Family Strengthening Scholars

The full announcement for “Family Strengthening Scholars” is available online at: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/grants/open/foa/view/HHS-2015-ACF-OPRE-PD-0977. OPRE intends to award up to three grants to support dissertation research on healthy marriage/responsible fatherhood policy issues (HMRF).  These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to focus research on questions that have direct implications for HMRF policy decision-making and program administration, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. These grants are intended to address issues of significance to inform policy decisions and solutions, particularly for underserved/understudied populations (e.g., low-income families, minority populations), utilize rigorous research methodology (both primary data collection and secondary data analysis), and help inform the development of future intervention research. Applicants may apply for project periods up to 24 months with two 12-month budget periods.  Up to $25,000 may be awarded for each budget period.  Letters of intent are due by May 8, 2015 and applications are due by June 8, 2015.

Introducing new updates to the GradSense Website

As part of the “Enhancing Student Financial Education” Best Practice project, CGS project staff have been working to enhance the GradSense website by responding to suggestions made by graduate students on site visits to 15 research partner universities. We want to draw your attention to the newly created Budget Calculator in the new Cost of Living section. This tool is designed with students in mind and allows them to view possible budgeting scenarios. Students enter their available funds, monthly and one-time expenses, and then receive an output of where they stand financially along with helpful budgeting advice. The addition of this tool will help graduate and undergraduate students make wise financial decisions that will support their long term academic and professional career goals.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is excited to announce a connected learning course on Community-Engaged Research (CEnR) offered this summer.

The course will explore how CEnR is an approach to research that values the expertise of diverse stakeholders. We will learn how to identify these talented partners and involve them in designing and conducting good research. We will uncover the ideas and techniques of CEnR together through connected learning and social media. We will demonstrate that connected learning - like CEnR - promotes genuine engagement in learning and research through openness and collaborative curiosity.

During her early afternoon session (1:00 PM - 2:00 PM), Dr. Volkow's talk focused on STEM diversity and being a woman in STEM. 

Dr. Nora Volkow opened the discussion to current graduate students and postdoctorate fellows, asking what aspects would draw in diversity in the STEM fields. When the audience responded, a few suggestions were made, which included early exposure to opportunities and real-life applications, financial support, and protection of early-stage principal investigators. Another suggestion brought up was to provide partnerships between universities, which would allow shared resources and an increase in networking with others. 

After discussing about STEM diversity, Dr. Volkow began speaking about how being a woman in the life sciences is challenging. She said, "Women have children and responsibilities. That becomes a major priority, which puts women at a disadvantage." She says it would be nice if women were provided extra time for certain tasks to compensate for the time spent on other responsibilities. She also mentioned that culture is another critical factor as well; culture impacts the behavioral differences between men and women. 

When Dr. Volkow was asked about challenges that she has faced, she said, "Prejudice and jealousy. Prejudice because you look differently and work differently. I was brought up in Mexico. Whether you are born here or not should not matter, but it's something you need to overcome. If you have a unique way of looking at something, it makes it harder because people would try to interfere with it. Just come to see that is how things are and you have to persevere. Trust your instincts. Don't loose confidence in yourself. You are unique." 

Dr. Volkow was later asked about how she is able to manage her responsibilities. She said, "You have to find something that you are interested in. When you love something so much, you devote yourself to it. When you do something, you need to make sure, you are you." Overall, Dr. Volkow gives advice that it is important to be genuinely interested in the job position that you hold. She said that she is over-driven by work, and, it is her passion that acts as her driving force. 

Overall, we would like to thank Dr. Volkow for visiting our campus and for speaking with the UMBC community. At the end of the session, Dr. Volkow mentioned about connecting with both the PROMISE AGEP program and the Meyerhoff program to arrange possible trips for students to visit the NIDA facility.

Celebrating 20 Years of JCET Climate Research

 

Climate affects all residents of the Earth but we all have different perspectives and ways of talking about it.

The UMBC Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology and the UMBC Sustainability Working Group invite the campus community to a symposium focused on communicating the results of scientific climate investigations.  A panel of noted climate researchers will contribute their knowledge of Earth’s climate a discussion prompted by questions from the broader UMBC audience.  This Communicating Climate symposium also celebrates the integration of art and science with renowned musician and composer Kenji Williams who will perform the multi-media presentation,  “Beautiful Earth.”

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This is my third year at UMBC.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Student, friend, leader, engineer, retriever

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I most enjoy the potential to interact with so many different people at UMBC. I see incoming students as a Student Ambassador, as well as current students in classes, clubs, and around campus. No matter what someone is interested in or here to accomplish, everyone is friendly and open to meeting new people.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I have learned the importance of being independent and responsible, but also knowing that help is available. Coming to college is a big change, both in living away from home and school becoming more of a challenge. All students have to learn and be responsible for themselves, but at UMBC there is always help available. Resources from health needs to study needs are available to help us succeed and thrive in our college years.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: I worked alongside ten other coaches, both students and faculty, at the STRiVE Leadership Retreat in 2015. In the winter of 2013 I attended the retreat as a participant and it changed my perspectives and pointed me in the direction I wanted to go as a leader. I realized my strengths and that I really could make a difference. Going again as a coach gave me the opportunity to pass my knowledge, support, and experiences to fellow students so that they too can facilitate change on our campus and in the community as a whole.

A: Music, laughing, friends, playing outside, and reading.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: Don't be afraid to branch out. You never know what kinds of connections you might make. My closest friends here were made through little details in housing, twins, and who happened to meet who at orientation and move-in day. Now I have lifelong friends and so many good memories. Join some clubs or study groups, attend campus events and sports events; there are so many awesome people here at UMBC you haven't met yet. Also, make time to have some fun. College is stressful and busy, but it will be so much better if you take time to be with friends, have some fun, and make some lasting memories.

"Worthy of Consideration" Graduate School Associate Dean, Professor, Poet, & Writer The Graduate School at UMBC congratulates our Associate Dean, Dr. Robert Deluty on the publication of his 48th book! The book, "Worthy of Consideration," is a collection of short poems. In addition to being our Associate Dean, Dr. Deluty is a member of the faculty in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Deluty is a beloved member of the graduate community; he connects regularly with graduate students through the "Poetry and Sushi" readings sponsored by UMBC's Graduate Students Association, and other programs. Some of these programs include his participation as the featured speaker at annual PROMISE seminars  such as  the "Understanding Feelings of Stress" coffee hour held each December, and the "Life/Work Balance" lunch held each August.

Shirley Basfield Dunlap, coordinator of Theatre Arts at Morgan State University and LLC doctoral student, is currently directing the stage play Reparations. The play's opening night will be on Friday 10th at 7:30 pm, and it will have a limited run at Morgan State University (see dates below).

This is a description of the stage play:

Theatre Morgan presents REPARATIONS
Script and music by Joseph Edwards; Directed by Shirley Basfield Dunlap

A successful lawyer takes a case defending an insurance provider whose ancestor company insured enslaved Africans. He encounters an Ancient Ancestor Spirit with a mission to redirect his lost soul. But, what happens when divine intervention meets denial and arrogance?

The goal of creating Reparations is to use the arts to create dialogue around reparations and reconciliation in an engaging, entertaining and authentic way. The story, the music, the dance are sure to be a bold theatrical experience. Theatre Morgan dedicates the production of Reparations the late Dr. Homer E. Favor who established programs in what is now the School of Architecture and Planning, the Institute for Urban Research, the Center for Entrepreneurship and Strategy, the School of Education and Urban Studies, and the Department of Transportation.
