    <p>The latest issue of <a href="https://umbc.edu/magazine-home/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Magazine</a> features CSEE Ph.D. student  <a href="https://meyerhoffgrad.umbc.edu/janerra-allen/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Janerra Alle</a>n who is working with Professor <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/people/faculty/fow-sen-choa/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fow-Sen Choa</a> on advancing and applying brain imaging research.  Janerra is a first-generation college student from Brooklyn, a student leader, and a <a href="https://meyerhoffgrad.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Graduate Fellow</a>.</p>
    
    <p>She recently presented <a href="She%20recently%20presented%20research%20results%20on%20analyzing%20how%20different%20regions%20of%20the%20brain%20are%20engaged%20and%20if%20they%20are%20working%20together%20at%20the%20SPIE%20Conference%20on%20Defense%20and%20Commercial%20Sensing." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">r</a><a href="https://www.spiedigitallibrary.org/conference-proceedings-of-spie/12122/1212215/Flexible-energy-landscape-analysis-of-functional-connectivity-through-region-bundling/10.1117/12.2619126.short" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">esearch results</a> on analyzing how different regions of the brain are engaged and if they are working together at the SPIE conference on Defense and Commercial Sensing.</p>
    
    <p>In addition to her academic studies and research, Janerra is an active student leader. She is the president of the Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO), GSA Senator for the College of Engineering and Information Technology, and serves on the tenure track search committee for the CSEE Department.</p>

    <div>If you are an undergraduate student who is interested in Artificial Intelligence, we encourage you to apply to the <strong>2023 Undergraduate Consortium (AAAI-UC) at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Washington, DC</strong>.  <em>This conference is one of the top-tier conferences in AI and would offer access to cutting-edge research and researchers in AI from around the world. </em> </div>

    <div>We will prioritize undergraduates from marginalized communities in computing that are one or two years from graduation and are interested in doing artificial intelligence research yet have had little exposure to it.  Check out the <a href="https://aaai.org/Conferences/AAAI-23/undergraduate-consortium/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Call for Participation</strong></a>.  </div>

    <div>The Autonomous Resiliency / Machine Recovery (ARMR) system has been developed by APL since 2015, has recently identified a commercial licensee, and is just starting to roll out small pilot studies.  In this talk, I will discuss the technology, timeline, and lessons learned about the challenges of innovating while continuing to make critical contributions to other projects in the cybersecurity defense of the nation.</div>

    <div> <span>In this talk, I'll share my new book, </span><a href="https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262543460/design-as-democratic-inquiry/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Design as Democratic Inquiry</strong></a><span>. This book discusses a series of projects grounded in collaborations with communities and institutions. In these collaborations, I explore the potential and limitations of design to participate in democracy through what I call design experiments in civics. In particular, I explore how, as engaged designers, we might contribute to the work of communities and institutions that explore alternative civic imaginaries, which keep our democracies vibrant. This requires rethinking the stories we tell about design, how we practice design, and how we theorize design. Rather than repeating the heroic tales of innovation, I argue for embracing design as fragile, contingent, partial, and compromised: designing becomes a way to care for our collective futures together.</span>

    <div>The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series continues on November 2nd with a presentation by Linda Oliva.  Dr. Oliva will present her work with Dr. Alan Sherman and other colleagues in Computer Science investigating cybersecurity instruction over the past decade.  She will describe the wide variety of projects and outcomes resulting from the collaboration including the most recent grant focused on instructional practices at the US Naval Academy and West Point.  She will share the lessons she learned about what skills teacher educators can bring to interdisciplinary research and the benefits of extending into areas beyond your expertise.</div>

    <h4>CSEE faculty forming site to join the NSF BRAIN national center for neurotechnologies</h4>

    <div> Age-related diseases and neurological disorders, such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury, can have debilitating effects on cognitive-motor function, significantly decreasing the quality and length of life. There is a critical need for new technologies to better address the care and rehabilitation of these disorders. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>However, innovation in these neurotechnologies faces many challenges: slow evaluation rate compared to their rapid invention, insufficient standards for safety, efficacy, and long-term reliability, long time-to-market delays, and affordability. To address these problems, UMBC has partnered with the University of Houston and Arizona State University to propose a new site to join a multi-institution Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (<a href="https://iucrc.nsf.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">IUCRC</a>) for <strong>Building Reliable Advances and Innovation in Neurotechnology</strong> (<a href="https://nsfbrain.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BRAIN</a>).</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>With the support of an NSF IUCRC planning grant, CSEE Professor <strong><a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/ramana-vinjamuri/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ramana Vinjamuri</a> </strong>is working to establish the UMBC site to be part of the larger BRAIN effort. His vision is for an East Coast BRAIN research hub that will develop technologies that can help scientists better understand the nervous system and aid people with disabilities. In proposing UMBC as a future BRAIN site, he hopes to connect with industry, medical centers, and government agencies specifically <span>seeking to accelerate neurotechnology research. </span>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Neurotechnology is a broad discipline that includes everything from methods for measuring brain activity to tools for analyzing clinical data to human-centered computing, the focus of Vinjamuri's research. The proposed UMBC BRAIN site will have five research themes:</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>
    <strong>Cyber human systems</strong>, led by Ramana Vinjamuri, director of the <a href="http://vinjamurilab.cs.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Vinjamuri Lab</a>;</li>
    <li>
    <strong>Artificial intelligence and machine learning</strong>, led by Nilanjan Banerjee, head of the <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/~nilanb/research/lab/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Mobile, Pervasive, and Sensor Systems Lab</a>;</li>
    <li>
    <strong>Neural signal processing</strong>, co-led by distinguished university professor Tulay Adali, who leads the <a href="http://mlsp.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Machine Learning for Signal Processing Lab</a> and Seung-Jun Kim, who heads the <a href="https://redirect.cs.umbc.edu/~sjkim/lab.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Signal Processing and Smart Systems Lab</a>;</li>
    <li>
    <strong>Neural imaging and stimulation</strong>, led by Fow-Sen Choa, head of the <a href="https://blogs.cs.umbc.edu/choalab/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Choa Lab</a>; and </li>
    <li>
    <strong>Virtual/augmented/mixed reality</strong>, led by Don Engel, director of the <a href="https://avail.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Assistive Visualization and Artificial Intelligence Lab</a>.</li>
    </ul></div>
    <div><span>As an initial step in joining the <a href="https://nsfbrain.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BRAIN</a> research center, UMBC and Georgia Tech held an NSF IUCRC planning meeting in September for the proposed site addition. NSF program directors and evaluators attended the meeting, along with current BRAIN center directors and partners, prospective collaborators from industry and universities, and UMBC administrators, faculty, and students.</span></div>
