A: Senior Lecturer in Gender and Women's Studies and Director of Women Involved in Learning and Leadership


Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A:   I teach about feminism, activism, and social justice.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love teaching--and I do a lot of it. My job is basically to read interesting things and talk about them with interesting people who've (hopefully) read it too. I learn so much from students, and I hope they learn from our discussions too.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:   You have the right to be wrong. I learned this in college, and it keeps on being true. We learn better when we risk our ideas, when we make ourselves a little uncomfortable, and when we are willing to change our minds. Learning isn't about what we think and whether or not we're right. It's about learning *how* to think, and letting ourselves change and be changed by that thinking. Still learning over here!


Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A:  My work as Director of WILL has been incredibly important to me. I help facilitate student projects and have organized formal leadership training opportunities for the campus, including the yearly Elect Her workshop. This workshop helps students--especially women students--nail down the strategies and tactics to run successful student campaigns, and hopefully gets them ready to run for office after college. We need more women on our ballots, and to do that, we have to run!

(Apply Now for 2017-2018)

SGA candidate applications for 2017-2018 are due on Monday, March 27th at 12:00 noon ET. 

This is the first of a few items I'll post to provide some background information about the 20 available elected positions (President, Executive Vice President, Vice President for Student Organizations, Treasurer, 11 Senators, and 5 Finance Board Representatives). The candidate application can be found here.

The SGA Senate

Membership: The Senate’s members include 11 Senators elected by the student body. In addition, the Senate can add up to three nonvoting First Year Ambassadors each fall. Also, the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President for Student Organizations, Treasurer and SGA Advisor, as well as UMBC’s President and Vice President for Student Affairs, are ex-officio (nonvoting) members of the Senate.

The voting members elect a Speaker, who runs the weekly meetings and organizes the Senate’s work, and an Assistant Speaker, who helps the Speaker and organizes members’ participation on UMBC committees.

Key Responsibilities: 
  • Communicating with the Student Body: More than any other branch in SGA, the Senate’s job is to listen to the voices of UMBC undergraduates and find new ways to respond to their needs, concerns and aspirations. Senators find and develop multiple avenues for connecting with students, sparking and collecting their ideas, and supporting them in their own projects to improve the UMBC experience.  
  • Initiating Action to Improve Students’ Experiences: The Senate is where many of SGA’s new initiatives are born: an incubator of ideas and plans to improve UMBC policies, programs and practices. Senators work together, both at the weekly meetings and in smaller groups throughout each week, to envision needed changes, develop practical plans, and coordinate the work of implementing them, involving and receiving support from Executive Branch officers as appropriate.  

    For example, the Senate could decide that what the student body needs is new dining options in The Commons. A team of Senators would work together, coordinating with the President, to determine how to pursue these new options (identifying key decision-makers, researching the history of the existing dining options, developing a plan for advocating changes, engaging and informing the student body), and work to make the change happen. If the Senate develops an initiative that requires steady, ongoing attention in subsequent years, the initiative may shift to the Executive Branch for implementation after the first year.  
  • Taking Positions/Considering Legislation: When SGA formally takes a position on an issue, such as a bill being considered by the state legislature, it does so in the form of legislation approved by a majority vote of the Senate (which can be vetoed by the President, subject to override by a 2/3 vote of the Senate). The Senate also has or shares responsibility for approving the annual budget, allocations of funds from SGA’s reserve account, and the appointment of certain SGA officers. In addition, the Senate manages a fund from which it can make allocations to SGA projects. 
  • Representing the Student Body: Senators represent all students on UMBC committees (consisting of staff, faculty and students) that establish campus policies and practices. Fulfilling this responsibility entails both attending and participating actively in committee meetings and communicating with other SGA members and the student body about what the committees are doing. (This responsibility is shared with the Executive Branch). 
  • Participating in SGA Initiatives and Activities: Senators work with members of the other branches of SGA to contribute to positive change on campus. 
Guiding Philosophy: The Senate is a focal point for creativity and action. The Senator’s job description is intentionally more flexible than those in other branches, because the specific work Senators take on from year to year is most likely to change in response to new opportunities and needs.

The Senate typically works most effectively when students outside of SGA are involved in its work from the early brainstorming stage through the end of an initiative’s implementation. Members of the UMBC administration and faculty are far more likely to take Senators and their ideas seriously when it is clear that many other students are involved and committed to the same goals. While the Senate sometimes can serve as a problem-solver and advocate on other students’ behalf, it strives to keep other students at the center, and may even play a secondary but crucial role as a supporter of other students’ initiatives.

