Archives Gold #29: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th

<Tagline>A Maryland Senate Bill Authorizing the Establishment of UMBC</Tagline>

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a Maryland Senate Bill detailing the authorization of four new branches of the University of Maryland system.

Maryland Senate Bill 73, "An Act to Authorize and Empower The University to Establish Branches, One in Baltimore County, One in the Central Eastern Shore Area, One in the Central Western Maryland Area, and One in the Southern Maryland Area," April 30, 1963. Coll107, UMBC Historical Documents, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

In 1963, the state of Maryland passed legislation authorizing the building of four new University of Maryland branches: one in Baltimore County, one in the Central Eastern Shore area, one in the Central Western Maryland area, and one in the Southern Maryland area. The branch in Baltimore County, which would later become known as the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was the only university to be founded as a result of this legislation. The state of Maryland intended for the new university in Baltimore County to prevent further overcrowding at the College Park campus and to "serve as a nucleus for scientific research and development."
