Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: UMBC is a diverse and focused community. Communication is the one of the best keys in life. To enhance your UMBC experience, one needs to interact with different students and faculties outside of a classroom setting. Always experience and explore your life to find out what the real world has in store for you.

A: There's not just one story on campus for me. All my experiences are like a roller coaster. It has its up and downs. Sometimes you close your eyes and hold on in sheer terror. Other times, you just have to raise your hands up in the air to enjoy the ride. It's your choice to either scream or enjoy the ride. However, in the end, you'll want to remember all those captured memories.

Major: History, Ancient Studies, and Secondary Education
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am the current Desk Manager of Potomac Hall, and the Vice President of Programming for (seb).
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I help students have a better experience at UMBC!
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love working with people. In both of my positions, I get to work with some of the most talented individuals I have ever met. Residential Life is a lot harder than it looks, and the workers who are there put their heart and soul into their position. My desk staff this year have all been amazing and they are great at what they do! (seb) also has a great group of workers who get to put their passion for the school into everything that they do. The planning that goes on takes a lot of work, and the people who work on (seb) are some of the hardest working people that I know.
And not only do I get to work with the hardest working people ever on this campus (seriously. They really are the hardest working), I get to help other students create a new college experience as great as my own. Transferring in here a few years ago was hard until I got involved with (seb). Being involved on campus has been an amazing experience, and has allowed me to have my own college family.
So if you are trying to find your niche, come to the student orgs space. Go to the Student Involvement Center. Come to Involvement Fest. You will find where you belong, and you will be forever changed because of it.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: The most important thing that I have learned at UMBC is that you need to do what you need to do for you. It is not about making the most popular decision sometimes, or the one that helps someone else out. I am not saying to take other people's opinions lightly, but you need to do what you need to do to make yourself happy. So if that means changing your major, change it. If that means getting involved in a club that none of your friends are in, go for it. You need to make yourself happy in your college experience, and make it your own!

A: Playing music, reading, watching Netflix, sweatpants, and chocolate. Everyone loves chocolate. AND UMBC!!!!!!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Free food is everywhere. And it really isn't that hard to find. Lots of student events give out free food, and it's usually really good. (Breakfast and Bingo is every other week, and it's free breakfast. 100% free).
Also, while I may not have been here for 4 years because of transferring, this school has been my home for the past 3 years. Thank you to everyone who made it feel like home! Shoutouts to (seb) and Potomac Hall!!!!!!!

College Meta

So here we are, together for now in this time and place. But a break is coming: a conclusion and a commencement, and there will be comings and goings. We will not be the same.
The 25th anniversary of my own college graduation is just ahead. 25 years. But that there-and-then world is with me here and now, just as today will remain with you decades hence. I wouldn't have believed it then, but now I know: The biggest misconception under the sun is that college is merely a trial run at life, and not life itself. The truth is, today counts. We're all really here. This is actually us.
I made choices, back then. After I was elected Student Body President, I chose to humiliate my opponent when he came asking for a position in the student government. I still think about that moment, and my gradual process of recognizing how mean and petty I had been, whenever I'm feeling bitter and tempted to lash out too quickly. A year later, after my good friend was elected President and then disqualified (wrongly, in my view) after the fact, I stood by him through weeks of conflict and chaos. I still draw strength from the memory of our fortitude, but also from the years of subsequent learning and reflection that helped me gain perspective on the motives and roles of everyone else involved in that fight.
I'm pointing this out because I know how college can feel like a big exercise. You can feel like instead of learning, getting involved, leading and making a difference, you're "learning," "getting involved," "leading" and "making a difference," like you're just writing out lines on your future resume. But that's a problematic way to think, and a danger to your happiness and health. If you slip into believing that college is just a game, then you may experience all your life as a kind of game, always identifying as an avatar and not as a whole person.
President Hrabowski says you should watch your thoughts, for they become your words; your words, for they become your actions; your actions, for they become your habits; your habits, for they become your character; and your character, for it becomes your destiny. 25 years from now, you'll know how right he is. Meanwhile, let's keep it real, be kind, and make the most of each other, because this is life, and we are all we have.

Name: Caitlin Bozman
Hometown: Bowie
Major: I'm a double major in Sociology and Political Science.
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I'm a second semester junior here at UMBC.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I have been a plaintiff attorney on the UMBC Mock Trial team for the past two years. I'm also the Marketing Coordinator at a small architecture firm in downtown Baltimore (a job I got through UMBCworks). Next year, I'm excited to live on campus for the first time since my freshman year as a Walker Avenue Resident Assistant.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I do my best to make people smile whenever I can :)
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love that the UMBC community is small enough that you don't feel intimidated trying to be a part of it. It's so nice to be able to run into friends frequently on campus and just spontaneously get lunch or coffee or even adventure off campus. There are so many friendly and really interesting people at UMBC! That's part of what makes it so much fun to be a student here.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I've learned that your college experience isn't determined by which college you go to but rather how involved you are. Student organizations and elective classes really are a great way to explore your interests and meet people who also share your interests. UMBC can be so much more than the place you go for your classes, but you have to be proactive in making sure that happens!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Well it's not actually on campus... but if you take Hilltop Road into campus on a winter night, you can see the entire Baltimore skyline as hundreds of tiny little lights. Sometimes it's nice to see that reminder of Baltimore City since the campus location has such a suburban feel to it.