Because its initiatives can yield new programs and services that require implementation year after year, the Senate must cultivate support and cooperative relationships within SGA, especially with the Executive Branch. Doing so diminishes the possibility that Senators’ good work will be abandoned at the end of their terms.  

Eligibility Requirements and Time Commitment: From the SGA Constitution: "In order to be eligible to seek and hold elected SGA offices, or appointed offices for which a stipend is provided and/or the officer is responsible for supervising other appointed officers, an individual must be a UMBC undergraduate, have at least a cumulative 2.25 GPA, maintain at least a 2.25 semester GPA while in office, and neither be on academic probation nor under disciplinary suspension (whether in effect, imposed for a future time period or held in abeyance). [...] [A]ll Senate and Representatives must adhere to the attendance requirements determined by their respective legislative body and as outlined in each respective body’s procedural rules to maintain eligibility." 

The Senator position requires attendance at weekly meetings. The Senate meets every Monday starting at 5:30 p.m. Anyone can attend, but Senators must attend. If you are running for Senator, you are not able to enroll in a class that will be in session after 5:30 p.m. on Mondays during the 2017-2018 academic year. (Meetings occasionally run as late as 11:00 p.m.).

#QueerAF: (Re)presenting Gender & Sexuality in History & Cultural Studies 

5th Annual Dean Hopper NEW SCHOLARS Conference
5-6 May 2017
The Ehinger Center, Drew University, Madison, NJ

#QueerAF is a hashtag used on Twitter and Tumblr by trans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, androgynous and gender fluid users to celebrate content that is unapologetically queer, or “queer as fuck.” The use of “AF” in the title of this conference indicates our interest in exploring the power of language to form community in a digital space through the assignation of #QueerAF. The invocation of slurs such as queer, dyke, homo, slut, bitch, and tranny degrades individuals, and those same words have been subsequently reclaimed, yet not without deep controversy. Establishing a conference that is “#QueerAF” represents our resistance to societal politeness by participating in the reclamation of “queer” and disrupting the heteronormative discourse that terms certain behaviors and bodies dangerous or degenerate.

The conference theme draws on multiple disciplines and perspectives on gender and sexuality, inviting challenges to the heteronormative, cisgender, patriarchal discourse of history. Proposals are invited for papers on any aspect of Gender & Sexuality across all time periods and geographical locations.  In particular, this conference will be centering around three major themes: Historical & Cultural studies, Linguistics & Theory, and Activism & Media.

Steven Dashiell (Cohort 16) has recently published a blog entry titled “Resolving the Study of Geek, or What to Do When You Become “That Brony Researcher”” In the article, Steven explains how he has been able to identify and work with his dissertation topic. He mentions how “thinking strategically” from an early stage, an idea instilled by his LLC advisor, opens the path to doctoral students to engage with research and to identify themes that will become crucial in their dissertation.

This is a very good read that we want to share with our LLC community. Thank you Steven!

Name: Maniraj Jeyaraju

Major: Interdisciplinary Studies

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A:  It's my fourth year at UMBC.


Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A:   I am a URA Scholar, Grand Challenge Scholar, and Spark Committee Leader.


Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A:  Researcher, Student Advocate, Student Representative for INDS Program, and a civic agent
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:  A common theme among my roles is the capacity to learn from new environments. Whether in the classroom, during research, or in the real world, I enjoy learning from others, even if their perspectives conflict with my own. Moreover, the ability to make change and to innovate inspire me, as I am constantly looking for a better model. 
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:    This is a great place to diversify your interests; become a sponge and absorb information that excites you. Though we all have career goals, I have been surprised at the countless number of occasions I have learned about myself and career path from people outside of my interests. A light bulb moment is often one conversation away with someone whom you have never met. 


Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A:   I have been deeply involved with the Interdisciplinary Studies Program and served as a past president of the INDS Council of Majors. In the past couple of years, I led student events and built a partnership with the Delrey School in Halethorpe. 

In my last year, I set my sights to a macro-goal of Spark, an initiative to engage student organizations in interdisciplinary community service projects. I am working with amazing colleagues, Ella Hawkins and Stanley Wang, to coordinate this effort. We are building relationships with Baltimore nonprofits, and we hope to empower both the UMBC and Baltimore communities through this project. If you're interested, contact me :)

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I definitely recommend taking the hidden elevator on the second floor of the library to the basement. They have some pretty cool stuff down there!
