Students are welcome to respond in a multitude of ways, whether through a video and/or audio essay, photographs, mixed media, prose, or a combination of these. We are at an unprecedented moment in history, and the effect of this crisis on students is particularly acute. Although the journal focuses on issues of media and cities, we invite a range of responses, including, but not limited to, how students are coping with school shutdowns and remote instruction, reflections on experiences of grief and loss, how the pandemic has altered students’ everyday lives and experiences in both public and private spaces, reflections on the “new normal,” imaginations of the kind of spaces, places, cultures, and experiences we would like to build after the pandemic. These are just a few possible ideas, but we welcome students’ to respond in other ways that they see fit. You can check out the Student Voices section of the journal here to get a sense of the kind of work we have published in this section in the past. Students can email their submissions directly to Helen Morgan Parmett at hxmorgan@uvm.edu and Conn Holohan at conn.holohan@nuigalway.ie with the subject line “Pandemic Responses.”

UMBC's 5th Annual ArtRising: @choicevoices on Instagram

<Tagline>Join us for a daylong event on Saturday, April 25!</Tagline>

Dear LLC Family,

This week is the Choice Program at UMBC's 5th Annual ArtRising, taking place virtually @choicevoices on instagram!

The celebration includes daily workshops and activities, both pre-recorded and live, culminating in a daylong event on Saturday, April 25th. Again, it's all @choicevoices, so make sure to follow us, participate, like, and share!!

On the 5th anniversary of the death of Freddie Gray, and always, opportunities for young people and communities to come together and share their voices and talents are imperative. We see ArtRising as a way of countering the discrimination, overpolicing, and adultification too many of our young people face. We see it as a way to directly compensate community artists--11 total for this event--a meaningful act for many during this time of crisis. And we see it as a way to bring all of our communities together, despite being socially distanced. We appreciate everyone's support and commitment to this work so much, and hope to see you online!

At this point the best way to support is through participation and helping to get the word out! Feel free to share, any questions can be directed to me, afrank3@umbc.edu

Thanks,

Frank

Below is a list of activities happening this week! I will send out more information about the day of activities when the final schedule is confirmed.
