Critical Language Scholarship
Applications due 11/19
Application deadline is November 19, 2019.
Eligible students are: degree-seeking (grad or undergrad), U.S. citizens, over 18.
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.
The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.
Each summer, CLS provides rigorous academic instruction in fifteen languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. CLS participants are citizen ambassadors, sharing American values and promoting American influence abroad.
Languages Offered
Anthony S. Cano is a URA Scholar and Media & Communication/ Political Science major, with a minor in Information Systems, who will graduate in Fall, 2020.
Title of your research project: Informal Resettlement of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Cartagena, Colombia: A Visual Exploration and Oral History.
Describe your project: My research project is about understanding the nature of IDPs, their resettlement process to urban areas, and their living conditions in their new settlements. I used two research methods during my field-work to withdraw evidence to analyze and answer my project questions.
Who is your mentor for your project?
Dr. Felipe Filomeno, Political Science.
How did you find your mentor?
I took Dr. Filomeno's POLI 361 - Comparative Political Analysis class and thought he was a good candidate due to his research background.
How did you become interested in this project?
I have done journalistic independent projects in the past about similar topics but after taking several political science classes, I wanted to conduct an interdisciplinary project using social science theories and my visual art skills. At the same time, I really wanted to know more about IDPs in general and the different types of migration.
What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?
The hardest part about my project has been transcribing the video-interviews because my subjects did not speak Spanish fluently. I did not expect to be planning every single activity or action throughout my research, however, this has also helped me to be more organized with my research deadlines.
What has been the most rewarding part?
The chance to travel to Colombia, South America to interview IDPs in Nelson Mandela, Cartagena, and experience a new culture.
How will you disseminate your research?
I intend to present my research at URCAD 2020, and hopefully publish a paper about my project findings.
What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Research something you’re passionate about, educate yourself on the topic, become an expert on the topic, find an issue on the topic, study the issue closely, formulate an idea and make a proposal.
What are your career goals?
After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in photojournalism to have the opportunity to continue to study and research more issues like this one around the world.

Teddy is currently in the UMBC Applied Mathematics PhD program, still working with Dr. Sousedik on research, some of which continuing the undergraduate work.
Abstract:
We develop a fast implementation of the mixed finite element method for the Darcy’s problem discretized by lowest-order Raviart-Thomas finite elements using Matlab. The implementation is based on the so-called vector- ized approach applied to the computation of the finite element matrices and assembly of the global finite element matrix. The code supports both 2D and 3D domains, and the finite elements can be triangular, rectangular, tetrahedral or hexahedral. The code can also be easily modified to import user-provided meshes. We comment on our freely available code and present a performance comparison with the standard approach.

The kick-off will be held on Wednesday, October 2 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm in ILSB 118, and 6:30pm-8:30pm in the Skylight Room. Writing Center Tutor Invited to Naylor Research Workshop
Ajay Kharkar to Develop ESL Tutoring Research
Congratulations to Ajay Kharkar, Academic Success Center's Writing Center Tutor!
Ajay will attend the Naylor Workshop for Undergraduate Research in Writing Studies this weekend at York College of Pennsylvania.
During the conference, Ajay will work one-on-one with writing researchers to develop his research project.
Ajay writes:
I was brought to the study of writing when I entered a communications arts program in the 9th grade, after being in a STEM program for the three years prior. Once I began studying the humanities I realized just how important writing and communication are to all studies, especially in the STEM fields. While I have continued to study a STEM track (biochemistry), I have tried to put as much of an emphasis on writing as I could. I have taken the writing center internship course at our school and tutor in our writing center. In addition, I tutor literacy for first graders in Baltimore City, because I believe that early literacy is paramount to success in school and any subsequent career.
This kind of research specifically matters to me because, as I mentioned before, I have grown up with ESL learners and have worked with many ESL learners in the writing center. They face challenges that their peers do not have to deal with studying in another language, and they should receive help specific to these challenges. Unfortunately, tutoring ESL students is an area only briefly covered in the overall teaching of writing tutoring, and I feel that there is a great need for additional strategies specific for ESL tutoring. By investigating into a different sort of strategies, those of interpersonal relations and creating a comfortable environment as opposed to the writing-specific strategies almost ubiquitously described in ESL tutoring studies, I feel this goal can be most effectively met.

URA Scholar Gerson Kroiz Publishes Paper!

"Challenges and Opportunities for the Simulations of Calcium Waves on Modern Multi-Core and Many-Core Parallel Computing Platforms."

Abstract
State‐of‐the‐art distributed‐memory computer clusters contain multicore CPUs with 16 and more cores. The second generation of the Intel Xeon Phi many‐core processor has more than 60 cores with 16 GB of high‐performance on‐chip memory. We contrast the performance of the second‐generation Intel Xeon Phi, code‐named Knights Landing (KNL), with 68 computational cores to the latest multicore CPU Intel Skylake with 18 cores. A special‐purpose code solving a system of nonlinear reaction‐diffusion partial differential equations with several thousands of point sources modeled mathematically by Dirac delta distributions serves as realistic test bed. The system is discretized in space by the finite volume method and advanced by fully implicit time‐stepping, with a matrix‐free implementation that allows the complex model to have an extremely small memory footprint. The sample application is a seven variable model of calcium‐induced calcium release (CICR) that models the interplay between electrical excitation, calcium signaling, and mechanical contraction in a heart cell. The results demonstrate that excellent parallel scalability is possible on both hardware platforms, but that modern multicore CPUs outperform the specialized many‐core Intel Xeon Phi KNL architecture for a large class of problems such as systems of parabolic partial differential equations.

Experimentalist: The Art of Robert W. Fichter
Online exhibit available now!
This online exhibit accompanies an exhibition presented at UMBC’s Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery from August 28–December 18, 2019. The exhibition represents the first retrospective of the artist’s career in over thirty years.
Created between 1962 and 2006, the works reproduced online are drawn entirely from the Robert W. Fichter Archive at UMBC. The selection highlights the artist’s experimental approach to examining the human condition. Employing shifting moods and mediums as well as wit, humor, and satire, Fichter delivers trenchant critiques of war, nuclear proliferation, and environmental disaster. Firmly rooting his expressive compositions in a strong sense of place—the surreal landscapes of his native Florida—he presents a singular vision of humanity on the brink.
The exhibition Experimentalist: The Art of Robert Fichter was curated by Tom Beck, Curator Emeritus. The presentation at the Library Gallery was organized by Beth Saunders, Curator and Head of Special Collections.
