><a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/people/professor-of-practice/e-f-charles-laberge/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Chuck LaBerge</a>, Professor of the Practice of CSEE
    at UMBC and immediate past Chair of RTCA SC-222, has been named the 2022 winner
    of EUROCAE Global Harmonization Award for his "commitment and excellent
    contributions to EUROCAE <a href="https://www.rtca.org/sc-222/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">WG-82/RTCA SC-222</a> New Air-Ground Data Link
    Technologies." </span><span>  </span><span>The award, which was
    announced at the 2022 EUROCAE Symposium in Warsaw in April, 2022, was presented
    on behalf of the EUROCAE Council by Mr. Al Secan, Vice President of <a href="https://www.rtca.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">RTCA</a>, Inc.
    at the quarterly meeting of the RTCA Program Management Committee on September
    15, 2022.</span><span>   </span><span>In his comments during the
    original video presentation of the award in April, Mr. Secen commented on "[Dr.
    LaBerge's] ability and skill in leading the committee through a rose garden
    full of thorny issues."</span></p>
    
    <p><span>Dr. LaBerge has participated in RTCA, <a href="https://www.eurocae.net/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">EUROCAE</a>, and
    <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Civil_Aviation_Organization" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ICAO</a> standards-setting activities since 1976, playing a significant role in the
    development of more than 16 standards, plus nearly that number of revisions and
    updates to account for changing technology.<span> 
    </span>These standards include those for all of the safety-related digital
    communications used by modern airliners, including HFDL, VDL </span><span>Mode 2, VDL Mode
    3, Inmarsat and Iridium satellite communications for both data and voice.</span><span>   </span><span>In addition, he was responsible for the
    interference analysis that forms the basis for the standards that permit use of
    WiFi onboard passenger-carrying aircraft.</span><span> 
    </span><span>From October 2008 through July 2021, he served as the chair of <a href="https://www.rtca.org/sc-222/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">RTCA
    SC-222</a> Aeronautical Mobile Satellite (Route) Service systems which developed
    multiple standards (and revisions) for systems and equipment used " ... to ensure safety
    and regularity of flight on national and international air routes." </span><span> </span><span>SC-222's work was conducted in collaboration
    with EUROCAE WG-82 on New Air-Ground Data Link Technologies, chaired by Dr.
    Armin Schlereth of the DFS (the German equivalent to the FAA.)</span></p>
    
    <p><span>Dr. LaBerge is the recipient of the 2018 UMBC <a href="https://redirect.cs.umbc.edu/2018/05/dr-laberge-receives-inaugural-coeit-2018-excellence-teaching-award/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">College
    of Engineering and Information Technology award for Excellence in Teaching</a> and
    the 2020 <a href="https://facultystaffawards.umbc.edu/home/2020-excellence-in-teaching-laberge/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award for Teaching
    Excellence</a>.<span>  </span>He teaches a variety of
    professional practice and communications-related courses in the Computer
    Engineering program.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>EUROCAE was founded as the European Organization for
    Civil Aviation Electronics in 1963 with the object to develop standards for
    European civil aviation. It plays an important role in coordinating European
    and global standardization activities.<span> 
    </span>In recent years, an increasing number of EUROCAE Working Groups work
    collaboratively with their RTCA counterparts. </span></p>
    
    <p><span>RTCA was founded as the Radio Technical Committee for
    Aeronautics in 1935, RTCA has provided the foundation for many modern technical
    advances in aviation. An independent Standards Development Organization (SDO),
    RTCA's comprehensive products serve as the basis for government certification
    of equipment used by the tens of thousands of aircraft flying daily through the
    world's airspace.<span>  </span>In recent years, an
    increasing number of RTCA Special Committees work collaboratively with their
    EUROCAE counterparts.</span></p>

This work earned the designation of one of the best papers in the Computing Education Research Track at the 2023 <a href="https://sigcse2023.sigcse.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SIGCSE Technical Symposium</a>.</div>

