Discourse analysis, or the study of language in use or language “beyond the sentence,” has long been recognized in linguistics as one of its most expansive, yet least defined, areas. It also transcends the field, fitting comfortably in disciplines as varied as communication studies, anthropology, sociology, and education (among many others). In recent years, discourse analysis, both in linguistics and in related fields, has grown exponentially, and that growth has been accompanied by a proliferation of approaches, each with its own foci, key concepts, methods, and touchstone publications. In 1994, Schiffrin identified the following approaches to discourse: Speech Act Theory, Interactional Sociolinguistics, The Ethnography of Communication, Pragmatics, Conversation Analysis, and Variation Analysis. To this list, we might now add Critical Discourse Analysis, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Mediated Discourse Analysis, Discursive Psychology, Visual Analysis, Cultural Discourse Analysis, Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis, and Action-Implicative Discourse Analysis, as well as multiple integrated approaches that are not easily classified.
 
GURT 2018 will bring together leading researchers from around the world and from various disciplines to take stock of current research and foster communication across approaches to discourse. In keeping with the spirit of diversity, we welcome abstracts for individual papers, posters, and colloquia that engage with the field’s various topical and theoretical foci, types and sources of data, methodological questions, and practical applications. Click here to view and download the conference schedule in PDF format.

The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers U.S. and international scientists the opportunity to advance their research while contributing to NASA’s scientific goals. The NPP supports fundamental science; explores the undiscovered; promotes intellectual growth; and encourages scientific connections.

Selected by a competitive peer-review process, NPP Fellows complete one- to three-year Fellowship appointments that advance NASA’s missions in earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, space bioscience, aeronautics, and engineering, human exploration and space operations, and astrobiology.

Current research opportunities can be viewed online: https://npp.usra.edu/opportunities/ Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hand before beginning the fellowship but may apply while completing the degree requirements. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals eligible for J-1 status as a Research Scholar may apply.

Stipends start at $60,000 per year, with supplements for high cost-of-living areas and for certain academic specialties. Financial assistance is available for relocation as well as subsidized health insurance, and $10,000 per year is provided for professional and programmatic travel.

UMBC's college access/readiness program, Path Before Me, is actively recruiting Spring volunteers.  We hope to have students placed in site schools by the end of February.  Volunteers will work in city schools, providing "college coaching" to high school juniors. 

Last semester, we had 13 student volunteers, who held over 100 individual coaching sessions with our high school students. Our youth feedback has been great--so we are excited for this Spring!

To begin tutoring, you will need to register through the Shriver Center.

Times:
Tuesdays 2:30p-5p (City College)
Wednesdays 2:30p-5p (Ben Franklin)
Thursdays 10a-1p (Poly)

Transportation:
One student from each school site group will responsible for driving, and will be eligible for a $500 stipend. This student can drive their own car, or the Shriver Van. Once we have our site groups, we will identify this coordinator, and establish our carpool system.

What you do:

"Coach" high school juniors around the SAT, the college application process and experience. You will meet either in small groups, or one on one with your mentee, at their schools. Snacks are provided, as well as mentoring materials, and an on site coordinator. 

You can volunteer at one or two sites, if interested. 

City--will focus very closely on SAT Prep. The school has material for us to use, which includes practice problems and building study skills. 

Ben Franklin and Poly--will focus more holistically on the college process, including essay writing, the application, the college experience, and the SAT.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the College of Arts and Humanities, and the University of West Georgia (UWG) invite you to celebrate the 33rd Annual Interdisciplinary Conference in the Humanities, October 25-27, 2018. We welcome submissions from across the Humanities, Fine Arts, and the Social and Natural Sciences, dealing with INTERSECTIONALITIES/INTERCONNECTIONS/LIMINALITIES and the many relations and intersections between them. Papers in French, German and Spanish are welcomed as part of a pre-organized panel.

Submissions for panels of 3-4 presenters are especially welcome.  For panel proposals please submit the panel title, abstracts, and contact information for all speakers and for the panel moderator.  Proposals are due by May 15th, 2018.

