For 35 years, the Lilly Conferences on College and University Teaching and Learning have been known as exceptional places to present and to learn from faculty colleagues on effective teaching and learning. This interdisciplinary teaching conference includes faculty, administrators, and graduate students from across the United States and abroad. Participants are given the opportunity to exchange ideas, build a repertoire of skills that can be put to immediate use, and to network with colleagues. The overall conference theme for the Lilly Conference series is “Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning.” Each of the Lilly Conferences are unique, but they all share the same great Lilly community spirit!

Science Communication Fellow

The Duke Initiative for Science & Society invites applications for the 2016-2017 Science Communication Fellowship Program. This fellowship is intended for individuals with a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, JD) who are interested in an academic or policy career in science communication.

Science & Society:

The Duke Initiative for Science & Society (“Science & Society”) examines the wide-ranging and integral role of science in social institutions and culture. Science & Society integrates and fosters innovation in related research, education, and engagement at Duke by adopting an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how science and human endeavors intersect with a specific focus on ethical, legal, and social implications for science. The Fellowship:

The Science & Society Fellowship is a residential one-year fellowship, with a possibility for renewal for a second year in limited circumstances. Fellows dedicate approximately two thirds of their time supporting the activities of Science & Society and one third of their time on self-directed research in science communication, education, and/or outreach. Fellows are provided with office space, a competitive stipend, and benefits.

The Application Process:

Applicants should submit a CV, contact information for three references, a writing sample, an explanation of interest and experience in science communication, and a research proposal (in 2,000 words or less) to Mary Jo Smith (mary.jo.smith@duke.edu). The subject line of the email application should read “Application 2016 Science Communication Fellowship Program” and must be received no later than 5 p.m. on March 5, 2016. Fellows will be chosen based on demonstrated academic merit, on likelihood of future success in academia or science communication, and on the strength of their research proposals. Finalists will be notified by April 30, 2016.

The intersection of diversity, learning, and opportunity continues to shape American society and higher education.  The complexities of our history with diversity—in both the distant past and more recently—compel us as educators to engage in difficult, but essential dialogues to identify both institutional and individual barriers that stand in the way of our reaching full and meaningful inclusion in higher education for all students. Those difficult dialogues also must lead to action—specifically, to the dismantling of practices and policies that encourage division and polarization.

AAC&U’s 2016 Diversity, Learning and Student Success conference—“Shifting Paradigms and Challenging Mindsets”—will examine existing paradigms in higher education that serve as catalysts for marginalization and intolerance and impede the exploration and acceptance of difference as a core value in our democratic society and in effective educational environments.  The program will explore the kinds of entrenched attitudes and policies that rest on deficit-minded assumptions about diversity, student learning, and success.  It will engage participants in “courageous conversations” that are problem-oriented and solution-driven—designed to expand our abilities to fully serve and prepare all students for lifelong success and engaged citizenship.

Conference sessions will examine how to incentivize collaborative action and higher levels of interactivity across institutions to advance student success and build democratic capacity.  Participants will be able to use the conference to develop plans for using equity-minded, student-centered learning frameworks as a resource for developing strategic plans and campus-based change agendas. Those attending as part of campus teams also will be able to explore how to develop guided learning pathways and integrated approaches to diversity and student learning focused on problem-based high-impact practices and emerging innovations in digital learning.

SOBWC III was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Ronald Walters, Black America’s leading Political Scientist. November 16–20, 2016, after the U.S. presidential elections, IBW will convene State of the Black World Conference IV in Newark, N.J., dedicated to the memory of the brilliant poet, playwright and political activist Amiri Baraka. This time the Theme of this major domestic and global gathering of people of African descent will be – It’s Nation Time… Again. The State of Emergency still persists in Black America and indeed in the Pan African world, but there have also been dramatic changes over the past four years which will serve as the context for what will be one of the great gatherings of Black people in the 21st century.

The American Council of Learned Societies is pleased to announce the sixth
annual competition of the Public Fellows program. In 2016, ACLS will place
up to 21 recent humanities PhDs in two-year positions at diverse
organizations in government and the nonprofit sector. This career-building
initiative aims to demonstrate that the capacities developed in the

Competitive applicants will have been successful in both academic and
extra-academic  experiences and will aspire to careers in administration,
management, and public service by  choice rather than circumstance.
Applicants must possess US citizenship or permanent resident status and
have a PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences conferred
between January 1, 2013 and June 12, 2016.

Applications will be accepted starting January 14, 2016, through the ACLS
online application  system (OFA). All applications must be received by the

Candidacy (poem)

My mentors—on diversity for human dignity,
I honor you!
My friends—in unity and fraternity,
I love you!
My candidacy, not a rarity
Except a path in scarcity of diversity and solidarity,
A march for leadership for right authority, right priority.
A right community smells equity, responsibility, human dignity.
Your support, your insight, your trust – integrity, fraternity, universal
You have given your sagacity.
Mankind can invest, inquest for water in the sun, in the moon—
Find plenty of it there while unable to find it here on earth the room
And the land of thirsty men, women, children, garden –
Just plan of rascality and adversary toward diversity and human dignity.
May the Lord of lords –his honor, his love cover you all.
May more sagacity come your way without delay
May we all in this hall of celebration of my candidacy—
Pray and say: invest in the success of diversity, equity and human dignity.

Frank Anderson, Cohort 18, has been recently featured on a CBS report. The piece is on the announcement of the $1.6 million partnership between UMBC, Baltimore Public Schools, and the Northrop Group Foundation to boost initiatives inside three Baltimore schools. Frank works with the Choice program, a community-based, family-centered case management approach to delinquency prevention and youth development.

The report includes Jamal Karim, a Choice youth, talking about his sound recording presentation with Anna Rubin (Music department) at the recent IA conference in Baltimore. Also LLC student Rehana Shafi (Cohort 14), who directs the Sherman Scholars Program, is quoted in the written article.
