Jacki Stone, Special Assistant to the Associate Vice President Student Affairs and LLC student (Cohort 18), is currently running the Relationship Violence Awareness and Prevention Advocates program. She is sending this invitation to potential advocates:

I wanted to share with you all that the Fall 2017 application for the Relationship Violene Prevention and Awareness Advocates is open and we are really excited to welcome a new group.

As you and the students you work with are thinking ahead to fall semester, considering leadership opportunities, and looking for important ways to connect with our communities, please consider the Relationship Violence Awareness and Prevention Advocates. This program is for students (grad and undergrad), faculty, AND staff!

The UMBC Relationship Violence Prevention Advocates program is a comprehensive program funded by a grant from Verizon. The program evolves each year and is designed to educate the UMBC Community on specific relationship violence prevention information.

The Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA) invites you to its 2017 Annual Meeting. May 1st has been historically linked to international workers’ rights. More recently, May Day has served as a national day of action to raise awareness about immigration rights and the need to keep families together as they fight for a better life.

On this May Day, let’s come together as a community to recognize the contributions immigrants make every day to UMBC and our nation.

Students, Staff, Faculty, Service Workers, Administrators: Join us on May 1st, 2017 for a day-long celebration in the plaza in front of the UC.

Come when you can!

Regardless of where we were born, how we look or the language we speak, let’s pledge support to a strong, inclusive, safe UMBC for all.

We will create and share the many ways immigrants contribute to UMBC (and the U.S.).

We invite our LLC Community to the roundtable discussion "Women in Activism", organized by the Women's Center. This discussion features Dr. Bev Bickel, Jacki Stone (cohort 18), and Iman Said (student activist).

The panel will take place on April 20th, 4:00 pm, at the Women's Center Lounge, located in The Commons, ground floor.

Dr. Christine Mallinson has recently produced a 5-minute podcast titled "The Revelatory Power of Language," for the Maryland Humanities Council's "Humanities Connection" series for WYPR 88.1. In this podcast, Dr. Mallinson shares what our word patterns can reveal.

Dr. Rebecca Boehling, Professor of History and Director of the Judaic Studies Program and the Global Studies Program at UMBC and former director of the International Tracing Service (ITS), will speak on:

"Remembering Holocaust Victims: The Post-Shoah Search for Closure and Identity Across Generations"

The event is free and open to the public.  A small reception will follow the talk.

The Dresher Center for the Humanities invites applications for two Residential Faculty Research Fellowships for spring 2018. Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Dresher Center Research Fellows will reside at least one day a week in the Dresher Center and receive release from teaching (up to two course releases) in order to work on a significant humanities research project or the training necessary to embark on such a project. Faculty wishing to develop expertise in a new field or discipline towards a future project are also encouraged to apply. Each fellow will have the use of a private office in the Dresher Center and will be awarded $500 to hire an undergraduate research assistant (junior or senior) for the semester.

All full-time, tenured and tenure-track faculty members pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are welcome to submit a proposal. Applications are especially encouraged from, but not limited to, full-time faculty with appointments in departments and programs with a humanities focus. Two fellowships are available. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board, with decisions by mid-July 2017.
