URCAD Sneak Peek: Alex Schobitz
Emotional: An Animated Self-portrait
Alex is a Visual Arts major, with a concentration in film animation. They will be exhibiting their work: "Emotional," at Virtual URCAD 2020!
Abstract:
"Emotional" is an animated self portrait depicting the struggle one faces when dealing with bipolar one disorder. The boy, a representation of the animator, has a series of rapid mood swings that plunge him into an uncontrollable surge of emotion. He must figure out a way to regain control of his feelings and get help. The piece was created through several different animation techniques. The greyscale paper dolls that functioned as the body for the protagonist were made by hand and given life through stop motion animation and use of a greenscreen. Layered on top of this, was digital animation for the rushing emotions, as well as digital rotoscoping for the boy’s expressions. The stop motion animation was done under a DSLR camera and then processed through Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro. The sound design for this piece was created in Ableton Live and Adobe Audition, and recrafted with permissions from FreeSound.org, and UMBC’s Sound Vault. This animation is intended to give viewers a glimpse into the tidal waves of emotions that so deeply affect not only the animator but anyone who struggles with bipolar one disorder.

URCAD Sneak Peek: Joanna Bigelow
Portraits: An Exploration of the Human Spirit
Joanna is a Visual Arts major, and an intern in the art department at Catonsville High School. She will be exhibiting her work: "Portraits: An Exploration of the Human Spirit" at Virtual URCAD 2020!
Artist's Statement:
My goal in creating a piece of art is to convey the truth that lies in beauty. My focus in my work is creating solid forms and expressing rhythm in the face and the body. My style is a mix of realism and impressionism. I work primarily with charcoal and oil paint, but I am also adept at working in digital media and 3-D design. My medium and approach are often seen as traditional, but I desire to show the sacredness of nature and humanity. I am always in a state of learning. My approach is to constantly re-invent and conceptualize the way I see things. My work, as a result, has a life of its own and a sense of balance.

URCAD Moving Online, April 22-29th!
A virtual tour of undergraduate research and creative work
UMBC's 24th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day
(URCAD) was originally scheduled to be held on campus
on April 22, 2020. Due to the campus closure, URCAD will be moving online, April 22-29th.
Converting URCAD from an on-campus, day-long symposium to an online event will be supported by a technology called VoiceThread (VT), an asynchronous (“not in real time”) platform for media-rich conversations that can occur anytime, anywhere. This means attendees will still be able to see students' research posters and slides, as well as art, performances, films, and video games, and be able to leave video, voice, or text feedback for the presenters. This way, participants create a sense of personal “presence” in the online environment, and students will be able to respond to questions and receive feedback during the week-long event.
We hope to preserve the spirit of URCAD and make this a meaningful, learning, sharing, and celebratory event for our campus community.

Danilo Symonette & Jeremy Rubin Selected for NSF Fellowship
URA Scholars win funding for graduate school
Congratulations to URA Scholars Danilo Symonette, and Jeremy Rubin, who have been selected for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. The GRF provides financial support for three years within a five-year fellowship period, comprising a $34,000 stipend per twelve-month fellowship year.
Danilo is a McNair Scholar and LSAMP participant. His research, "Towards the Automatic Assessment of Student Teamwork" explores how universities are increasingly using discussion platforms such as GroupMe and Slack to work virtually. However, little has been done so far to understand how to use the data these platforms generate to analyze student teamwork behaviors, and so to support or improve those behaviors. By building a model to automatically predict a student’s performance as a team member based on their exchanges with teammates is itself a significant contribution. Danilo has published several papers with his research mentor, Dr. Don Engel, in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department. He will present his project at URCAD 2020 (online), April 22-29th. In addition to the NSF GRFP which will financially support Danilo's graduate studies, Danilo has been admitted to the Computer Science Ph.D. programs at MIT and Stanford, and has also been offered a position at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.
Jeremy received offers of admission from the University of Pennsylvania (Biostatistics, PhD), Columbia University (Biostatistics, PhD), Johns Hopkins University (Biostatistics, PhD), North Carolina State University (Statistics, PhD), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Biostatistics, PhD) and has accepted the offer of admission for the University of Pennsylvania. His research, "The Linear Maximal Sequence Kernel Association Test for Neuroimaging Studies" is directed by his mentor, Dr. Russell Shinohara, Associate Professor of Biostatistics, University of Pennsylvania, Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics. This work was continued as a part of the UMBC MARC U*STAR Program, and will culminate in a senior thesis with UMBC's Department of Mathematics and Statistics this Spring. Jeremy is a Meyerhoff Scholar and member of the Honors College, and was a 2018-19 URA Scholar and URCAD presenter (Mentor: Dr. Erin Green). Ultimately, Jeremy aspires to pursue a career in academia as a research professor at a leading medical institution to further research in high-dimensional data analysis for biomedical imaging and allow for more accurate diagnosis and prevention of medical conditions.

3 UMBC Students Receive Prestigious Goldwater Scholarship
Troutman, Brooks, and Fagboyegun bring home the prize!
Not one, but three UMBC students have been named Barry Goldwater Scholars for the 2020 – 2021 academic year, earning one of the most prestigious scholarships available to U.S. undergraduates pursuing research in STEM fields. This is the second time that three UMBC students have received Goldwater Scholarships in the same year.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program seeks to provide the United States with “a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.” UMBC’s Goldwater Scholars include Jordan Troutman ‘21, M29, computer science and mathematics; Dominique Brooks ‘21, M29, biological sciences; and Olumide Fagboyegun ‘21, M29, biochemistry. They will receive substantial scholarship funding that advances their undergraduate work and supports their undergraduate educational paths.
“We are so proud of UMBC’s Goldwater Scholars. Each student will make significant contributions to their respective fields, as future Ph.D.s,” says April Householder, director of undergraduate research and prestigious scholarships at UMBC. “Their research—in neuroscience, genetics, and machine learning bias—is timely and important. We can’t wait to see where they will take it with the help of this scholarship.”
Brooks, Fagboyegun, and Troutman are among the 396 winners selected this year. More than 1,300 students applied from 461 institutions across the country.

Why did you get involved with the Academic Success Center?
I’m really into education and I wanted to explore how it is
to actually teach people—it was an opportunity that I couldn’t let pass by.

Why do you love your job?
I’m a very shy person, so having this job allows me to come
in contact with a lot of people who I usually would not meet. It allows me to
come out of my shell. My tutees help me learn as much as I help them learn.
Ideal pizza and why?
Supreme pizza with no olives because olives are disgusting
and I like every other topping on there. Really, all I need is a mushroom
pizza, but if it doesn’t have mushrooms, I’ll eat it, but do I want it?

URCAD 2020 will be held online, April 22-29
The show will go on for undergraduate researchers & artists!
Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) was originally scheduled to be held on campus for April 22, 2020. Due to the campus closure, URCAD will be moving online.
You will still be able to see students' research posters and slides, as well as art, performances, films, and video games. Welcome to the all online environment! The Library has many ways to provide research assistance and other help during the emergency and there are some things you should know:
THE BAD NEWS
The library building is closed, no one allowed in or out, including the atrium and RLC. This means no books, reserves, media, laptops, or DML equipment is available for check-out, and USMAI borrowing and Interlibrary Loan are not operating.
THE GOOD NEWS

We request that you hold on to all Library materials for the time being. Fines and fees for currently checked-out material are suspended for the duration.
