Take part in the first event of Critical Social Justice 2021-2022 and learn more about the disability justice movement. In this virtual event, we will learn about the history of disability rights in the US, the fundamental principles of disability justice, where the movement is today, and what disability justice looks like/can look like at UMBC. Regardless of your knowledge level or experience level, all are welcome to join in on this introductory conversation.

This year, CSJ: Disability Justice + Access Matters invites our campus community to learn from a perspective of disability justice so that we can continue to make space for everybody and every body now and in the future. Learn more about the Critical Social Justice: Disability Justice + Access Matters theme here. For more information about upcoming events or to inquire about collaboration, please email the Women’s Center at womenscenter@umbc.edu.

Radical Roots: Uncovering Histories of a Social Justice in Public History

Historic sites, museums, archives, and monuments are neither neutral nor objective. Many were established to strengthen tradition, reinforce the cultural authority of elites, and inhibit change. Today, these sites have become the focal point of protest, symbols in a larger fight for inclusiveness and equality. In this talk, Dr. Denise Meringolo identifies different, less well-documented forms of public history practice, drawing attention to individuals who understood collecting, preserving, analyzing, and interpreting the past as entirely compatible with –even necessary for—productive political discourse, and embraced the potential of their work to promote social justice.

The Maynard Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to collaborate on current funded projects. Our research involves the investigation of immunobiological factors that contribute to cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities and underserved populations. We also investigate the role of inflammation-associated P2 purinergic receptors in cancer initiation and aggressiveness . Specifically, projects are aimed at therapeutically targeting P2 purinergic receptors for the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer and characterizing P2 purinergic receptors in pancreatic cancer.

The LeadHERship Problem - Tuesday, September 21st at 12:00pm
This session is about taking a deeper look into the relationship between womxn and leadership. Attendees will learn about how our socialization affects our views regarding our own identity and our capacity to lead. This session will be done online.

The Author of Your Leadership Story - Wednesday, October 20th at 12:00pm
The Author of Your Leadership Story is a leadership workshop that focuses on self-authorship; defining and creating you own individual sense of self, and making yourself as you go on your college journey. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.

Going Farther Together - Thursday, November 18th at 12:00pm
Attendees will learn about the leadership process through team-building and capitalizing on difference. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.

This semester’s Spanish Virtual Film Festival begins next Tuesday, September 21, with the film Los Lobos (Mexico, 2019).  Everyone is invited. 


LLC Alum Dr. Elisabeth Arevalo-Guerrero will introduce the October 5th film, "On This Side of the World" (Spain, 2020) and LLC student Maria Manni will introduce the November 4th film, "The Empty Classroom" (multiple countries, 2015). And there are more award winning and critically acclaimed films in the attached flyer!

As undergraduate and graduate student populations have become more and more diverse, institutions of higher education are getting much more proactive in their goals to hire faculty that are prepared to be mentors, researchers, and teachers who are inclusive and culturally competent (about time, right?). As such, many academic jobs require a Diversity Statement or a Commitment to Diversity Statement. This is a way for applicants to demonstrate they have the commitments and capacities to contribute to the institution’s goals of diversity, inclusion, and equity via their work (personally and professionally) and their lived experiences. 

Come learn more about how to craft these statements, how they are often scored, and ways you can do additional work NOW before the job market to demonstrate the values you have. 

Participation in this event counts towards your CIRTL certification.

Zareen and Ali are dear friends and colleagues of many of us and we know that they work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of people from their country of origin, Afghanistan. Both Zareen and Ali come from an ethnic minority group in Afghanistan, the Hazara, who have been brutally targeted by extremists; Zareen has written extensively on the issue for Ms. Magazine and other outlets.

At the present, Zareen and Ali are working to help bring 8 family members from Pakistan here to Baltimore. These family members have already survived harrowing ordeals to leave Afghanistan. They left Afghanistan with nothing. Zareen and Ali are the main financial supporters of them right now. While Zareen and Ali have been able to get pro-bono legal counsel for these family members, they want to file Humanitarian Parole forms to bring them here to the United states. The fee for each applicant is $575.00. Right now, They need help to cover the fees to file the Humanitarian Parole applications and for them to get visas. Eventually, each of the 8 family members will need a plane ticket to come to Baltimore and some support locally while they get settled and find work. All 8 of the family members are in danger because of their ethnic minority status and several were also being targeted because of aid work they engaged in while in Afghanistan.
