Why did you choose to major in INDS?

I was interested in an INDS major from even before I started my first semester: an interdisciplinary degree focused on a field of study not wholly represented by existing majors seemed ideal for the kind of idiosyncratic interests I have. (From the start, I wanted to do fan studies or anime studies as my degree, as I had been interested in understanding fandom for a while and had recently delved more into the scholarship around it.) My interest in INDS grew as I learned about the importance of interdisciplinary scholarship. I realized that an interdisciplinary approach was necessary for the research I wanted to do, and a major in anthropology or MCS or Asian studies would not encompass my whole plan of study.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

I am applying to the Fulbright Program to do research in Japan, and I am also applying to doctoral programs in anthropology. I plan to complete a PhD in anthropology and hopefully enter academia.

My INDS degree will continue to serve me through not only the focus on multiple disciplines but also on the skills and strategies I learned for integrating different disciplinary knowledges, which is essential for venturing into interdisciplinary fields such as anime and manga studies, fan studies, etc. Additionally, the experience I gained in creating and revising a detailed research plan and in executing the research will be invaluable for my future as a scholar.

    Extracurricular

I have been involved in the leadership of the UMBC Anime Society for many years, first as its secretary, then three years as its president, and now finally as the coordinator for Retrievercon, the convention we run every spring. My proudest achievements as president were holding our best Retrievercon yet in 2020 before everything shut down, as well as collaborating with other organizations and departments to hold a series of events in 2019 paying tribute to Kyoto Animation, an animation studio that suffered a terrible arson attack that year.

I participated in the UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab, a research internship at UMBC, where I worked with a team of other students to produce a documentary on climate change in the Arctic that was made to be projected onto a spherical display.

I have made several presentations at URCAD based on my research, and I have also presented at three academic conferences. I published a paper in the peer-reviewed journal Mechademia in spring 2021.

My INDS capstone research is supported by a URA and an Honors College summer research grant.

Why did you choose to major in INDS?

As an artist, advocate for environmental justice, and lover of cities, INDS provided me the opportunity to combine my passions into an interdisciplinary major. I felt particularly connected to the INDS philosophy of claiming your education, which has led to the INDS staff challenging us to grow as not only students, but in our character as well. We get to create a schedule of classes that would not have been possible otherwise, and I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing the fascinating ways in which my coursework form an intricate web of information related to my major. On a personal level, the INDS journey has guided me down a path that unfolds from my individual experiences and strengths, while being part of an incredible community of those who are empowered to do the same.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

After graduation, I plan to find a job in urban design or urban sustainability in Baltimore or Washington D.C. before making plans to attend graduate school. I understand that work can be very unpredictable post-graduation, but I aspire to make my career a continuation of the studies that I am doing currently in INDS. I also plan to apply to be a Fulbright Scholar for 2024. I'm particularly interested in how my work as a designer can help facilitate community sustainability, such as with community land trusts and place-making. Alongside my career, I want to continue challenging myself to expand as an artist and traveling whenever I am afforded the chance to do.

Graduate student internship in Special Collections

<Tagline>Help promote 50 years of UMBC Special Collections!</Tagline>

The Special Collections department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is now accepting applications for a Spring 2023 internship focused on promotion and outreach for our 50th anniversary. The graduate student intern will work with the Curator and the Reference and Instruction Archivist on the coordination of targeted promotional blog posts and social media content. Specific projects will include outreach to blog contributors, updating project files, tracking scheduled posts across platforms, posting prepared content to the department's Instagram account, and developing promotional content on other platforms as needed. The intern will also have an opportunity to write original content. The student's specific educational goals will be factored into the final project plan for the internship.

During the internship, the student will gain experience working with archival, visual, and text collections in a Special Collections environment. They will gain project management experience and will play a key role in establishing the promotional schedule for the department.

Previous employment in a Special Collections department is not required but students should demonstrate experience using visual and archival collections and conducting original research. Strong communication skills are required, with a preference for students that have experience writing on different platforms and for multiple audiences. Students enrolled in a graduate program during the Spring 2023 semester are encouraged to apply by December 4, 2022; applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Please send your cover letter and resume to speccoll@umbc.edu.

This is an unpaid internship to be completed during the Spring 2023 semester. Remote work is optional. A campus parking permit will be provided to non-UMBC students.

Meet John Motavalli

<Tagline>INDS Fall 2022 Graduate Highlight Series</Tagline>

Why did you choose to major in INDS?

I chose this major in INDS because the nature of biomimicry is interdisciplinary. Emulating the uniquely powerful and multifunctional properties found in living things onto other materials requires an understanding of engineering, biology, and everything in between. The INDS program allowed me to create a degree that covered these fields, allowing me to approximate an undergraduate degree in biomimicry, which does not currently exist anywhere in the country.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

My plans after graduation are still being decided. There are several paths I am still choosing between. Aside from the goal of acquiring a biomimicry master's degree from ASU's biomimicry program (the most established in the country), my other options involve entering materials-related field and using what I have learned within my INDS degree to research and produce nature-based solutions. Regardless of which direction I decide to go in the end, I will be able to use what I have learned in the INDS program to further myself as a learner, a practitioner, and a person. I also already have some ideas for biomimetic products I would like to make, and this degree will help me create them.

    Extracurricular

I was a member of UMBC's Kinetic Sculpture team, featuring a drivable work of art (MC Hammerhead is the best, you can quote me on that), from Fall 2019 to the pre-covid part of Spring 2020. I was a contributor to the team's online URCAD presentation on the sculpture in 2020.
