Undergraduate or Graduate Research Assistant 

Description: seeking an undergraduate or graduate research assistant to work on a NASA funded project at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  Through this project, you will interact with organizations in the academic, government, and private sectors in South America, Spain, and Portugal, to assess their use of satellite data and other NASA assets. You will assist with 1) research to identify key organizations and experts 2) stakeholder interviews (conducted in Spanish) and survey data collection and analysis and 3) writing articles for magazines and peer-reviewed journals in English and Spanish.

Required

-       Undergraduate or graduate degree (or working towards a degree) in sociology, geography, social data science, public policy or related field.

-       Native Spanish fluency, both oral and written

Preferred

-       Experience with survey and interview data analysis

-       Experience with quantitative and statistical data analysis

-       Lived, studied, or worked in Latin America and/or Spain.  

Time Commitment: 15-20 hours/week

The PROMISE Research Symposium is a unique and powerful opportunity for graduate students, especially those from historically underserved and minoritized backgrounds to present their research, network, and get feedback from faculty and postdoctoral fellows who stand ready to be your mentors, champions, and future colleagues. In addition to poster presentations, there are traditional oral presentations and 3-minute thesis-style oral presentations.

Our PROMISE Research Symposium will be hosted on February 15th, 2024 in the University of Maryland College Park. 

Call for abstracts is open until February 2, 2024.

Location: University of Maryland College Park (UMD), Adele H. Stamp Student Union 
Prince George's Room, 3972 Campus Dr, College Park, MD 20742
Time: 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
Attire: Business Casual
Transportation:There will be free transportation from UMBC to UMD. Please email promise@umbc.edu before February 8 with the subject title "Research Symposium Bus" and your full name and cellphone number. The bus departs from the UMBC Administration Circle at 8:00 AM. This location is in front of the administration building. The bus will depart from UMD at 2:00 PM and arrive at UMBC around 3:00 PM.

Important:
  • Presentation slots are limited to graduate students within the University System of Maryland.
  • Faculty, scientists, and postdocs from universities and organizations (within or outside the University System of Maryland) can participate as mentors and judges for poster and presentation sessions. Please email cperez6@umd.edu to let us know!

This is a reminder that our Holiday potluck is 1 week away! LHGSA would like to invite you to our end of the semester Holiday Potluck Extravaganza.

We encourage all participants to bring any dish, dessert, or drink to share with others that has a cultural significance to you or reminds you of home and the holidays.

Sign-Up Sheet: We've created a sign-up sheet. Please take a moment to let us know what you'll be bringing by December 8th. To ensure everyone can enjoy the party, please mention any dietary preferences or restrictions when signing up. We want to make sure there's something for everyone!