The Critical Feminist Studies Working Group [CFSWG] of the Cultural Studies Association [www.culturalstudiesassociation.org] is pleased to invite submissions for one roundtable and one panel to be presented at the 2018 conference, which will take place at Carnegie Mellon University from May 31-June 2:

Roundtable on “Interventions” in Critical Feminist Theory

  • What are ways to conceptualize interventions? Can they be productive, energizing forces for theory and practice or problematic obstacles to feminist progress?
  • What cultural spaces/cultural products/case studies operate as a promotion and/or policing of interventional strategies? How does this limit or expand the intersectional lens of Critical Feminist Studies?
  • What are the cisgendering, racializing, and disabling effects of feminist interventions? How does neoliberalism and globalization play a part in these effects?
Panel on Critical Feminist Studies and the Possibilities for Social Justice Interventions

  • What is the future of social justice interventions under Trump’s administration? 
  • Should we continue to imagine ‘feminist utopias’ as a strategy of intervention, or are there other possible conceptions and strategies to develop and defend?
  • How might new or reframed Critical Feminist Pedagogy be developed as a form of social justice intervention(s)?
  • We encourage papers that draw from diverse fields including but not limited to: women's and gender studies, sexuality studies, feminist philosophy, sociology, anthropology, political economy, critical race theory, postcolonial theory, media studies, critical disability studies, and/or cultural studies.

Harris will discuss her book, "A Bound of Flesh: Monetary Sanctions as Punishment of the Poor" where she presents her research about the contemporary relationship between the United States' systems of social control and inequality and specifically, the expansion of and use of monetary sanctions as a criminal sentencing tool. Monetary sanctions are a type of criminal sentence imposed by state superior courts nationally, and include fines, fees, costs, interest, surcharges, and restitution.

Organized by the School of Public Policy and co-sponsored by Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology and Health  Administration and Policy, and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Reducing Harm via Participatory Theatre: A Two-Part Workshop

In LESS than TWO weeks, Koli Tengella and Brian Francoise will be leading a Participatory Theatre workshop at Everyman Theatre (FREE. Should be dope -- :0) Commitment to both sessions is required). Please take advantage of this unique workshop opportunity and/or pass along to a friend or professional who could benefit from skill building, finding a story, and maybe even a little healing. Designed for non-actors ...

Using theatre and social change techniques, participants will develop a “story” about your personal relationship to issues such as drug use, treatment, recovery and harm reduction. Sure to be fun and galvanizing, the workshop will empower participants with newfound community building and civic arts skills to be add to their toolkit for use in your work and life which can include behavioral health organizational work. The two part workshop is specifically designed for non-actors; people with little or no theater experience are encouraged to take advantage of this workshop. Must participate in both days!! Co-led by Koli Tengella and Brian Francoise.

A story circle event will take place tomorrow at the Arch Social Club from 3 to 6 pm. Dr. Bev Bickel, Sherella Cupid, Frank Anderson and others will be leading this conversation. 


The 2018 People's State of the Union will take place from January 25-February 4, 2018.

In January of most years, the President delivers a State of the Union Address highlighting the past year and suggesting priorities for the coming year. It’s a broadcast from one to many. But democracy is a conversation, not a monologue. Understanding the state of our union takes We the People reflecting in our own communities on our challenges and opportunities locally, nationally, and globally.
Since 2015, the USDAC has hosted the People’s State of the Union as an invitation to supplement the President’s stories by coming together in our own homes, schools, houses of worship, and community organizations to share our own take on the state of our union. Thousands of people in more than 350 communities have taken part over the last three years.

The People’s State of the Union has two main parts: Story Circles across the nation, and a collaboratively composed Poetic Address to the Nation. The USDAC offers toolkits and online trainings to support anyone hosting a Story Circle, bringing people together to share stories from their own experience. Stories are uploaded to an online story portal where they can be shared and browsed. Then—inspired by these stories—an invited group of writers collaboratively composes the Poetic Address to the Nation, performed and broadcast live. https://usdac.us/psotu/
