Winter Welcome Week 2020 will run from January 26 - February 5, 2020!

This banner event is the time to start off the new year with social and academic events, resource fairs, and a time to meet and reconnect with friends.

Over 250 Undergraduate Presenters in All Disciplines Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film.

Over 250 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects.  They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated with other programs.

Students who have received Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) for the previous year will be presenting their findings. The UMBC Review, UMBC’s annual peer-reviewed research journal, which features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates, makes its debut at this event- stop by and get your copy! Come hear the alumni keynote speaker talk about their experiences after UMBC, and how being an undergraduate researcher benefited them.

UMBC is unique in providing this opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct and present their research in a professional and supportive setting.  Students get valuable feedback from their peers, faculty, and staff, and practice their public speaking and presentations skills.  This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, the incumbent performs moderately complex accounting clerical or bookkeeping tasks to support accounts payable/receivable and auditing function. Post journal entries, process payments, and verifies accuracy of data.

Specific duties include: inputting data, records and verifies details of financial transactions in ledgers and automated systems; review and process financial documents such as invoices and receipts; purchase of all supply request and receiving of Goods and Services for the Library; inputting and retrieving financial transactions into a shadow system (QuickBooks) for monthly reconciliation and other reports; retrieve and process order from the Accounting and Receiving RT system; back up to the Accounting Associate with picking up paychecks and writing receipts for departments with the Library; and perform other duties as assigned, including serving as back for other staff in the department.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED
• One year accounting clerical experience.
• Working knowledge of bookkeeping principles, mathematical methods and techniques.
• Skilled in performing basic mathematical computations and the use of calculator.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to operate keyboards, personal computers and financial software
• Ability to prepare written records and reports
• Ability to input data accurately

Responsibilities:

Working in the Library Technical Services Bibliographic and Metadata Services Unit, perform database maintenance for Library collections in several databases for materials including but not limited to serials, monographs, and nonprint materials.

Specific duties include: weeding and transferring materials; creation/editing of holdings statements; working with system reports which entails problem solving, reviewing of regular reports, responding to requests for assistance, and coordinating work with other departments; performing copy cataloging in several databases including  Aleph, ContentDM, and OCLC for a variety of materials; creating non-MARC metadata descriptions of a variety of materials and; performing other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and one year of library experience directly related to the primary duties of the position.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience working in Technical Services performing database maintenance work
• Experience with library systems such as ContentDM and OCLC
• Experience working with Ex Libris products preferably Aleph

As part of the Library Information Technology Services (LITS) division, the I.T. Librarian oversees the daily operations of IT support and AV services for staff computing as well as AV deployment in the Library & Gallery. Works closely with DolT in management of the Library's public computing and AV resources. This position works collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive environment with librarians and staff, both inside and outside of the Library & Gallery, to implement effective and equitable technological solutions including assistive technologies and to identify current and emerging technologies to meet the evolving needs and expectations for an academic library environment. Assesses and documents condition and use of technologies in the building; makes recommendations on existing and emerging technology and resources based on gaps in meeting user needs and emerging trends. The IT Librarian is responsible administering and maintaining library applications including, but not limited to, ILLiad, CONTENTdm, Connexion, Ares, Aleph, and EBSCO Discovery Services (EDS). In addition, the IT Librarian supports efficient use of technology for employees in the Library & Gallery including through management and training for various systems, development of best practices for document management and use of cloud systems, and development of procedures and training for other topics as needed. The position also assists with the coordination and continued development of local digitization projects and with defining and implementing the Library & Gallery's digital preservation strategy. This position also manages and maintains servers for storage and backups. Other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Requires a Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or information science program
• Knowledge of computer workstations, networking, and computer security.
• Knowledge of web client and server applications, databases, and Web programming environments.
• Knowledge or experience working with integrated library systems and the application of technology to enhance effectiveness in library operations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of technology trends, standards, information technology best practices, and issues in academic libraries.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of information technology principles, processes, systems and standards, including operating systems, systems security, wireless networking, and digital initiatives and emerging web technologies.
• Demonstrated experience in progressively responsible supervisory positions, managing multiple priorities.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
