Molecular and Biochemical Analysis of Proteins

This program provides advanced training in the manipulation and analysis of proteins for undergraduate students. It facilitates deep understanding of experimental laboratory research, insights into protein biochemistry and contemplation of the broader context of research. A wide range of student projects mentored by faculty in the Department of Biochemistry is available. 


Eligibility

- Undergraduate who has completed at least 4 semesters of college study

- Students must have at least one semester of college remaining after the summer of 2016

- U.S. citizen or permanent resident

- Grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale


Program Details


- Ten-week mentored research experience (May 23 - July 29, 2016)

- Career development sessions each week

- $5250 stipend and additional $750 meal allowance

This program seeks to foster the careers of the next generation of microbiologists. The focus of the program is a hands-on research project conducted under the guidance of faculty and graduate student mentors. A range of research projects will be available, including basic mechanisms of bacterial and viral gene expression, virus structure and assembly, biofilm formation, microbial development, and prokaryotic cell biology. There will also be several educational and career developmental activities.


Eligibility

The program is intended for undergraduates who:
  • Will be returning for at least one semester of undergraduate study before graduation
  • Are interested in pursuing graduate school and a career in biological research
  • Are U.S. citizens or permanent residents (hold a green card)
  • Have limited access to research opportunities at their home institution
  • Prior research experience is NOT a requirement
Disabled students, minority students, and disadvantaged students (economically or first in family to attend college) are especially encouraged to apply.

Students will pair with faculty members and study how an organism's phenotype is influenced by the interplay of its genotype and environment. There will also be academic/professional development activities in addition to planned social events and field trips to the Blue Ridge Mtns. and the South Carolina Coast.


Who should apply?
  • Students who want to participate in first rate biological research
  • Students who are interested in the possibility of earning a Ph.D. in biology or related area
  • Students who have completed at least one biology or chemistry course
  • Students who are currently enrolled in a two-year or four-year college or university and who will not complete their bachelor's degree before May 2017
  • United States Citizens or Permanent Residents
  • Priority will be given to students early in their undergraduate careers and from schools with limited research opportunities
  • Members of demographic groups that are underrepresented in sciences are particularly encouraged to apply


Program Details 
  • 10 week program from May 22 - July 29, 2016
  • $5250 stipend
  • Room and board and access to student fitness facilities
  • Travel costs up to $500 per student 
  • Application deadline: Monday, February 8, 2016

This week we present the third volume of UMBC's radical newspaper The Red Brick.

The Red Brick was UMBC's short lived radical newspaper during the late 1960s and the early 1970s.  The newspaper was student run and each edition contained various articles, poems, comics, and illustrations representative of the time. The second issue, for instance, mentioned the upcoming performance of Chicago Transit Authority (popularly known as Chicago) on October 19, 1969, as can be seen here.  

The Red Brick was considered "radical" during its publication due to what the community described as "un-American and obscene writings."  Many social organizations tried to protest the newspaper and stop its production but Chancellor Dr. Kuhn defended the students' rights to free speech. Despite his support, the publication eventually fell apart (after only three issues) due to continued controversy and financial mismanagement.

For the summer of 2016, students from the U.S. will be selected to conduct research in Germany, Italy, Singapore, or the United Kingdom.


Eligibility

1) U.S. citizen or permanent resident
2) Enrolled full-time in a chemistry, materials science, biochemistry, or chemical engineering program at an accredited U.S. university or college
3) Have one semester or summer of prior experience working in a research laboratory outside of normal classwork
4) Be a rising junior or senior by the end of the program with at least one semester of enrollment remaining after the summer
5) Competitive applicants will have a GPA about a 3.5
6) Please note that membership in ACS is not a judgment criteria and all students, regardless of membership status, are welcome to apply


Program Details

  • 10-12 weeks
  • Allowances for housing and meals 
  • Round-trip international airfare and local transport from the airport to your host university or institute
  • A required pre-departure orientation in May/June in Washington, D.C.
  • A trip to the spring 2017 ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, CA to present the results of your research
  • A language training allowance
  • International medical insurance coverage
