GSO Fall Update

<Tagline>Info regarding changes that affect event planning & funding</Tagline>

Hello GSOs,

Please read the below information in regards to reminders, updates and new changes that will affect event planning and the submission of funding requests.

The Graduate School and GSA want to make it clear that event planning for the entire year still requires significant pre-planning due to the space and safety requirements of COVID.

Reserving space on campus has become extremely limited and there is currently a 14 day hold for reserving space. Please make sure that you are planning ahead of time for both Fall and Spring events

Please refer to the university guidelines on hosting events linkedhere. Specifically, if you are planning on having more than 50 people for an in-person event, you must discuss it with your Vice President or Dean.

The Grants Review Panel is requesting that GSOs submit allocation requests forms at least 2 weeks in advance. The committee needs sufficient time to look over and discuss the request prior to approving it

Effective Spring Semester 2022: All allocation requests must be submitted at least one month in advance in order to be considered for funding. The Executive Council made this decision based on this semester’s requests and the new update can be found here.

If you are requesting food from on campus providers, please make sure you are giving them ample time to prepare an order. Many of the caterers are requesting at least a week notice, but it is always better to request earlier

These are the approved methods currently for on campus food services:

Individually wrapped, pre-packaged snack items

Individually prepared, boxed meal options provided by one of the approved caterers

Sit down catered meal prepared by and served by an approved caterer

Pizza is allowed as long as there are designated servers that are masked and gloved.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of these updates, please reach out to gsa@umbc.edu

NSF Mid-Career Advancement (MCA)

<Tagline>***featured external grant opportunity***</Tagline>

NSF Mid-Career Advancement (MCA)

Full Proposal Due Date: February 7, 2022

An academic career often does not provide the uninterrupted stretches of time necessary for acquiring and building new skills to enhance and advance one’s research program. Mid-career scientists in particular are at a critical career stage where they need to advance their research programs to ensure long-term productivity and creativity but are often constrained by service, teaching, or other activities that limit the amount of time devoted to research.

The MCA offers an opportunity for scientists and engineers at the Associate Professor rank (or equivalent) to substantively enhance and advance their research program through synergistic and mutually beneficial partnerships, typically at an institution other than their home institution. Projects that envision new insights on existing problems or identify new but related problems previously inaccessible without new methodology or expertise from other fields are encouraged.

Partners from outside the PI's own subdiscipline or discipline are encouraged, but not required, to enhance interdisciplinary networking and convergence across science and engineering fields.

By (re)-investing in mid-career investigators, NSF aims to enable and grow a more diverse scientific workforce (more women, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities) at high academic ranks, who remain engaged and active in cutting-edge research.

The MCA is the only cross-directorate NSF program specifically aimed at providing protected time and resources to established scientists and engineers targeted at the mid-career (Associate Professor rank or equivalent) stage. Participating programs in the Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO), Geosciences (GEO), Engineering (ENG), Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), and Education and Human Resources (EHR) will accept MCA proposals. PIs are encouraged to discuss the suitability of their MCA proposal with a program officer from the appropriate directorate (see https://www.nsf.gov/bio/MCA_contacts.jsp).

Despite being a widespread problem in countries in the Global South, the study of disinformation remains dominated by examples, case studies and models from the Global North. Knowledge about the various manifestations of disinformation, the range of responses and success rate of interventions to counter disinformation remains fragmented and partial. In order to gain a better understanding of the knowledge gaps and areas where further research is required, as well as to identify opportunities for inter- and intra-regional cooperation, more research into the types of disinformation, the social factors enabling its spread, and possible contextually relevant interventions in the Global South is needed. This talk will provide an overview of some of these research efforts
