Security software update March 28th

Unfortunately we were unable to get the new server issue resolved so we went back to the old server. I can now continue to use the old software and make any changes necessary . 

Any students who may need access to the building or labs should have their PI or instructor contact me for access.

I just wanted to give everyone a quick update  We have the majority of the new server and software up and running but are having an issue with importing new cards from the data exchange server.  We worked on it with the software vendor, Lenel and our server team all day yesterday and are unable to resolve the issue thus far  If we do not get an answer from Lenel  this morning we might be reverting back to the older server and continuing to use it a while longer until we can address the issue .

Until this is resolved no ID cards can be authorized for access nor building hours be changed.

I will let you know of any updates I am alerted to.

Good morning all,

We are finally proceeding with the Lenel upgrade this week . Please make sure all changes and requests for student access to the labs are sent to me by Wednesday evening. 

We will be copying the security database over to the new server 1st thing Thursday morning. I will also need to update the new software on each of my office and home machines.The last update took me over a week to properly install. 

 
All door schedules and activity will continue to work as normal but there will be no updates until after the finish the upgrade

Leica received the PM on our CM3050S SN#8267 Cryostat located in the hallway by room 424. Ty Braxton can be on-site Friday 3/28 arriving between noon to 1pm. 

The instrument will need to be turned off the evening before the PM, with the glass cover left open, and the chamber wiped out with 100% alcohol. Please let me know if this works for your labs.

On Friday, March 14, 2025, beginning at 6:00 AM, the UMBC Electric Shop will be performing necessary electrical testing to ensure the reliability of our systems. This work will result in two brief power outages, each lasting approximately 30 to 60 seconds:

To minimize disruptions, we recommend that all computers not connected to a UPS be shut down prior to the outage. Please note that emergency circuits, fire alarm panels, and elevators will remain operational during this time.

With the influx of new PIs, postdocs and students I wanted to touch base on appropriating CO2 tanks for your research.

We have several distributors in the area that will service the campus. 

Roberts Oxygen and AirGas are close to the Campus and will drop off tanks at the warehouse, who then bring the tanks to the back of the building in the cage located outside of the loading dock.  PIs or their students need to then bring tanks up to the lab and bring the empties down, with the cylinder top attached. Empties are then taken back to the warehouse for pick up.  

ARC3Gases is located in Frederick, but does several deliveries on campus each week. ARC3 will deliver to the point of use inside the building (either distribution closet or to your tissue culture lab) but will need an account generated with your purchasing agent in your department: Biological Sciences, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering for the delivery and billing to be correctly set up.  

One other difference between the two distributors is how demurrage is charged. With Roberts and Airgas, each tank accrues a monthly demurrage charge. ARC3 will assign a yearly tank rental, assuming the number of tanks you have for your research will remain fairly static throughout the year.  

Personally, I'm a fan of ARC3 as delivery and billing are both streamlined and tanks are not grabbed from a lab without their knowledge.
