Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my eighth semester at UMBC.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I just finished serving as the Speaker of the SGA Senate.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Full time cat herder, student, hilarious person, slinky untangler, and activist.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I really love answering other people's questions! I have somehow become an encyclopedia of sorts for UMBC. You can ask me about anything on campus and I have an answer for you! From dining to activism to academic policies, I am your gal!
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: If I had to sum up my experience in one phrase, it would be; give it a go. There is nothing conventional about UMBC. If you want something to happen, just do it. This campus was built by us, and there is always room for improvements. We have such a sense of community at UMBC, which just makes everything that much more real. There is no way to fail on our campus, aside from not doing something.
Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?
A: I've been around the block a few times! I have helped organize and been a part of Elect Her, Take Back the Night, Election Night Extravaganza, STRiVE, Stress Free Zone, LeadingOrgs, CelebratingOrgs, Shared Governance, Involvement Fest, Playfair, and a few other things since coming to UMBC, most of them more than once. These things all had the goal of educating students through community, outside of the classroom. That's really where I found my passion to be at UMBC - empowerment through education. Throughout these events I've interacted with thousands of students, and I can't think of a better way to have spent these past 4 years.

A: Every circle of friends needs someone that likes wacky music, a photographer, a person that is into politics, a scientist, an artist, a person obsessed with technology, a lover, a fighter, and a comedian.

The Summer Dissertation House @ UMBC, July 11-14, 2017. Graduate students who plan to participate should follow the application procedures on the application web page for the Dissertation House.
Open application period: Early Bird May 22 until June 2, 2017. Late registration June 3 – June 18, 2017 (Applications received during the early bird period will have priority)
(Please note that there are only 15 to 18 slots for this event, consider applying early)
Applications received after June 18, 2017, will be considered for the DH waiting list. More information about the Dissertation House: http://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/about/
- The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM - 5 PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 11 through Friday, July 14.
- Students must plan to attend the full session, for each of the 4 days.
- The daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures and 5 hours of writing per day.
- Breakfast, lunch, and a snack will be served daily.
- The Dissertation House is free for UMBC's graduate students.
- There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.

Culture, Language, and Social Practice (CLASP) V Conference
September 15-17, 2017
Boulder, CO
CLASP V is the fifth multidisciplinary conference run by graduate students that promotes the broad connections between culture, language, and society grounded in empirical research. We hope to once again bring together an array of national and international scholars from diverse countries and sub-disciplines for the CLASP V conference this year in Boulder, CO.
The conference is open to students and faculty who are interested in language, social practice, and interdisciplinary study. Abstracts for papers covering topics in various areas of sociocultural linguistics are invited and are due by June 15th, 2017. Examples of possible frameworks or analytic traditions may include, but are not limited to:
Sociolinguistics
Linguistic anthropology
Narrative studies
Critical discourse analysis
Conversation analysis
Language and identity
Discourse pragmatics
Computer-mediated discourse
Ethnography of speaking
Language and literacy
Verbal art and performance
Bilingualism and code-switching

The conference will take place on September 15-17, 2017 at the University of Colorado Boulder. Our confirmed speakers are:

Natasha Shrikant (Communication, University of Colorado–Boulder)

Submission Guidelines
Please email an abstract of up to 500 words to clasp.abstracts@gmail.com by June 15th, 2017. The conference will include a paper competition for graduate students (see details below). The abstract should be attached in Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF format and should contain NO information identifying the author(s) of the paper. Abstracts are evaluated on an anonymous basis. In the body of the email, please include the following information:
- Name(s) of author(s)
- University or other affiliation(s) of the author(s)
- Email address(es) of the author(s)
- Title of proposed paper
- 3-5 keywords describing the paper
- Presentation equipment requirements
- Any additional comments
Best Graduate Student Paper in Culture, Language, and Social Practice
The winner of this competition will have their name mentioned in the official conference program and will be offered a student plenary spot at the conference. This student plenary will be approximately 45 minutes and will provide an opportunity for the winner to share their research in more depth than a typical presentation slot. Note however that the plenary spot is a potential honor and depends on the quality of submissions received.
To be considered in the competition for the student plenary, authors (graduate students only) should submit a paper of up to 8,000 words plus references. Your submission email should indicate whether you would like to be considered for a regular conference presentation if you do not win the plenary spot.
Please email your (up to) 8,000 word-paper to clasp.abstracts@gmail.com by June 15th, 2017. The paper should be attached in Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF format and should contain NO information identifying the author(s) of the paper.

