UMBC Mock Trial Starts 2017 With Success The A Team Finishes Fourth and the B Team Earns a Trio This weekend both the A and B Team competed at Johns Hopkins' Blue Jay Invitational. The A Team finished fourth in the tournament overall, earning honorable mention awards, with a record of 5-2-1. Additionally, Summer Akhtar earned her first ever attorney award and Kayla Smith earned a witness award. The B Team earned 3 wins against stiff competition. The teams will now turn their attention to next weekend, as the A Team heads to Georgetown and the B Team heads to the Charm City Classic Invitational.

Every fall, UMBC takes part in "invitationals," tournaments hosted by other mock trial programs. These differ from the big tournaments in the spring semester (Regionals, ORCS, and Nationals) because they are not directly sponsored by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) and do not impact a team's success in the AMTA playoffs. 

Nonetheless, invitationals are an excellent preparation for the playoff tournaments and doing well in the fall is a sign of prestige for a program. 
Despite success at Regionals the previous two season, earning bid to ORCS in 2015 and 2016, UMBC Mock Trial never had as strong a fall semester as this year. 

For the first time in the Program's history, a team "placed" at a fall invitational tournament, with the A Team earning 4th place at Drexel University's Market Street Invitational. The B Team would add to this by finishing 3rd at Elizabethtown College's Blue Jay Invitational. The A Team rounded out the autumnal victories with a 5th place finish at Temple University's Hooter Invitational.

We are seeking new members for the UMBC chapter for the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics! We are a professional society serving as the focal point for all things aerospace related on the UMBC campus. If you would like to be put on our email mailing list, please email us at umbcaiaa@gmail.com! 

We currently have a Design Build Fly Team and are looking to form a CanSat team and two aerospace robotics teams. We also have the opportunity to participate in software design competitions and tissue development competitions through NASA. 

Design Build Fly: Team goes through the full product life cycle for a remote controlled airplane that has to meet specific mission guidelines that change every year. This year's competition is in Arizona. 

CanSat: Team designs and builds a rocket and atmosphere vehicle. The rocket must launch and have the vehicle detach from it. The vehicle then glides down to the surface taking and transmitting measurements as it goes. 

Robotics Competitions: An email has been sent out with a massive list of possible national aerospace robotics competitions. We are looking to field two more teams this year based on popularity. Join us today to receive details and cast your vote for which team you would like to see formed!

Other: You do not have to be an engineer to join our organization! The more members we have the merrier. The more members we have from different fields, the more we can branch out into other competitions.

An Update on Joining UMBC's Mock Trial Program Hello everyone!

Here are a few updates on how you can become involved as a member of UMBC's mock trial program.

-INVOLVEMENT FEST: Wednesday, September 7, 2016. We will be at UMBC’s Involvement Fest from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Come visit our table on the Quad and ask us any questions you have! 

-INTEREST MEETINGS: Come to an Interest Meeting . You must attend at least one Interest Meeting to try-out for the program, or contact the executive board separately. At the Interest Meeting we will answer further questions about Mock Trial and explain the tryout process. At the end of the Interest Meeting you will tell us whether you wish to tryout. This will allow us to assign you a time slot on try-out night.


-INTEREST MEETING: Monday, September 12, 2016,12:00 PM; Physics 107.

-INTEREST MEETING: Monday, September 12, 2016, 6:30 PM; Student Orgs Space.

-INTEREST MEETING: Tuesday, September 13, 2016, 5:00 PM; Student Orgs Space.


-TRYOUTS: Monday, September 19, 2016. Tryouts for the 2016-17 season will be held on the evening of Monday, September 19, 2016. Tryout times will be assigned following the Interest Meetings. All students that tryout will be informed of the Executive Board’s team decisions within 24 hours of the tryouts.
