There are many ways to make a difference at UMBC, especially if you are interested in shaping or changing campus life. Most of them involve hard work, planning and determination. But once in a while students have an opportunity to influence the future of campus life simply by offering their opinions. Next week, some lucky freshman and seniors have that chance, because they will be invited at random by email to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

NSSE is an annual survey administered by UMBC and other colleges and universities across the United States. UMBC's Office of Institutional Research explains that NSSE "gauges the extent to which colleges are providing experiences associated with a quality undergraduate education and the extent to which students are engaging in those educationally meaningful activities." Campus leaders have used the survey results to inform decisions about changes to programs and the curriculum. The Office of Institutional Research says that among the UMBC offerings that have been created in part based on students' responses to NSSE are first-year seminars, living-learning communities, Introduction to an Honors University courses, the new student book experience and the faculty mentor program.

So if you are one of the lucky invitees, please take the survey. And if you want to take the more challenging (but extremely rewarding) approach to campus change, fill out this application to join the 2012-2013 SGA.

Exactly one month from today, I will excitedly put together a list of all the wonderful students at UMBC who have decided to run for SGA office.  Will one of those names be yours?

Today, the SGA Election Board is launching our website – www.umbc.edu/studentvote – as well as a myUMBC group “Elect SGA 2012” to help you decide whether or not to run (hint, the answer is you should!).

Each spring (mark your calendars for April 23-25!), the undergraduate student body at UMBC elects students to 20 positions.  We choose 11 Senators, 5 Finance Board Representatives, a Vice President for Student Organizations, a Treasurer, an Executive Vice President, and a President.  These are the students who allocate our student activity fees, who plan campus initiatives, who advise and support student organizations, who represent our interests, and who work with us to make UMBC ours.

In order to run for SGA office, you have to fill out a candidate application with some basic information about who you are and why you want to run.  Those will be due before Spring Break, on Friday, March 16th.  After Spring Break, campaigns will kick into gear.  Look out for open houses, debates, candidate profiles, and other ways to learn about who's running for office.

In the meantime, check out www.umbc.edu/studentvote!  It's got more information about SGA structure, the positions that are open, eligibility requirements, and more.  We'll keep it up to date with posts about information sessions and deadlines and other great resources for potential candidates.

My personal favorite part of the website is the “Tell Them To Run” tab.  Sometimes we all need a little nudge to put ourselves out there, and running for SGA office is no exception.  “Tell Them To Run” allows students to encourage each other to make a commitment to the UMBC community.  Let someone know that you think they have leadership potential.  Let them know you think they have great ideas.  Let them know you would vote for them.  And tell them they should run!  Fill out the google form, and we'll make sure your message gets to them.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives.  Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues.  But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings.  Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground. 

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: nearly $200,000 this year.  Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions.  These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense.  Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions.  But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.

Through games, activities and reflection, STRiVE participants hone leadership skills, develop campus and social change projects and build networks.  Participants emerge feeling confident, inspired and connected. Participants' ratings of the retreat have been off the charts: 100% of participants say they'd recommend STRiVE to a friend.

STRiVE 2012 will take place from January 9 - 13, 2012, at the Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, Maryland (participants will travel by bus from the UMBC campus). A team of 12 UMBC staff members and student leaders will serve as facilitators for the retreat.

But when he travels to any other campus in the University System of Maryland (something he does almost every week), he's a visiting dignitary: an honored guest with access to top leaders. And along with his colleagues on the University System of Maryland's Board of Regents, on which he serves as the only student representing more than 150,000 others across the state, Collin is a decision-maker whose actions and choices affect us all.

LATTE will take place from Saturday morning, October 22nd through Sunday afternoon, October 23rd at the Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, MD (bus transportation provided from UMBC).  Participation is free.

COORDINATOR FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency, the incumbent will be responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive and dynamic leadership program for students. Specific duties include: working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to offer institutes, retreats, speaker series, intentional curricular and co-curricular leadership offerings; coordinating leadership recognition programs; co-teaching the leadership class; and performing other duties as assigned.

Requires a Master's degree and at least one year of student life job-related experience. Must have: knowledge of college student development principles; a demonstrated commitment to meeting the needs of diverse student populations and student organizations; and the ability to interact effectively with broad campus constituents and campus partners. Excellent organizational and time management abilities; customer service skills; comfort with a high-paced, dynamic work environment; and a strong team player mentality required.
