Existential Literacy talk by Dr. David Balosa--LLC Cohort 14

David Balosa, Ph.D., is participating in an on-line workshop in advance of the publication of the volume, Critical Pedagogy for Modern Language Education. This book will be published by Bloomsbury later in 2022.

His talk and book chapter is entitled, Existential Literacy: Promoting the Culture of the Dignity of all Languages in Modern Language Classrooms

This chapter explains how critical pedagogy in modern languages classrooms should encapsulate the approach that Dr. Balosa calls existential literacy to achieve "transformational interculturality" and "global intercultural citizenship." It explores his experience in teaching French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Swahili (K-16) in Philadelphia and Delaware State University and his experience as a member of the School District of Philadelphia equity and diversity team and Teacher Leader of the Junior Academy in South Philadelphia High School.

He defines existential literacy as an approach to pedagogical practices from which to derive inclusive attitudes, competence, and open-mindedness in the acquisition of, appreciation and respect for, and interest in linguistic, cultural, and sociopolitical discursive diversity. These objectives embody the commitment to transformational interculturality and global intercultural citizenship. Transformational interculturality refers to models of leadership and sociopolitical movements dedicated to rights and privileges rooted in human rights and responsibilities for inclusiveness, equity, and diversity for the common good. Global intercultural citizenship entails more humane relationships among different groups of people. It refers to symbolic capital from which derives an inclusive mindset in politics or the management of relationships among different groups of people across the world.

On behalf of the University Steering Committee, we are writing to ask you to save Thursday, April 7 on your calendar for a Community Mental Health Action day. For now, we are writing to ask three things:

Please help make this day happen! Alternatively, if you’re already programming an event that we can help advertise, let us know.

Please consider building this day into your syllabi and plans for the work day, perhaps with an assignment or readings that reflect the theme through the lens of your field, or perhaps with a study day to allow folks to participate throughout the day.

NCI-Frederick Post Doctoral Openings Available

<Tagline>Protein Chemistry and Molecular Biology Section (PCMBS)</Tagline>

he Molecular Targets Program (MTP) of the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Cancer Research (NCI’s CCR) has postdoctoral positions available in its Protein Chemistry and Molecular Biology Section (PCMBS). The PCMBS uses its expertise in protein chemistry, biophysics, enzymology, molecular biology and screening to adapt CCR basic science laboratory findings into high throughput, cell-free screens for the interrogation of pure compound and pre-fractionated natural product libraries. In addition, we use these same skills to discover and characterize novel bioactive proteins from natural product extracts that increase our knowledge of protein structure and function, address diseases and molecular targets of interest, and potentially lead to clinical development.

The position is for a researcher with published expertise in enzyme kinetics and in-vitro inhibitor/activator mechanism of action studies to develop and implement high-throughput assays for the discovery of biologically active synthetic and natural product-derived compounds. Applicants should highlight their experience in relevant methods of in-vitro enzymology in their introductory email. Previous experience in high throughput screening or natural products discovery is not required but will be prioritized in candidate evaluation.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell/molecular biology, pharmacognosy or a related discipline from an accredited research institution within the last three years. The fellowship duration is for a maximum of 5 years based on performance and yearly evaluations. The fellowship is not restricted to U.S. citizens. The fellowship stipend starts at a flat rare per annum and is determined based on qualifications and years of relevant experience. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV with bibliography, and three letters of reference to MTP_PostDoc@nih.gov.

To Apply:

More information about the Molecular Targets Program is available here: https://ccr.cancer.gov/molecular-targets-program.

FICA Tax Withholding issues

<Tagline>***Repost from HR/Payroll***</Tagline>

MESSAGE FROM CENTRAL PAYEROLL BUREAU

2022 FICA Tax Withholding (PPE 01/01/22)

Through a post-audit process, Central Payroll Bureau (CPB) learned that highly compensated employees’ January 7th paychecks had FICA tax withholding amounts that were less than they should have been. CPB discovered that a glitch in its system prevented the full FICA tax amount from being withheld. FICA taxes are calculated based on Social Security wage limits. For tax year 2021, the limit was $142,800. For tax year 2022, the limit is $147,000. Our system captured 2021’s YTD Social Security wage balance and only calculated Social Security taxes on $4,200 which is the difference between the 2 years.

Please note that this issue has been fixed. In PPE 01/15/22 (pay date 01/21/22), impacted employees will see an increase in their FICA taxes to collect all FICA tax shortfalls that were missed in the previous pay. In PPE 01/29/22 (pay date 02/04/22), impacted employees will see their correct FICA tax withholdings. Employees and agencies do not need to do anything to correct PPE 01/01/22 because FICA taxes will self-adjust through their paychecks dated 01/21/22.

If you have any questions, please contact our CPB Accounting Team via email CPBACCTG@marylandtaxes.gov or phone (410) 260-7964.
