Steven McAlpine, Individualized Study

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
During my college search, I found the field of Cognitive Science and decided that it was the best course of study to eventually help me achieve my goal of better understanding and supporting people on the autism spectrum. When I chose to come to UMBC, I was excited by the prospect of creating my own degree related to Cognitive Science, which I ultimately narrowed down to Psycholinguistics.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

I plan to enroll in a PhD program to study Cognitive Psychology or Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences in which I will build upon the foundation laid by my INDS degree by learning more specifically about how the mind produces and comprehends language and apply that to clinical research with autistic people.

EXTRACURRICULAR

I am a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar and have served on the Sondheim Steering Committee for three years. During my freshman year, I was a member of the Shriver Living Learning Community as well as UMBC's Agribusiness branch of Global Brigades. Through the Shriver Center, I have volunteered with Walking Discovery for all eight semesters and have served as the Student Volunteer Coordinator for the past six. I have been a member of Dr. Mirela Cengher's Applied Behavior Analysis lab for three semesters, and I will be presenting one of our current projects called "Categorizing Errors to Improve Learning Outcomes" at URCAD this spring. I was an Eco-Ambassador with the Office of Sustainability for two years, and I have been UMBC's delegate to the MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition for three semesters. Finally, I am a member of Catholic Retrievers.
Why did you choose to major in INDS?
I chose to major in INDS for a number of reasons. Firstly, I
have a passion for all things w eather relat ed, especially
natural disasters. The science behind natural disasters and
their ability to destroy cities within seconds , fascinates me.
Secondly, ever since I toured The R. Adams Cowley Shock
Trauma Cent er in the tenth gr ade, I have found a love for
trauma informed care and the fast pace nature of all things
emer gency r elated. Lastly, I have always been interested in
the inner workings of various social groups and how those
groups int eract, live, and work within society, mor e
specifically, low-income groups. When I came to UMBC, I
did not find my three passions within my first chosen
major and minor. However, when I t alked to Professor
Brown about the INDS department, I knew I could combine
my passions into one and bridge the gap between my
disciplines . Then, I became excited about pursing education
and w as finally able to claim my education at UMBC.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

My ultimate goal is to become a disaster specialist for FEMA; however, that career path requires years of preliminary job experience. In the mean time, I hope to work for either a non-profit that services minority groups, low-income communities, or veterans or work for a local or state government under their emergency management department. Wherever I end up working, I hope to combine my disciplines to bring an interdisciplinary perspective to the workplace. Furthermore, I want to expand my understanding and collaborate with the perspectives of my colleagues to broaden my knowledge. Eventually, I plan to get my PhD in Emergency Management.

EXTRACURRICULAR

I completed an internship at the non-profit organization, The Samaritan Women where I created a comprehensive, 50+ paged crisis response plan that is currently being implemented in sex trafficking shelters across the United States. I also am in the progress of an independent study with Dr. Halverson where we are creating a timeline of hurricanes that have hit low-income areas in the United States and exploring how the negative impacts could have been avoided and/or reduced.

Why did you choose to major in INDS?
I chose to major in INDS because it allowed me to combine my interests across disciplines into the unique study of amputees. Originally, my interest in becoming a prosthetist left a wide array of options for me when choosing my undergraduate degree. However, when I was introduced to the INDS program, it seemed like the perfect fit and allowed me to have a niche in my undergraduate study. After changing career paths from a prosthetist to an Occupational Therapist, INDS allowed flexibility in my coursework at UMBC. I got pick each individual course for a specific reason, whether it was a prerequisite for a graduate program, or just an interest that would further my knowledge in my area of interest.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?
I was recently accepted into my top choice Occupational Therapy doctorate program at Notre Dame of Maryland. I will be starting this program in August 2022. INDS has prepared me greatly for this, as I will graduate from UMBC with research experience that will prepare me for my future capstone in my graduate program.

EXTRACURRICULAR

I was a member of the ISC for the INDS program.
Why did you choose to major in INDS?
My interest in law enforcement began when the murder of my close relative went unsolved. This injustice motivated me to pursue a career in law enforcement, so that no one else would have to experience something like this. When I first came to UMBC, I began as an Information Systems major, but I realized that many of the courses were not as relevant for my career interests. I found more relevant courses in the disciplines of Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, and Management which helped me to understand multiple facets of the law enforcement field. I decided to switch to INDS to combine these disciplines and create an interdisciplinary approach to 21st Century policing.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?
I want to become a law enforcement officer with a police department in Maryland and work towards becoming a Specialized Weapons And Tactics (commonly known as SWAT) officer. My long term goal is to become a police instructor for active shooter training. In this role, I would train patrol officers in a new and more effective way to tackle today's active shooters in order to minimize casualties. My INDS degree and off-campus internship and research has introduced me to multiple facets of law enforcement, such as managing a team, interviewing, understanding criminal behavior, and training for active shooter drills that could be useful at different levels of my future law enforcement career.

    EXTRACURRICULAR

During my time at UMBC, I was a Supplemental Instructions Peer Assisted
Study Session (SI PASS) Leader and was involved in the UMBC Red Cross
Club (RCC) as a Secretary and Vice-President. While at UMBC, I completed
an off-campus internship with the Montgomery County Department of
Police in Gaithersburg, MD, where I served as a Police Cadet. I also
completed an off-campus research in San Marcos, TX, where I conducted
research about active shooter drills for law enforcement officers.