2013 SGA Election Results

3,532 students (or 32.2% of the undergraduate population) voted in this year's SGA election, the largest turnout in UMBC history (previous record: last year's 3,216 votes). Congratulations to all the newly elected leaders (in bold) and all of the students who had the courage to run. The new officers will be inaugurated at a public ceremony on Monday, May 13 at noon on The Quad.

Major: INCC (Intercultural Communication)
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Aside from being a full time graduate student I am also a member of the UMBC's Chess Team. My position at UMBC would be Treasurer of the Chess Club, but I have been involved much more in creating events and ads to raise the awareness of UMBC's Chess Team on campus and in our community. Together with Joel DeWyer and Tim Bubb, we have created 3 awesome ads that have been running on the inet screens in the passed 2 months. Hope everyone enjoyed them! Aside from my involvement with the chess team I am a member of US Women's Olympic Team.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Let people know the importance of interculturality, but also promote the benefits of chess.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: What I like the most about UMBC is its diversity, focus on education and high involvement with the community. I am really happy to have met so many people who are closely working with the community on and off campus.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I learned so many things, that I don't know with which one to start...First of all, UMBC has given me the opportunity to come to the US and receive a great education. It is a pleasure and a honor to be a Retriever and I am really proud of who I have become in these almost 5 years spent here. I came to UMBC in the Fall of 2008 on a chess scholarship and have graduated with a BA in MLL with concentration in French Language and Literature in May 2012. I have learned many things about different cultures. Although, I hadn't been planning on it, I have decided to pursue my Masters in Intercultural Communication at UMBC. So far it has been a great experience, very challenging, but overall amazing. One does not always realize the differences between different cultures and the challenges some face in another culture; I have learned here on how to deal with cultural challenges, but also how to help others deal with some of theirs. In addition, I have met amazing people at UMBC and created friendships that I believe will last a lifetime!

SGA Election Live! (Photos & Link to Vote)

The 2013 SGA election is underway! Undergraduates can cast their votes here until Wednesday night at midnight.
Three of the last four UMBC SGA elections have been record-setters (the record now stands at 3,216 votes cast; see last year's announcement of the results here). Turnout in UMBC's SGA election has exceeded the turnout at College Park and Towson as a percentage of the student body five years in a row. The candidates have made their plans and are asking for your vote. Read about them and make your choice.

Real People Profiles: Alonté Cross
We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Alonté Cross
Hometown: I'm from Fort Washington, MD but recently moved to Laurel, MD
Major: I'm currently a Media and Communication Studies major but I'm submitting a portfolio to be a Visual Arts major.
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my second semester at UMBC. (I transferred from Regent University).
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am an Office Assistant and Veteran Diversity Educator Intern for the Office of Student Life's Mosaic Center for Culture and Diversity; President of the Community Action Board in Patapsco Hall, Member of the Leadership Advisory Committee; Photographer for The Retriever Weekly (Features Section), and I will be a Resident Assistant in Patapsco Hall starting in the Fall of 2013.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I'm a dedicated student leader, student staff member, & friend to the community.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love that my roles on campus are like plants that help each other grow. Being a dedicated student leader is essentially what helped me to become a student staff member. Being both a student leader and student staff member puts me in the path of more students than just going to class and going to my dorm ever could. That translates to a great deal of thriving friendships and unshakable bonds with others.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Again, I transferred to this school and before ever attending a class or moving into my residence hall, I learned that UMBC has so many opportunities to get involved and make a difference in the community at our disposal, but we have to go after them.
I was hired as a Diversity Educator Intern a few weeks after I officially enrolled here, I was hired at The Retriever Weekly a week after that, all before ever experiencing campus life at the school.
Everything that I've joined or gotten involved in led to my involvement in the next thing, like a ladder. If I can do that as a new student, I challenge students that have been here for a little while, yearning to get involved to just go for it.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: If you read that I work in the Mosaic Center and asked yourself, "What is the Mosaic Center?," this is for you: COME TO THE MOSAIC CENTER! It's not just a reservable space (for meetings, programs, etc.) but when not in use, it's an open space, to enjoy lunch, a nap and/or learn about our events and resources. I bet $1 you didn't know that!
The center is located in The Commons on the second floor, between the Student Involvement Center and the Student Orgs Space (near the Game Room).

PROMISE students celebrate new UMES President, Dr. Juliette Bell, on UMES’ campus
Our PROMISE AGEP is in the “PROMISE Pathways” phase where we have been looking at ways to expand our program and partner with more campuses within the University System of Maryland (USM). On Tuesday, April 16, 2013, a group of PROMISE students left UMBC at 5AM to travel to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to serve as moderators for the 2013 Regional Research Symposium which was part of the celebration activities for the new president, Dr. Juliette Bell. Dr. Bell, a biochemist, spent time meeting and greeting the group from UMBC. Dr. Bell’s own mentor from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/National Institutes of Health (NIEHS/NIH), Dr. Thomas Kunkel, gave a keynote address that discussed innovations in DNA repair.

Students also had a chance to talk with Dr. T. Sean Vasaitis, an assistant professor at UMES, and former PROMISE Peer Mentor from UMB. We extend thanks to Dr. Jennifer Keane-Dawes, Dean of the Graduate School at UMES for her invitation and hospitality, and we thank Dr. Lakeisha L. Harris, for her logistics leadership. Congratulations to all of the poster and oral presentation winners, and to the faculty who won special awards.
