New Lab Safety and Auditing Platform

Hi all,

You should have recently or will soon be receiving an email to set up your new account on "Scishield".

This is a quite thorough and intuitive lab safety platform currently used by College Park, Shady Grove and the Med School downtown. As part of our commitment to continually improve our culture of safety, UMBC Environmental Safety and Health has selected SciShield to support this effort. SciShield is an enterprise software solution that helps organizations maintain a healthy and safe environment for their research communities. SciShield is used at top-20 Academic and Pharmaceutical organizations, provides premier customer support, and aims to save researchers' and ESH personnel time.

To be effective in maintaining safety across our organization, we need your help to collect some basic information about your laboratory.
Please log into SciShield by clicking the link below and entering your UMBC email and password. Upon login you will be prompted to complete a General Setup Wizard. Depending on the number of personnel in your lab group, you should expect this process to take about 10-15 minutes:
https://umbc.scishield.com/setup

You may also delegate this task to a trusted member of your laboratory by clicking the link below.
https://umbc.scishield.com/node/1911439/assign-delegate

Our goal is to provide our research community with easy access to safety information, reduce the administrative burden on faculty members and research staff, and enable ESH personnel to more efficiently manage safety.

Thank you for your time and assistance and for helping to protect our research programs.

Compressed gas safety

All,

We had several tanks of gas topple in the storage cage last evening. As I am continuing to work with environmental safety about proper storage and identification, it was apparent that numerous tanks of CO2 were returned to the storage cage with out their enclosure caps. Neither the warehouse or the distributors will take tanks back with out the top it came supplied with. Your laboratories will accrue demurrage charges until the lids are provided.

These caps weigh 5 to 8 pounds a piece, they are not trash. Not only are these important for your labs finances, moving tanks around the building without having the valves protected is a serious safety issue.

Please get the word out to your lab members and if they have not received this message, please ask them to follow this group for important announcements at: https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/ilsb-research
