Re-Imagining Multicultural Education in Changing Times

In these times of change locally and globally those who advocate for and work toward greater equity and social justice in education must strengthen their resolve to act on behalf of students. We are forced to ask what is the role of Multicultural Education and its educators in times of great challenge? The 27th Annual International Conference of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) will provide a forum for practitioners, researchers, community activists, and policymakers to engage in dialogue, share research, and offer workable solutions to the issues we face in education. It is vital for everyone to participate in this important work in K-12 schools, universities, communities and every space where learning occurs to ensure that we build a better world where all children can thrive. The NAME 2017 conference, in Salt Lake City provides an opportunity for thought provoking exchange, renewed vision and taking action on issues affecting all aspects of diversity and social inequities experienced by students in their learning contexts. We remain hopeful, inspired, and engaged as we recommit ourselves to the cause of justice and equity in education and society at large.

While every undergraduate is a member of UMBC's Student Government Association, there are 20 students each year who devote extra time to organizing and supporting other undergraduate students in making UMBC their own. Those 20 serve as elected officers of SGA: President, Executive Vice President, VP for Student Organizations, Treasurer, Senators (11) and Finance Board Representatives (5). (Read more about these positions here). Officer terms run for one year beginning May 15th.

The SGA Election Board released the candidate application this morning, and I hope you'll consider applying to run for one of these positions for 2017-2018.

SGA positions offer a chance to work with others on initiatives that matter and make a difference on campus and can empower all students. But more than that, running for and serving in these positions is an opportunity to identify who you are and what gifts you contribute to the campus and local communities. You don't need any experience; you will receive significant support and gain access to many resources as you work with others to identify and solve problems.

I recognize that it takes courage to make yourself vulnerable and to put your name and ideas in front of your peers, but I see so many students who take that risk and never look back, exploring issues and passions, forming friendships, and developing their confidence and sense of direction.

Applications are due Monday, March 27th at noon.

Hometown: Pine Hill, NJ

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A:  This is my first year.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Coordinator for Student Engagement

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A:   Coordinate programs to help first year students get involved on campus.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:  I love providing students with opportunities to fall in love with UMBC and understand why they chose the right school. I still feel a sense of immense pride and admiration for my alma mater and I want students to leave UMBC feeling the same way. I strive to find ways for students to find their niche and get involved and stay involved so that when they look back on their college experience they feel like they made the most of it.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:   Over the years, I have learned the true value of building meaningful and long-lasting relationships with people. It's important to have a support network that you can go to for personal and professional advice and you develop that network by really valuing and working on building strong relationships. Sometimes it's as simple as starting with a hello and going from there.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A:  One of the first projects I worked on when I came to UMBC was the Cultural Showcase: Pangea. I had the opportunity to work with an incredible group of students who developed a vision at the STRiVE Leadership Retreat to begin the academic year by showcasing the vast diversity at UMBC through the cultural and ethnic student organizations. It was an honor to be a part of such a major Welcome Week event and it reminded me why I love the work I do.

A: Tacos.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A:   I LOVE going to the UMBC Basketball games with my work friends. I still remember when a large group of us went and the Retrievers went into double over time and won. I was jumping out of my seat so excited.  I am invested in the team and it makes me so happy when they Retrievers win.

Maryland Voter Registration Application. If you're already registered but have moved since the last election, you can use the Maryland Voter Registration Application to change your address.

If you're a student from out of state wondering whether you can register to vote in Maryland, here's some information for you.

Maryland Dates and Deadlines

Maryland’s 2020 primary election will take place on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. The general election will take place on November 3, 2020.

Early voting in the primary election will take place Thursday, April 16, 2020 through Thursday, April 23, 2020. Early voting locations will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The deadline to register to vote before the 2020 primary election is Tuesday, April 7, 2020.

Register to Vote in States Other than Maryland
