<Title>Dr. Shirley Basfield Dunlap</Title>

    <span>We write to share the sorrowful news that we have lost one of our
    own LLC alums, Dr. <span>Shirley</span> Basfield Dunlap. Dr. Basfield Dunlap, a member of
    LLC cohort 16, graduated in Spring 2018, with her dissertation, “</span><span>The Oral History Project of African American
    Stage Directors in American Theatre.” </span><span>Drs. Beverly Bickel and Michelle Scott co-chaired her ground-breaking
    dissertation and her committee includedDrs<em>. </em></span><span>Kimberly Moffitt, Robert Morrow (Morgan
    State University) and Ayanna Thompson (Arizona State University). <br></span>

    <span>Dr. Basfield's dissertation presents an oral history of four African American stage directors of American mainstream theatre who are among many who have been undocumented in the annals of American history. Her work highlights how the director's staging of theatrical artwork is a commentary on the experience, ideologies, interpretations and representations of the world of the play. Each</span><em><span></span></em>
    </div>
    <div>
    <span>director brings cultural
    heritage to life through performative art, and contributes another dimension to
    historicizing moments that have not had adequate attention in U.S. theatre
    history. Marjorie Moon of The Billie Holiday Theatre; Clinton Turner Davis of
    the Negro Ensemble Company and co-founder of The Non-Traditional Casting
    Project; Mabel Robinson of the North Carolina Black Repertory Company; and
    Woodie King, Jr. of the New Federal Theatre all represent the intersectionality
    of the lived history of African Americans in theatre as early as the 1960s
    National Black Arts/Theatre Movement. The work is a challenge to the
    discrimination that ensues due to the lack of documentation of African Americans’
    experiences in American theatre history.</span><span> <br></span>
    </div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div><span>Since last summer, Dr. Basfield Dunlap had been conducting additional
    interviews of African American directors in Chicago, Indiana, Texas, New York
    and Washington, D.C. which she planned to include in a book and eventual documentary
    about the significant contributions of African American directors to American
    theatre. In a late April 2020 email exchange, she wrote about how the
    pandemic’s insistence that she stay home and slow down had offered her
    inspiration, hope and time to be able to work on the book. <br></span></div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div>
    <p><span>While completing the final writing of her dissertation, she directed <em>Red Velvet</em>, Lolita Chakrabarti's play about Ira Aldridge, the 19th century Black Shakespearean actor, for the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Describing her work directing <em>Red Velvet</em>, Dr. Basfield Dunlap wrote, "Theatre educates, empowers, and inspires in ways unlike any entertainment field in the world. Telling Aldridge's story is timely and necessary, as we experience concerns in today's entertainment industry all too similar to those he encountered during the 1800s."  <br></span></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span>Dr. Basfield Dunlap expressed her fierce commitment to inclusion through this and many other productions. As a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and an unwavering advocate for the powerful contributions of African American directors to American theatre, Dr. Basfield Dunlap's directing credits are too numerous to list. A sample includes multidisciplinary productions developed and staged in collaboration with Morgan's Theatre, Visual Arts and Music departments and many community members such as <em>Raisin</em>, <em>the Musical; Ragtime</em>, <em>the Musical; Sarafina!; Crowns; The Color Purple; </em>and<em>, The Wiz. </em>A widely respected director in the Baltimore area and well beyond, Dr. Basfield Dunlap was honored with a nomination from Woodie King and Ian Gallanar and offered membership in the prestigious American Theatre Conference in summer 2018. <br></span></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span>When UMBC hosted the national Imagining America conference in collaboration with Morgan State University, Towson University, Maryland Institute of Art and over 50 community organizations, Dr. Basfield Dunlap coordinated three sessions for the conference including a powerful opening session with Morgan students and another keynote session for which she directed a dramatic reading of Langston Hughes' "Let America be America Again." Orgaizers and participants of subsequent Imaging America conferences are still talking about the powerful and beautiful sessions she created and led in 2015. <br></span></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span>Dr. Basfield Dunlap brought diligence, commitment, and generosity to the LLC community where she was beloved for her humor, critical questions, spirituality and creative thought and action. She told us, "Jump...the net will come!" And so, we jumped, knowing that we would learn, laugh and be inspired when Shirley was in the room. She did not need the doctoral degree to pursue African American theater directing and scholarship as she was already the expert when she stepped into the classroom. Yet, she was intent on becoming "Dr." Basfield Dunlap and so she did in record time, mentoring her LLC mentors along the way.</span></p>
    <p><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span> To see her working as a director, attend the magnificent plays she directed, and to know her as a friend and colleague has been a treasured gift. Just as she ended all her emails and encounters, we wish her the "peace and blessings" she so generously shared with everyone she encountered on her journey. Our deepest sympathies and love are with her family and closest friends as we learn to live in a diminished world without Shirley's light. <br></span></p>

