University System of Maryland (USM) Dissertation House at the PROMISE Summer Success Institute – August 18-19, 2016 (with activities on 8/20-8/21) – The Hotel at Arundel Preserve, Hanover, Maryland. 

UMBC and PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP are sponsoring the 2016 system-wide Dissertation House for graduate students in STEM programs.  The writing and research retreat will take place at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve.   Lodging for 3 nights and meals are provided for student participants.   Twelve students from the USM system schools will be chosen to participate in this research and writing retreat.  http://www.thehotelarundel.com/. Eligibility for the SSI Dissertation House:

1) Enrolled in a STEM graduate program (based on the NSF-supported fields per the NSFGRFP) at one of the schools within the University System of Maryland

2) Underrepresented according to the NSF Definition for AGEP, U.S. Citizen

Per NSF.gov: AGEP is committed to the national goal of increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities (URMs), including those with disabilities, entering and completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate education and postdoctoral training to levels representative of the available pool. URMs include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.

This event is part of the 2016 PROMISE Summer Success Institute. Following the Dissertation House (DH) sessions on Thursday and Friday, all DH participants will be required to continue participation in the PROMISE SSI on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve.

All 12 participants will check in on Thursday, and check out on Sunday.

If you do not fit the eligibility criteria for the USM PROMISE Dissertation House at the 2016 SSI, please join us for the “Summer Challenge 2016 Dissertation House ONLINE.” You will be able to blog daily, and work along with others who are attending the Dissertation House in-person. You can participate in the Summer Challenge 2016 Dissertation House ONLINE from any location in the world. The Dissertation House online does not have any space limits. Invite friends to join. This Dissertation House experience is open to students from all disciplines, all backgrounds, any school.

The UMBC Office of the Vice President for Research has issued a Call for Applications for the NEH 2017 Summer Stipends program as a Limited Submission Opportunity. UMBC may select two nominations to advance to full proposals to be submitted to the NEH by September 29, 2016. The deadline for internal nominations is July 15, 2016.

NEH Summer Stipends support individuals in advancing research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Though this is an NEH program, many faculty members in the arts and social sciences work on projects that the NEH might fund. 

Summer Stipends support projects at any stage of development. Outright awards of $6,000 will be given for two consecutive months of full-time research during summer 2017.

Be nimble, be quick: 

This graduate assistantship is the manager for all communications between GSA, OGSL, graduate students, and the greater UMBC/Baltimore community.  This includes e-mail inbox management, updating social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the MyUMBC portal), and co-managing the GSA website (recently formatted in WordPress and Google).  This GA manages logistics of all GSA events (catering, room reservations, scheduling), including monthly Senate meetings and social hours, National Graduate Student Week (spring), the 39^th Graduate Research Conference, and special events (i.e. Fall Welcome Picnic, GSA Awards Banquet).

Postdoctoral Fellows Program for Faculty Diversity

Program Description

The University of Maryland Baltimore County invites applications for the UMBC Postdoctoral Fellows Program for Faculty Diversity. UMBC is dedicated to ensuring a diverse, scholarly environment and encouraging outstanding individuals to enter the academic profession.  The purpose of the Program is to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars for possible tenure track appointments at UMBC. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the professoriate.

UMBC will appoint recent recipients of the Ph.D. as Postdoctoral Fellows for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2017.  The fellow will receive a starting stipend of $40,000, health benefits, $3,000 for conference travel and preparation of scholarly work, office space with computer, library and other privileges at the university.  During the two-year term of appointment, the fellow will teach one course a year in the host department.  All fellows are expected to be in residence during the academic year and participate in departmental seminars and related activities.  Each fellow will be provided teaching and research mentors and specialized professional development opportunities across the campus. The remainder of the fellow’s time will be devoted to pursuing research.

Successful candidates for the Program will be selected on the basis of scholarly promise and potential to add to the diversity of the UMBC community.  Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree when the term of appointment commences and must be no more than three years beyond receiving the Ph.D.  Individuals awarded a Ph.D. from UMBC or currently holding a postdoctoral or faculty position at UMBC are not eligible.

Fields

Applications for study in any field represented at UMBC are welcome. Please specify up to three fields of interest. Applicants with interdisciplinary research interests will be assigned to more than one department/program.

Stipend

$48,000 a year.

Applicants who will have completed the doctoral degree no later than July 1, 2017 and no earlier than July 1, 2014 are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

The Power of Narrative in the Virtual Public Square is part of a larger project, Baltimore Stories, funded by the NEH, that UMCP, UMBC Dresher Center, UMBC Imaging Research Center (IRC) and the Enoch Pratt are co-sponsoring.  On June 8, Joe Tropea (History M.A. alum) will talk about the documentary he produced and directed with Skizz Cyzkof called "Hit and Stay" about the Catonsville Nine and other draft board actions during the Vietnam War. On June 11, Denise Meringolo, Director of UMBC Public History MA, will be talking about the public digital archive of the April 2015 events that she and many collaborators have developed.

Anyone interested in public scholarship and Baltimore might want to tune in to all of these Baltimore Stories events.

Dr. Bickel and Sherella Cupid are working with a team from the IRC (Lee Boot, Chris Kojzar and Jaclin Paul) on five Baltimore community events as part of this larger project that are focused on culture, stories and arts and their central role in our Baltimore lives and the changing economy of the city and region. These events will be held over the summer and next fall. More information on those will be posted on the LLC group also.
