    <p><strong>Baltimore Architecture Foundation and Baltimore Heritage kick off Doors Open Baltimore with Dr. Lawrence Brown, author of </strong><em><strong>The Black Butterfly: The Harmful Politics of Race and Space in America</strong></em><strong>. <br></strong></p>
    <p>Fri, October 1, 2021</p>
    											<p>1:00 PM – 2:30 PM EDT</p>
    <p></p>Dr. Brown will 
    put Baltimore under a microscope, looking at the causes of segregation 
    and drawing on extensive research of data and policy. Brown will 
    demonstrate how data visualization can be a tool to distribute resources
     to communities in need, and speak to the roles of design, planning, and
     preservation in healing and restoring redlined Black neighborhoods.<p>Dr.
     Brown’s presentation will be followed by a discussion and Q&amp;A 
    moderated by author and journalist Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson. 
    Participating discussants include:</p>
    <p>Seema Iyer, Ph.D, Associate Director of the Jacob France Institute, University of Baltimore</p>
    <p>Tom Liebel, FAIA, Vice-President of Moseley Architects and CHAP Commission Chair</p>

<Title>Dresher Center Acting Director 2021-22</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Denise Meringolo is the Acting Director for the Dresher Center for the Humanities for 2021-22. She is also an Associate Professor of History and has been the Director of Public History at UMBC since 2006. She is an expert in community based public history practice and <a href="https://inclusivehistorian.com/civic-engagement/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">civic engagement</a>. Her book <a href="https://ncph.org/history-at-work/ncph-2013-book-award/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Museums, Monuments, and National Parks: Toward a New Genealogy of Public History</em></a> (University of Massachusetts, 2012) won the 2013 National Council on Public History prize for the best book in the field. In 2015, she established a crowd-source digital collection, <a href="https://baltimoreuprising2015.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Preserve the Baltimore Uprising</em></a> in order to gather and protect stories of protest and civil disobedience in Baltimore. In 2018, she won a <a href="https://www.whiting.org/scholars/public-engagement-programs/fellowship" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship </a>which enabled her to activate the collection to promote community-based, collaborative historical reflection and interpretation. Between 2013 and 2021, she designed and facilitated a large <a href="https://ncph.org/history-at-work/tag/radical-roots/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">collaborative research project</a>, Radical Roots: Civic Engagement, Public History, and a Tradition of Social Justice Activism, which will be published as an open source digital collection of essays by Amherst College Press this winter. She is a member of the Governance Committee of the <a href="https://ncph.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Council on Public History</a>.<br><div><br></div>

    <span>We wanted to inform research community of the </span><span>updated</span><span> </span><span>Community</span><span>-</span><span>based</span><span> </span><span>Research</span><span> and Human Subjects </span><span>Research</span><span> Guidelines that are part of the Return to Campus for RCA Activities plan. Ef</span><span>fective today, August 26, 2021, </span><span>on-campus, in-person (put on hold </span><span>due to COVID-19 restrictions) may be conducted on-campus as well as in university human research labs.</span><div><span><br></span></div>

    <span>Please consult the </span><a href="https://research.umbc.edu/covid19/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Return to Campus for RCA Activities</a> <span>webpage for information on university safety guidelines for human research activities.  Investigators whose research was put on hold due to the pandemic or submitted amendment changing to virtual formats were already notified of the steps to take to change back to the on-campus setting. </span>

    <p>The Reach Together Program is seeking 100 motivated and dynamic UMBC community members, with a desire to serve local 2nd - 8th grade students to serve as Math Coaches (tutors).  <br></p>
    <p>The Reach Together Program is a partnership program of the UMBC Sherman Program with Baltimore City Public Schools. Over the past 10 years, UMBC has partnered deeply with Lakeland EMS and additional Baltimore school communities to improve learning outcomes and support students and families through partnership programs. The Reach Together Program builds upon our Math Coach Program, partnering with Arundel Elementary, Cherry Hill Elementary/Middle, Lakeland Elementary/Middle, And Westport Elementary/Middle schools to provide academic acceleration for students through high-dosage tutoring in mathematics.  </p>
    <p><a href="https://forms.gle/zc2v2Sboyf62d5mr8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Become a UMBC Math Coach</a> and work with a small group of students in grades 2nd - 8th on key concepts in math 3 hours each week during the school day at Baltimore City schools beginning in early September - May. Math Coaches will receive pre-service training and on-going support on lesson planning, math content, and maintaining a strong mentor relationship with your students.  Compensation is $18/hour and you can earn a notation on your transcript through the 096 Practicum course through The Shriver Center.<br></p>

    <p><span>CAHSS is continuing our partnership with <a href="https://www.hanoverresearch.com/education-solutions/higher-education/grants-solution/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Hanover Research</a>,</span><span> a grant development and research firm that helps faculty strengthen competitive external proposals to federal agencies and private and non-profit foundations. </span><span>Teams of CAHSS faculty may apply for the opportunity to work directly with Hanover professionals. </span></p>

    <p><strong><em><span>A second round of applications is now open for faculty who intend to submit an external proposal later in Fall 2021 or in spring/early summer 2022</span><span>. </span></em></strong></p>

    <p><span><strong>Selection Criteria: </strong></span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>Preference will be given to teams that aim to submit larger, collaborative and/or interdisciplinary proposals to federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NIH) or to foundations. </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Each team must have at least one CAHSS tenured/tenure track faculty member. </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Faculty with prior collaborative grant experience who are looking to scale up their research are especially encouraged to apply. </span></p></li>
