On November 2-4, 2017, we invite you to join us at the University of Central Florida to explore
“The Possible Worlds of Digital Humanities.” This year, we hope to address the unsolved hard problems and explore the new opportunities of the digital humanities, including
- challenges of monolingualism within the digital humanities;
- indigenous culture, decolonial and post-colonial theory and technology;
- technology and education–open learning, peer learning, and issues of access,
- equity for primary and/or higher education;
- communication of knowledge, publishing, and intellectual property;
- digital cultural heritage and hegemony;
- interdisciplinary goals and conversations in digital humanities;
- digital humanities and gender, race, and other identities;
- simulation, modeling, and visualization;
- games and gaming, including for learning; and
- community development, including the importance of art and culture districts.
- PLUS project demos, digital and/or poster sessions, and a curated media arts show exhibition.
We welcome applications from scholars at all stages of their careers from all disciplines and fields, from private sector companies and public sector organizations, from artists and public intellectuals.

ACLS Grants and Fellowship Programs Workshop
The Commons, Room 329
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (sign-in and refreshments from 9:30)
ACLS supports scholars in the humanities and social sciences at all career stages through a range of fellowship and grant programs. In this session, ACLS program officer Rachel Bernard will share information about ACLS's programs and offer tips for strong applications. The workshop will also include a mock peer-review panel with ample opportunity for discussion.
Humanities Proposal-Writing Session
Dresher Center Conference Room, PAHB 216
12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (lunch served at noon)
UMBC faculty are invited to participate in a hands-on proposal-writing session with expert facilitator, Carole Sargent. Faculty will learn strategies for developing effective humanities grant and book proposals and workshop a draft proposal for their own research projects. Participants should prepare a 300-word draft project description to work on during the session.

About the Presenters
Rachel Bernard is a Program Officer at ACLS in the Office of Fellowship and Public Programs. She completed her Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2012.
Carole Sargent is the founding Director of the Office of Scholarly Publications at Georgetown University and of Academic Authors, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting faculty in scholarly publishing and grant submission. She has broad experience creating workshops in consultation with national funding organizations. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and has published widely in 18th century literary history.

As scholars within the University System of Maryland, and part of the community served by PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP, you have been immersed in environments that carry a vision for social responsibility. On Wednesday, April 19, 2017, Dr. Darryl Williams, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, Tufts School of Engineering will come to UMBC to have a conversation with undergraduate and graduate students about sharing research on a global level. His discussion, “Giving your research a global platform” will include conversations about his experiences with sharing research in Panama, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and other countries. Dr. Williams is Research Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Tufts University, and he explores the effects of nanostructured materials on biological systems. Dr. Williams also serves as the Director for Tufts’ Center for STEM Diversity, and the current President of the national Minorities in Engineering Division (MIND) for the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Prior to coming to Tufts, Dr. Williams was a program officer at the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Williams received the Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland College Park, and the B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Hampton University.
