Dissertation House WEEKEND at UMBC: 26 hours!! Fri. Feb. 3 – Sun. Feb. 5
Due to popular demand, and thanks to the hard work of PROMISE Staff’s Natasha Ramoutar and UMBC’s Mr. W. Archer in Event Planning, there are rooms for the “Dissertation House” at UMBC for nearly 3 full days this weekend!
Friday, Feb. 3: 8:30 AM – 1 PM (Commons 328), 1PM – 6PM (Commons 332)
Saturday, Feb. 4: 8:30 AM – 8:00 PM (Commons 329)
Sunday, Feb. 5: 12 noon – 8:00 PM (Commons 327)
These sessions are limited to graduate students who have participated in a 4-day DH session with Dr. Wendy Carter-Veale in the past, e.g. Jan. 2012, August 2011 (12 hour DH Marathon at the Sheraton Columbia), Sept. 2011 (Employees), July 2011, Jan. 2011, etc. Be sure to check the 3rd floor monitors and signs near the elevators in the Commons on the designated days in case there are last minute changes. Don’t forget to blog in. You’ll be joined virtually by your colleagues from other schools. Three cheers for an upcoming productive weekend!

Real People Profiles: Sarah Khalife
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Hometown: Larnaca, Cyprus
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my 4th semester already...!
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am a Commuter Assistant for Off Campus Student Services! :)
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Encouraging students to get involved and to take advantage of their resources!
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: What I could simply say is that I really enjoy planning and working fun and friendly events... However, there are two things I enjoy the most. Every Tuesday morning, we have Good Morning Commuters (GMC) where we serve breakfast on Main Street for anyone who has a Gold Card (from commuters and residents to staff/faculty!) We play music, talk, eat, and try to brighten up everyone's Tuesday morning! I just love the atmosphere that's created by not only the GMC team but also the people who attend! It's so relaxing and kind of cute!
In addition to GMC, on one Friday every month, we have Commuter Connections. My coworker, Josie and I organize interesting, informative, playful, exciting, thoughtful, and enjoyable activities with a focus on commuters getting more connected with campus and the community. Planning and preparing for our events can sometimes get stressful, but with a little help here and there, with the collaboration of an awesome team, and with student participation, an event can be described as successful! My favorite part is at the end of the event after clean up when I go back to the office and I get the feeling of accomplishment. I basically love my job :)!
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: The most important thing I've learned is that you should be open minded and always be willing to meet new people. You might make new friends, or you might meet your future business partners. Don't stop there... go talk to your professors, or go to info sessions and meet some employers. A new person might open the door to so many other possibilities that you could have or maybe to experiences you otherwise would not have. You should keep an open mind and just learn from the people who are surrounding you! It opens up opportunities for you and allows you to see what is going on in the world around you. Plus, its fun most of the time!
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Summertime, traveling, meeting new people, and being busy! AND food. I like trying new and different types of food!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Well, one day - I think it was during my first semester or a little before school start that August - I googled UMBC and clicked on Google Earth. I realized that there was something behind the Fine Arts building, so I went for a little walk and checked it out. It ended up being a small Colosseum between the wings of the building! I just thought that was so intriguing, random, and a unique thing to have on campus!

Lessons from a Snowball to the Face
When I was 6 or 7 years old, my family spent a weekend at Big Bear Lake, about 120 miles from our home in suburban Los Angeles. It was the middle of winter, and the trip was one of one of those we warm climate-dwellers would describe as "going to the snow." My aunt and uncle's family made the trip as well, and I spent a lot of time with my cousins playing in all that strange, cold, white stuff on the ground.
At one point my uncle playfully threw a snowball at me, not realizing it contained a chunk of ice. The blow split my lip, and I started to bleed, and to cry like crazy. As we trudged back to our lodge for some disinfectant and a bandage, my uncle said, "David, I'm very impressed with how you're handling this. If it were [his daughter, my cousin], she'd be doing a lot more yelling and crying."
I stopped crying instantly, and my mind began to turn over the idea that I could show bravery by holding back my tears, and that this was (apparently) a good thing.
Obviously I wasn't the only male child being taught that lesson, and my uncle's undoubtedly well-meaning comment was far from its only source in my life. My later tendency as a young adult to suppress negative emotions, which led to bouts of anxiety and depression, could hardly be traced back to one grown-up's encouraging remark on a snow-covered mountain.
But over the years, when I've occasionally replayed the scene in my mind, I've reflected on the power of positive feedback from an authoritative source. To the extent that I was already brave, I wanted only to be more so. And to the extent that I suspected I was not brave at all, and experienced my uncle's remark as an undeserved compliment, I wanted only to avoid the humiliation of failing to live up to his expectation.
In my role at UMBC I'm in a position to provide encouraging feedback a lot, and the snowball incident contributes to the sense of responsibility I feel whenever I do. I want to help people recognize what is most favorable and true about themselves. But I never want to distort their sense of themselves, or make them feel beholden to me, by suggesting that they need to fulfill my expectation about their reactions and behavior.

Spring Involvement Fest Featuring Elvis
Whether you come for the free food or the chance to explore and connect with 170 of UMBC's student organizations and departments, The Commons is the place to be on Wednesday (2/1) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be lots of free performances and demonstrations, and an opportunity to make (free) screen print t-shirts. Rumor has it that Elvis Presley himself heard about the event's '50's/doo-wop theme and will be on hand to belt out some tunes and pose for photos.
The Twitter hashtag for Involvement Fest is: #UMBCIFest.
