Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are invited to meet Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. Volkow is coming to UMBC as the Spring 2015 Distinguished Speaker for the ADVANCE program at UMBC. UMBC ADVANCE reached out to PROMISE and worked with Dr. Volkow to create a special session specifically geared to connect with graduate students. Dr. Volkow’s research is on addiction and the brain, but she is also interested in sharing about her role as a woman leader in STEM. Dr. Volkow grew up in Mexico and has been studying addiction since she was a teenager. She has published more than 580 articles, and 90 book chapters and other papers!

Dr. Volkow pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate the toxic effects and addictive properties of abusable drugs. Her studies have documented changes in the dopamine system affecting, among others, the functions of frontal brain regions involved with motivation, drive, and pleasure in addiction. A: Director, Student Affairs Administrative and Business Services.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Make sure the money "works" in the Division of Student Affairs.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: Working with staff throughout the entire Division and problem solving how to do our work in the best possible way.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC? A: As I've only been here a short time, I'm hesitant to put what I've learned so far into such a significant category. I hope to be here a long time and have way more memorable things. So far, the most important thing learned is how to document our activities to avoid an audit finding. A memorable thing learned is how much the Division seems to enjoy being social together. My last job didn't have a lot of personal connections being made so I am very much looking forward to building friendships here. Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?
A: My volunteer passion is VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). January through April of every year, I spend about 8 hours a week helping low income taxpayers complete their returns. It is so satisfying to help someone who doesn't understand the process to get credits and deductions that increase their refund. Often times, I've been able to teach students about education tax credits that helped them pay their tuition. It also keeps me fascinated because one person can never know everything about the tax code!

UMBC announced today that it has preemptively canceled classes for the entire spring 2016 semester due to the potential for inclement weather. “When you look at that stretch of time, encompassing all the winter months, the probability of frozen precipitation approaches 100%” said UMBC communications officer Richard Roller. “Ice and heavy snow can be quite dangerous, but even light flurries are sort of annoying, like a cat that won’t stop licking your arm. Or just cats generally. I mean, what do they want?” Roller explained that UMBC did not want to inflict suffering on anyone by holding classes in such conditions.
According to Roller, if the closure decision proves popular, UMBC might take a similar approach to other inconveniences and challenges for future semesters. He speculated that two such situations might be days with weather so nice it would be criminal to waste it indoors, and mornings when students feel like they “just can’t even” get up for 8:00 a.m. classes. Roller encouraged students who want to see more preemptive closures to vent on social media, observing that a hostile Yak with lots of upvotes is virtually guaranteed to influence positive change on campus.
Over the past decade, UMBC had developed a reputation for being slow to close in inclement weather. Roller believes the spring 2016 closure will cast UMBC in a different light. “Yes, we’re studious, and it’s cool to be smart. But hear this: We are also warm and cozy in our pajamas when we’re binge-watching Netflix on a cold, damp day.” He suggested that instead of “An Honors University in Maryland,” the UMBC tagline could become “When There’s A Chill, We Are Chill.” Immediately following this statement, Roller dropped his microphone and left the building.

A: I am a Student Assistant/Receptionist and Social Media Intern at the Career Center here at UMBC. I just recently joined The Retriever Weekly (student run newspaper) as an Online Editor!
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Student, friend, helper, observer of life, and commuter!
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I think it’s been great meeting the diverse people on campus and going to the social events hosted by seb, so I enjoy being a student! I also like working at the Career Center (CC) because people who know me will ask me questions about how to get job/research/ internship opportunities, and I like helping students figure out how to use the various services offered by the CC.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I think that to make UMBC yours, you have to take the initiative and explore the many resources that UMBC has to offer. I think it is important to be active on campus and you can do that by either joining a group/student organization or maybe find an on-campus job. I asked questions to professors, staff at the Career Center, friends, everyone! It’s good asking questions because professionals are here to answer them.
Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?
A: Just recently, I created a video for the Sustainability Matters group at UMBC. I initially made the video for a class but I wanted to do something more with it. The video basically gives the viewer an introduction on what sustainability is and why it is important to be sustainable not just on-campus, but also in your personal life. I did some research and I decided to contact the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, Tanvi Gadhia. Thanks to her, I was able to find out how to bring my ideas to life in the video and I was able to feature two sustainability interns, which was great! Long story short, I wanted to make a video to show how small actions such as recycling, using less electricity, and composting does in fact help the overall state of the environment. Let’s make UMBC a green campus!

Below is a list of the students who submitted applications to run for SGA positions in the April election. This list is preliminary and not final (the names listed below will be checked for eligibility and may appear differently on the ballot, including their order). All candidates must receive a number of votes equal to at least 5% of the number of total votes cast in the election. Write-in votes are permitted in SGA elections. Candidates are elected by plurality. For Senate, the top eleven vote-getters will be elected; for Finance Board, the top five vote-getters will be elected. The election will take place through myUMBC on Monday, April 20th, Tuesday, April 21st, and Wednesday, April 22nd. On those three days, the polls will be open from 8am to 12pm and from 8pm to 12am. The results will be released on Thursday, April 23rd at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Organization Space on the 2nd Floor of The Commons.
