Researcher of the Week: Akua Nimarko

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Akua,
She is a Biological Sciences & Psychology and a URA Scholar. Akua is a tutor for the Learning Resources Center and a Cell Biology teaching assistant. She is also an officer for the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) and UMBC Food Recovery Network. In the future, she plans to pursue her PhD in Neuroscience.

How did you find your mentor for your research project?

Towards the end of my freshman year, I e-mailed professors whose research I found interesting. I met with Dr. Lin to discuss her research and possible projects and to my delight, she allowed me to join her lab.

Is this your first independent research project?

Dr. Lin’s lab was my first research experience. However, since joining her lab, I have done summer internships at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania.

How much time do you put into it?

I work about 10-15 hours a week.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

Dr. Lin mentioned the URA program to me and suggested that I apply.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor was very helpful during the application process. She helped me edit the abstract and the URA application.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The most challenging part about research is when experiments fail or I receive unexpected results. However, it is very rewarding when I am able to get the experiments to work or the unexpected results lead to significant findings.

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am a tutor for the Learning Resources Center and a Cell Biology teaching assistant. I am also an officer for the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) and UMBC Food Recovery Network.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

I advise that students look for labs early in their academic career. By getting involved in research early, students will have plenty of time to fully understand the research process, gain substantial research experience and possibly even complete an independent project. I also advise that students meet with different faculty members in order to explore different research interests.

Read her abstract here...

Tips for Letters of Recommendation!

Hi Retrievers! We’re in the final stretch of the semester! Just stopping by the myUMBC sphere to make sure you’re aware of all of the resources available to you on campus.

If you didn't already know, it’s not too late to sign up for
Appointment Tutoring, or visit our Math Lab or Writing Center! Check out our past posts for more information and to sign up. (You can even sign up for
Appointment Tutoring through our Facebook Page! Just click the “sign up”
    button!)

Registering for classes? Make sure you complete any
necessary Placement Testing before your registration date!

Tis the season for Letters of Recommendation! Whether you need them for grad school or scholarships, now is the time to get them. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind:

Ask the right people- Make sure you ask
professors who know who you are and that you've worked with before. If you know
that you didn't go to class for the majority of the semester, it’s safe to say
you shouldn't ask that professor for a letter of recommendation.

Ask EARLY—It should go without saying that
professors are busy people. They grade papers, they teach lectures, attend meetings,
do research, etc. As shocking as it may seem, they cannot just drop everything
to write you a letter of rec. Ask well before the deadline if you want them to
help you. We suggest at least a month’s notice.

Give as much info as possible (especially the
deadline)—It’s really hard to write a letter of rec when the professor doesn't know why the student wants it. Are you applying for med school? Are you trying
to get an internship? These things matter. Make sure you let your professor know
what program you’re applying for, some info about the program, the deadline,
and why you think you’re a good fit. It’s helpful to provide your professor
with your resume or a personal statement of your accomplishments.

Follow up!—If you haven’t heard anything at
least one week before the deadline, email your professor to check in!

Do you have any other helpful tips? Feel free to leave them
    in the comments!

Special Collections Staff Picks!

<Tagline>Overwhelmed or intimidated by S.C.? Here's a starting point</Tagline>

This series was conceived by Special Collections student assistant Audrey Gatewood. She also wrote this first post. Check out Audrey's picks!

There are so many great resources in our collections, we understand it can be overwhelming. We, the staff, want to give you, the intrigued student, a place to start. Here you will find recommendations for some of the materials that are housed in Special Collections, such as photo books, comics, alternative press, art books and more.

Our collections are more accessible then you may think. Located in the back of the Library Gallery, we are ready to help you find whatever you’re looking for. By sharing some of our favorite materials we hope that this blog can be the beginning of your exploration into the excellent resources we have here.

See you in the reading room!

Two of Audrey's picks from the Bafford Photography Book collection:

THE CENTURY OF THE BODY: 100 PHOTOWORKS OF 1900-2000

The Century of the Body: 100 Photoworks 1900-2000 is a thorough yet concise look at the history of representations of the human body in photography.

(Images: Left: Edward Weston, Page 110; Right: Don McCullin, Page 142)

Spanning one hundred years, this book is a wealth of information that's formatted in a user friendly way. Each photo has a respective paragraph describing its background, both related to the photo specifically and in a broader sense. Many subjects are tied into this book, including science, fine art, technology, media and sociology. This book is especially useful for anyone who wants to learn about the history of photography in relation to other things, but with a core focus on the representation of the body.

BOYSTOWN: LA ZONA DE TOLERANCIA

Warning: Graphic Content

In the 1970's along the border between Texas and Mexico was Boystown, a collection of brothels and clubs. It was a public secret shielded by the dark of night. Men of every sort -- gang members, tourists, doctors, cowboys -- would come to engage with the sex workers. Working in the shadows of Boystown were several anonymous photographers, about seven, who sought out quick money by providing souvenir photos. They would approach the drunken men, photograph them with the woman they were pursuing, and pocket two dollars in exchange for a print. Though their intent was shallow, these photographers incidentally created a truly intense body of work.

The photos presented in this book are merciless, captured without pretense. In an unforgiving act of voyeurism, the facade of Boystown, built up by darkness, alcohol and flashy makeup, is accidentally destroyed within these mementos, which were most likely torn up and tossed the next day by the men who bought them.

Thanks for your picks, Audrey!

Stay tuned for more staff packs from Special Collections!
