Title: Watch Me Work: Baltimore Barbershops, Hair Salons, Stories & More

Mentor: Dr. Nicole King, American Studies

Abstract:
Picture this: a corner shop. You walk in and hear the buzz of clippers from a barber or a salon, the smell of burning flat iron, then some faint neo-soul music and real talk amongst the stylists and clients. What is this place? Why does it matter? Why is it here? What better way to know than to hear from the ones who run it? The right to the city can be defined in numerous ways, but this research dives into its culturally independent side. Black-owned businesses aren't just for profit; they aim to create safe spaces and independence. The Watch Me Work project methodology is an interactive interview set up to hear the stories of Black Baltimore Salons and Barbershops from the owners. An article by the Huffington Post notes that "black salons are a social hub" and are "safe spaces" for people to be unapologetically black. This project focuses on how and why this space was created from the mouths of the creators. Video interviews with the owners are the most authentic way to capture the stories of these environments. In conclusion, the objective of this project is to explore the pursuit of Black Business in Baltimore.

B.A. INDS: Educational Psychology and Entrepreneurship

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
I have a passion for helping students with learning differences reach their full potential. My goal is to open a school for students with learning differences. When looking for majors  I was looking for a college degree that would not only teach me how to be a great teacher but also give me the know-how to run my own school. That's when I found Individualized Study (INDS). It's perfect for me. It allowed me to tailor make the perfect degree for me. I'm excited to turn my dream into a reality with the help of this program.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?
I plan on receiving my masters in educational therapy and then after working as an educational therapist opening a school for students with learning differences. My INDS degree provided me with the necessary foundation for my future plans. 

Extracurricular
I revived the Zainab Damji Memorial Scholarship. I also teach 4th and 5th grade at Torah Academy of Minneapolis.

UMBC’s Christopher Slaughter, engineering student with health equity focus, wins prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Christopher Slaughter ’23, M31 computer engineering, has won a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue graduate work at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom next fall. Slaughter is the fifth student from UMBC to be recognized with the prestigious award, established by the University of Cambridge in 2000 with a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

April 12, 2023

After three years as an online event, URCAD will return to in-person this Spring. Join us on April 12, 2023, in the University Center and other venues around campus to see hundreds of research posters, oral presentations, dance performances, films, interactive games, and much more, all presented by UMBC’s undergraduate students. This annual event brings together researchers and artists from all disciplines and showcases the projects that UMBC students have been working on over the last year. Faculty, staff, mentors, students, and families are invited! Come, be part of the amazing undergraduate research community and be inspired!

Interested in presenting?  Apply by Feb. 13th at UR.umbc.edu. 

Mentor approval and 200-word abstract are required.
