*Special information related to Covid-19:
There are many changes happening to student research as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and campus closure. The URA selection committee has some advice to encourage you to apply for a URA and start to plan your research, even if there are some unknowns for the summer and fall semesters.
1. We have moved the application deadline back to May 15, 2020 in order to give students some extra time to prepare their research proposals.
2. Some research that was scheduled to start this summer may be delayed until the fall or spring semester- that's ok! The URA is good for the entire year, June 1-2020 to May 31, 2121. You can complete the research at any point during that time frame.
3. Our expectations for a final product are fluid and relaxed. If the research plan doesn't work out exactly as you proposed, that's ok- it's the nature of doing research.
4. Be creative in the ways you think about your project. You may have to focus instead on doing a thorough literature review, using a pre-formed data set to analyze, or looking at case studies, rather than collecting in-person data, or conducting research in a lab.
5. Methods such as lab benchwork, participant observations, focus groups, travel-related, in-person interviews, or other real-time collection methods may need some re-thinking. How can you collect data via online interviews, the internet, or other technological interventions?
6. Creative arts projects may incorporate some kind of online delivery method. We are hoping to be back on campus for URCAD 2021, but consider how VoiceThread might be used to display your creative work.
Remember:
URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they will remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.

I am affiliated with LSAMP, and was just recently accepted into the McNair Scholar’s Program! I attended URCAD because I really enjoy learning about the different research my peers have done. URCAD not only allows me to learn new things from my peers, but it also encourages me to become more connected to the STEM community at UMBC. While I did not present research this year, as a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar of UCSC, a member of the LSAMP community, a McNair Scholar, and a student researcher (currently under guidance of Dr. Chris Hawn), you should definitely look out for research from me in the future!

I had to convert my poster to a digital format for URCAD Online, so I posed with the "real thing." I joked to my friends that I couldn't have done it without the support of my furry friends! The awesome dog on the left is my dog, Stella. She's also the winner of the UMBC 2019 Puppy Parade where she won for her "Lab" Assistant science costume. Also pictured, her best friend Chip, the UMBC police dog.

"You've got the usual award, open to all majors and worth up to $1,500 and then you've got the Social Science award and the entrepreneurship award. Pretty amazing opportunity. And the deadline isn't until May 15th, so we've got plenty of time!"

Drop-off Locations for Residential Students Only
Safely return USM library materials
Residential students who have a scheduled move-out time, please bring your library materials to campus. Arrangements have been made for you to safely return USM library materials during your visit.
There are three curb-side locations for library materials* drop-off through Friday, May 22:
- Center Road at Erickson Hall
- Poplar Road at True Grits
- Front entrance to Apartment Community Center
*Books, DVDs, CDs & DML equipment. You are able to return books, CDs, and DVDs from all USM libraries.
Please return laptops to the UMBC Police station, which remains open.
You will not be charged a late fee, even if you have received an overdue or
replacement fee notice. Once the item is checked in, the fine will be
cancelled. This amnesty will be in effect for a few months.
This message applies only to students who have scheduled a move-out time
with Residential Life. General return of library material is not available
at this time, as we are still operating under the Governor's order to limit
non essential travel.

URCAD 2020 has Ended
Thank you to all those who helped make this event great!
On behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the students researchers, their mentors, and the guests who participated in URCAD Online this year.
A special thanks goes out to Michael Mower, UAA’s IT Web, and Graphic Design Specialist, and to our partners in the Division of Information Technology for helping to transition URCAD online using the VoiceThread platform. Thank you also to our Alumni Keynote Speaker, Dr. Keisha John, for her inspiring words of wisdom in these challenging times. I would also like to acknowledge the URCAD Selection Committee and its chair, Dr. Stephen Miller, for all their work in making selections and giving students feedback on their abstracts, and Dr. Raimi Quiton and Dr. Timothy Phin for helping prepare the students to present. And thank you to Provost Philip Rous and Dean Katharine Cole for their continued support of the event.
You will still be able to view the presentations until September 4, 2020, although some students may choose to turn off their comment function. To view student projects, see the URCAD presenter listing and click on any VT icon. Projects are also viewable by department.
