American Archives Month exhibit

<Tagline>October 1-30 in the Library Rotunda</Tagline>

This is the sixth year of celebrating American Archives Month at UMBC! This year we're looking deep into our institution’s shared history with the
physical space that we occupy today. On display in the Library Rotunda
are photographs, artifacts, and clippings from the Stabler family papers
     (Collection 27),
which were donated by the descendants of Edmund Stabler, a long-serving
superintendent of the Baltimore Manual Labor School. An online exhibit
about the School will also be available this month. Both of the exhibits
were curated by recent UMBC graduate Nichole Zang, with assistance from
Special Collections graduate student assistant Tucker Foltz and
Archivist Lindsey Loeper. Nichole’s History M.A. thesis informed the work on display; a copy of her thesis, “Holy Temples to Dark Rooms:
The Origins of Baltimore’s Juvenile Reform Movement of the Nineteenth
Century,” is also available in Special Collections.

American Archives Month is a collaborative effort by professional
organizations and repositories around the nation to highlight the
importance of records of enduring value. Archivists are professionals
who assess, collect, organize, preserve, maintain control of, and
provide access to information that has lasting value, and they help
people find and understand the information they need in those records. -

Archives Gold #1: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th

<Tagline>A Brick from Gym I</Tagline>

This week marks the start of Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series from the Library showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. Every Thursday we will present a new object from the University Archives - be it a photograph, pin, yearbook, playbill, etc.- leading up to the 50th Anniversary of UMBC's opening in September of next year. To kick off the series, the first object we present is a brick from the Gym I building.

Brick from Gym I, 1999, Institutional Advancement Records, University Archives, Collection 97, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

Gym I was among the earliest buildings constructed on the UMBC campus, along with Lecture Hall and Academic One, which all debuted when the university first opened in 1966. The building had athletic areas, like a basketball court, but it mainly functioned as a student center with a commuter cafeteria and spaces that were often reserved for student dances and performances. Gym I remained as UMBC's student center until 1999, when the building was torn down and a new student center, The Commons, was constructed in its place. The plaque on the brick says, "Brick from the past, building for the future. UMBC Gym I, 1966-1999."

Black History in Baltimore and Beyond - on display now

<Tagline>Exhibit in Special Collections</Tagline>

On exhibition in the Library Special Collections is Black History in Baltimore and Beyond, open from September 28th until November 13th.

This show, curated by Special Collections student assistant Audrey Gatewood, is made up of books, photographs, and magazines from Special Collections' holdings. Split into three parts, it provides a glance into just a few of the building blocks that make up African American history. First, there are representations of the background of Baltimore, its Black community history, the evolution of its neighborhoods and schools. Next, there are items that indicate the hardships African Americans have faced, Jim Crow laws, blockbusting, and police brutality. Finally there is material related to the Civil Rights Movement, ever-evolving struggles for fairness, people power, and activism.

African American history is a wealth of complexities. This exhibit provides insight into what are just pieces of a massive narrative of the Black experience in America through literature, alternative press publications, and photographs by Roland Freeman.

Special Collections is open Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m, with extended hours until 8pm on Thursdays, and is located on the first floor of the Library through the Gallery.