The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) seeks applications for postdoctoral research projects for the fall of 2017. The EERE Postdoctoral Research Awards offer recent Ph.D.. recipients the opportunity to conduct applied solar energy Research and Developemnt at universities, national laboratories, and other research facilities. Research must contribute to the SunShot Initiative goal to make solar energy technologies cost-competitive with traditional energy sources by 2020.

International Colloquium on “Language Skills for Economic and Social Inclusion”

General goals
This conference aims at exploring the relationship between individual language skills and people’s integration in the economy and in society in general with a special focus on the labour market. Language skills can be viewed as human capital having a positive influence on people’s income, employability and social inclusion. This holds for immigrants, refugees and mobile people who can benefit from the knowledge of the official language(s) of the host country, but also for citizens learning foreign languages and using them in the workplace.
Research questions
The number of potential research questions that are relevant for the conference is large. Here we present a non-exhaustive list that can help orienting prospective participants:
Do language skills significantly contribute to the participation of individuals in the labour market?
Which languages are more rewarded in the labour market and at which level of fluency? What differences among countries or regions can be observed in this respect?
Do language skills improve international economic integration and trade?
How does language competence affect the social inclusion of migrants and refugees? Which sociolinguistic barriers can hinder inclusion?
Are language skills an important variable in employers’ recruiting decisions?
Do some economic sectors make a more intensive use of language skills than other?
What is the role of language policy in facilitating social inclusion and social cohesion?
How do language education policies affect individuals’ migration decisions? Do foreign language skills significantly facilitate international labour mobility and therefore the economic integration of the European and the global labour market as a whole?
What is the relationship between language skills in a lingua franca (e.g. English) and social integration in the host country where the lingua franca is not the locally dominant language? What differences can be found among low-skilled migrants and high-skilled (or “expats”) in this respect?
Does a lingua franca increase social inclusion, or does it promote the emergence of separate networks of communication? What are the sociological implications of this?

The length of abstracts should not exceed 350 words. Abstracts must be submitted to the address “templito@hu-berlin.de” by 15 May 2017. The successful applicants will be notified by 30 June 2017.

Summer School on Ling. Policy, Ling. Planning & Evaluation
The Institute of Linguistic Research (INIL) of the University of Costa Rica, in collaboration with the Esperantic Studies Foundation (ESF) (http://www.esperantic.org/en/home/), invites to the Summer School on Linguistic Policy, Linguistic Planning and Evaluation (PLPLE), which aims to open an international space for discussion on Linguistic Policy and Linguistic Planning.
The Summer School will consist of the description and analysis of the fundamental concepts of Linguistic Policy, Linguistic Planning and Linguistic Policy Evaluation, as well as its objectives and methods. During the four sessions of the Summer School, the exponents will refer to specific cases that they have investigated. Of the four sessions, three of them will be held in English and one in Spanish. At the same time, there will be a series of lectures related to the Summer School topics.
The Summer School will last a week, with 20 hours, in a total of 4 days (except on August the 2nd, which is a holiday). Each invited speaker will give a four-hour workshop. We are considering the possibility that postgraduate students of the University of Costa Rica receive a credit for their attendance*.

Duration: 4 days, for a 20 hour total.
Type of certificate given: Participation or attendance, depending on each case*.
Deadline for registration: Tuesday, June 6th, 2017, with limited capacity.
Registration fee: General public: $100,00 USD.
Students and functionaries of the University of Costa Rica do not pay the registration fee.

For the purposes of the Fulbright Scholar Program, an applicant is eligible for postdoctoral awards if they will finish all of the requirements for their Ph.D. program by February 1, 2018, or have received their Ph.D. in the last five years (unless otherwise stipulated by an award description).