    <p>Dear Colleagues </p>
    <p>We are seeking proposals for chapters for possible inclusion in the forthcoming edited volume, “<u>Race, Ethnicity and the Covid-19 Global Pandemic</u>.“ 
     This volume will present the most authoritative and up-to-date theory 
    and research on the causes and consequences of the covid-19 pandemic on 
    racial and ethnic minorities in the U. S. and world.    These original 
    essays will provide a critical examination of the progress and direction
     of debates, as well as a foundation for future research.  Please send 
    your proposed title, abstract (no more than 400 words), name, and 
    affiliation to <a href="mailto:melvin_thomas@ncsu.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">melvin_thomas@ncsu.edu</a> by July 30, 2020.</p>
    <p> </p>
    <p>We are particularly interested in chapters that address the following issues:</p>
    <p> </p>
    <p>1.<span>      </span>Discussions
     that apply social science theories to enhance our understanding of 
    racial disparities in covid-19 infections and deaths in the U.S. and/or 
    globally.</p>
    <p>2.<span>      </span>Multivariate analyses of the racial disparities.</p>
    <p>3.<span>      </span>Cross-national studies of the covid-19 pandemic and how it impacts racial, ethnic or religious minorities.</p>
    <p>4.<span>      </span>Qualitative studies of how racial and ethnic minorities deal with covid-19 related issues.</p>
    <p>5.<span>      </span>Historical analyses of pandemics and their impact on racial and ethnic minorities.</p>
    <p>6.<span>      </span>Analyses that link racism in the U.S. healthcare system to covid-19 deaths.</p>
    <p>7.<span>      </span>Analyses
     that provide solutions to racial and ethnic disparities linked to 
    disparate covid-19 infections and deaths that can be that can used to 
    mitigate the impact of future pandemics.</p>

<Title>Standing against structural racism and for racial justice</Title>

<Title>Dresher Center Statement on Anti-Black Racism</Title>

                    <p>The Dresher Center for the 
    Humanities stands in solidarity with members of our Black community and 
    other communities suffering across the nation. We mourn and condemn the 
    murder of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many 
    others. We recognize the injustice of a system of mass incarceration 
    rooted in white supremacy under which Black and Brown women and men, 
    including queer and trans people, are unduly subject to violence. We 
    rededicate ourselves at this time to calling out and taking action to 
    oppose white supremacy and the powerful systems of racial injustice that
     remain at work in the United States, including in institutions of 
    higher education. We will use our platform, programming, and voices to 
    bring the tools of the humanities to work against racism and for social 
    justice.</p>
    <p>To start, we offer the following list of resources for work against 
    anti-Black racism. While not definitive, it is our hope that this list 
    provides articles, books, podcasts, films, and other media that will be 
    stepping stones towards a wider conversation.</p>

     to consider how can we use our roles as faculty, teachers, 
    chairs/directors, or mentors to work towards racial justice, social 
    change, civic action, community action, and pedagogical engagement.

<Title>Elaine MacDougall and James Wright Receive Crandall Award</Title>
<Tagline>to develop peer-writing-consultant training</Tagline>

    <div>LLC Students Elaine MacDougall and James Wright, both from Cohort 22, have just been awarded the 2020 Jodi Crandall Fellowship for Research in Language, Literacy, and Culture. <br>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>They proposed an interdisciplinary collaborative project for peer 
    writing consultant training to address global and local contexts for learning, 
    encourage peer writing consultants to critically reflect on their 
    positions and identities in light of linguistic and cultural difference;
     consider multiple ways of knowing as professional writers-in-training; 
    question their own and others’ assumptions about difference; and 
    negotiate and problem-solve collaboratively across professions and 
    identities.</div>

    <div><br></div>Their project will include voices of 
    writing center administrators and up to 20 peer writing consultants from
     various universities and high schools across the Baltimore area through
     the already established Baltimore Metro Writing Centers Association. 
    Through this collaboration, they plan to develop a year-long, research-based 
    training series for critically exploring these questions at the 
    secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels through critical 
    reflective practice based in scholarship that encourages peer 
    writing consultants “to engage reflectively [in writing], mapping what they 
    understand” and “to explicate tacit knowledge” embedded in such 
    wide-ranging “intersections of self, experience, and the world.” (Yancey,
     2016)</div>

<Title>Steven Dashiell Successfully Defends his Dissertation!</Title>

    <div>On May 27, 2020 Steven Dashiell of LLC Cohort 16 
    successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of
     Philosophy.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>His virtual 
    defense went very smoothly and he gave an excellent presentation of his 
    dissertation research, "Veteran Identity Construction and Performance: The Case of Student Veterans." </div>

<Title>IMPORTANT:  Faculty Working Groups deadline is May 30th!</Title>

    <p>The Center for Social Science Scholarship invites applications for Faculty Working Groups to promote intellectual exchange in the social sciences and across campus. These collaborative scholarly learning communities will meet regularly to engage in such activities as: working on research projects, reading key literature, exploring new methodological approaches, and/or engaging in matters of public interest related to the social sciences.</p>
    <p>Up to four Faculty Working Groups will be selected by the center director and advisory board members. Groups should be faculty-led and must include at least one faculty member from a social science department at UMBC. Additional priority will be given to groups whose members and/or areas of interest are multi- or interdisciplinary. Advanced graduate students may participate as Faculty Working Group members but may not serve as leaders.</p>
    <p>Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester); groups will also be able to apply for continuation funding. Groups may use funds for such items as: supporting regular group meetings; purchasing software, books, or other materials; hosting external speakers; creating scholarly resources; traveling to external sites for research or public engagement purposes; and other similar activities. A brief report of the group’s activities will be due at the end of the funding period.</p>
    <p><strong>Apply by May 30, 2020,</strong> for groups to begin in Fall 2020.</p>