    <div>Since 2015, the Cybersecurity Assessment Tools (CATS) project has been developing two research instruments to measure how well students learn cybersecurity concepts: the Cybersecurity Concept Inventory (CCI) and the Cybersecurity Curriculum Assessment (CCA). The CCI measures student conceptual knowledge after a first course in cybersecurity, whereas the CCA measures student knowledge after a full curriculum on cybersecurity. In this talk, we will discuss our development process of both assessment tools. We will discuss how we identified the critical subset of cybersecurity topics to include on the assessments and how we constructed the items on the assessment. We will then focus on our administration of the CCA to 193 students from seven colleges and universities across the United States. We present qualitative and statistical evidence for why the CCA can be validly used for measuring student knowledge of cybersecurity. In particular, we will show how items on the CCA identify common student misconceptions and how the CCA is the most informative assessment tool developed by computing education researchers.</div>

    <a href="http://publish.illinois.edu/glherman/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Dr. Geoffrey L. Herman</strong></a> is the Severns Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was the 2020 recipient of the IEEE Education Society Mac Van Valkenburg Early Career Teaching Award and the 2022 recipient of the Scott H. Fisher Computer Science Teaching Award. He helped found the Grainger College of Engineering's Strategic Instructional Innovations Program, which has been empowering faculty innovation in teaching for over ten years and has provided seed funding that has led to several millions of dollars in external grant funding and hundreds of research papers. His research focuses on how students learn engineering and computing concepts and studying processes for creating systemic change in how engineering and computer science are taught in college settings. His research on student misconceptions in programming was awarded the best paper in the first 50 years of the ACM Special Interest Group, Computer Science Education.     UMBC CSEE faculty member and Associate VP for Research Development <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/people/faculty/don-engel/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Don Engel </a>and his family saw his father, Peter "Pete" Engel, graduate from UMBC in December with a bachelor's degree in history. <div><br></div>
    <div>Peter Engel graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1972 and went on to get a law degree there. When he retired two years ago, he enrolled in UMBC's Golden ID program, which allows seniors to take courses tuition free.</div>
    <div><br></div>

    <p><span><strong>HOW</strong></span></p>
    <p><span><a href="https://app.smarterselect.com/programs/85548" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Apply online</strong></a> by February 14, 2023</span></p>
    <p><span><strong>WHAT</strong></span></p>
    <p><span>Discover AI is a <strong>virtual program</strong> that provides students with a project-based introduction to computer science, machine learning, data, artificial intelligence, and tech careers through the lens of societal and ethical impact. In addition, students get access to AI industry leaders and are guided through a roadmap to cultivate a future career in the AI industry.</span></p>
    <p><span>What are both the positive and negative implications of AI technology on society? How can (and does) AI affect communities in today's world? Through research, discussions, and reflection, you will explore the intersectionality of AI with other fields and articulate your own mindful perspective of AI. The program is facilitated at <strong>no cost to students</strong>.</span></p>
    <p><span>Students that complete the program will emerge with actionable next steps in pursuing an academic or career path in AI  and the opportunity to continue in the following semester to our second program, Apply AI and direct mentorship from industry leaders in the AI and tech industry from companies like  Google, Capital One, Facebook, Slalom Consulting, Accenture, Pearson and more. At the end of the program, </span><span>students receive a </span><strong>Certificate of Completion</strong><span> and access to the </span><strong>AI4ALL Changemakers community</strong><span> with additional resources, ongoing support and mentorship.</span></p>
    <p><span><strong>WHO</strong></span></p>
    <p><span>It's available for undergraduate first-year students, sophomores, and juniors </span><span>with all coding and/or computing/AI levels, including everything from no experience to advanced. </span><span>If you're a computing major, the program is a great supplement to your existing coursework. If you are not, we welcome you as well! If accepted, you will have the opportunity to learn more about artificial intelligence in a safe and thoughtful environment that offers you the chance to consider AI as a future career option and as a presence in your major industry/discipline. </span><span>We recommend that students without a coding background take the first four modules for free </span><a href="https://learning.edx.org/course/course-v1:IBM+PY0101EN+2T2021/home" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>here</strong></a><span> at EdX before the program begins. </span><span>AI4ALL programs are designed to bring together and highlight voices that have been historically excluded and that will lead and shape the future of AI. </span></p>

    <p><span>The ten-week program starts on February 24 and includes both synchronous meetings on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 pm as well as asynchronous instruction.</span></p>
