Lawrence Watt-Evans is a writer of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and non-fiction. To date he has published more than four dozen novels, over one hundred short stories and articles, and a handful of comic books and volumes of non-fiction. He began writing as a young child, selling a short story and several articles under his name. His first novel, The Lure of the Basilisk, was published in 1980 (by Del Rey Books) under the name Lawrence Watt-Evans. He hyphenated his middle and last name to distinguish himself from a non-fiction writer also named Lawrence Evans. Evans has published additional work, primarily that of science fiction, under the pseudonym Nathan Archer.
Evans’ work has received critical acclaim. His novels have been translated into seven different languages and have been enjoyed worldwide. In 1987 he was nominated for a Nebula award and in 1988 he received the Hugo award for best short story from the World Science Fiction Society for his work “Why I Left Harry’s All-Night Hamburgers.” He is best known for his Ethshar fantasy series.
Throughout his career, Evans has been involved in various writing and science fiction associations. He was a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America from 1982 to 2006, he served as Eastern Regional Director and treasurer of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and he was president of Horror Writers Association from 1994 to 1996. Aside from writing, Evans is also part owner of a small chain of comic book shops called Beyond Comics and owner of a small publishing company known as Misenchanted Press. He was previously co-owner of horror magazine Deathrealm before it was discontinued in 1997.

The bulk of the manuscript subseries includes Leonard Nimoy’s Primortals concept art, scripts and promotional materials, Gene Roddenberry’s Lost Universe illustrations and scripts, and Lawrence Watt-Evans editorial column in Comic Buyers Guide entitled “Rayguns, Elves, and Skin-Tight Suits.” The second subseries, notes and drafts, contains any drafts and story development from untitled comics and graphic novels. The literary manuscripts series is divided into two subseries: manuscripts and notes and drafts. The manuscript subseries is the bulk of the Lawrence Watt-Evans collection and is organized alphabetically and chronologically. It includes unpublished drafts, edits, outlines, proposals, sample chapters, and completed manuscripts from Lawrence Watt-Evans’s literary works, including his most popular series such as the Ethshar fantasy series, the Obsidian Chronicles, and the Three Worlds Trilogy. Alongside these series, the manuscript subseries includes Lawrence Watt-Evans opinion editorial entitled “So You Want to be a Writer,” George Pinkerton short stories written by Lawrence Watt-Evans and his wife Julie Evans, and pieces from his compiled Newer York anthology. Heavily featured is Lawrence Watt-Evans Hugo awarded short story, “Why I Left Harry’s All-Night Hamburgers” and its proposed radio drama. The notes and drafts subseries includes any drafts, handwritten notes, and story development from untitled literary manuscripts.
The collection was donated by Lawrence Watt-Evans, April 2017. Includes accession MSS 2017-02.
The collection was processed by interns Lauren Warres and Samantha Rogers, and Graduate Assistant Nikki Vietz, under the supervision of Susan Graham and completed in March 2020. The collection arrived in good condition. Documents were surveyed and rehoused into acid free folders and containers. Letter envelopes were generally discarded unless they were needed for identification of a date of correspondence. Removed from the collection were four fanzines, which were added to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Special Collections Coslet-Sapienza Fantasy and Science Fiction Fanzine Collections. These four fanzines include the September 1993 edition of D.U.F.F (Down Under Fan Fund) and 3 versions of the first edition of SKEW Magazine.
