Steris will be out to do biosafety cabinet certifications tomorrow. While most are in the vivarium, not all are. Please make a note of this.

Thank you for your patience, the autoclaves were inspected and are now back in service.  

In order to accommodate the autoclave inspections next week, I will be turning off the autoclaves today at 4:00. Please let everyone in your lab groups know about this and encourage them to sign up for announcements in this user group.

The autoclaves will be turned off tomorrow afternoon starting around 4:00 to prepare them for the State inspection which will occur on Monday, 8/4. I will be escorting the inspector through the building and will be turning the units back on as soon as they have completed the inspection. 

This mandatory inspection is coordinated by the state for safety and insurance purposes and cannot by delayed. Please plan ahead to schedule your research reagents needs and or biological waste disposal  around the outage.

I was just informed that the autoclave inspections will take place next week. 

Autoclaves will be available immediately until Friday at 4:00. I apologize for the inconvenience. I scheduled time off myself with these inspections happening this week. 

I'm still waiting on the ETA for the autoclave inspector. I was expecting them this morning, but they are free to pick and choose there own schedule. With close to 3 dozen units on the campus, it looks likely that we will be delayed at least a day.

With the number of new students doing research in the ILSB and summer weather as it is in Baltimore, I want to re-emphasize appropriate lab wear in both biological / chemical labs and vivaria. 

The standard in the all labs are no open toed shoes or sandals, no shorts or short skirts and no bare arms. If you have a short sleeve shirt or sleeveless top, lab coats must be worn when in the lab or vivarium. Under no circumstances should bare legs or feet ever be in a lab or vivarium. 

Your clothing is a form of protective barrier and in some cases it may be the only barrier between you and serious injury. Please make everyone in the building aware of these requirements.

I received further clarification for the extent of the pressure vessel inspections later this month. We will not be losing the steam generators for the building, however we will need to turn off all autoclaves in the building on the evening of Friday, July 25th to allow them to cool over the weekend. The inspection is scheduled for Monday morning, July 28th. Once the inspections are over, the autoclaves can be restarted. Once restarted, it only takes a few minutes to re-pressurize and heat the units.

Please make sure you schedule any critical sterilizations prior to the 25th.
