<Title>Orientation Advising Opportunities for Grad Students</Title>
<Tagline>Gain valuable experience &amp; a small stipend for summer work!</Tagline>

    <p>The Office for Academic &amp; Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for summer Orientation Advisors! As an advisor, you would attend Orientation sessions where you would meet with undergraduate students one-on-one to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, all training necessary will be provided!</p>
    <p><strong>Besides compensation, this is an excellent opportunity to gain professional and interpersonal experience.</strong> Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.</p>
    <ul><li>Graduate students are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per all-day session and $50 per evening session.</li></ul>
    <p><strong>More details are provided in the application attached, which is due </strong><a href="https://advising.umbc.edu/orientation_upload/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span><strong>HERE</strong></span></a><span><strong> by May 1, 2020</strong>. The Office for Academic &amp; Pre-Professional Advising will also be hosting a number of informational sessions for those who may be interested:</span></p>

    <li>Wednesday, March 11, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)</li>
    <li>Thursday, March 26, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)</li>
    <li>Monday, April 6, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)</li>
    <li>Thursday, April 16, 4:30-5:30 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)</li>
    </ul>
    <p>Finally, if you are a graduate student with an existing assistantship, you will be required to submit a “Request for Additional Employment” along with your application by the same date. Please note the form must be signed by your Graduate Program Coordinator/Director and Dr. Jeffrey Halverson before submission.     <p><span>We have been contacted by </span>Dr. David L. Di Maria, Associate Vice Provost for International Education about a unique opportunity. <span>The Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research seeks to conduct and promote high quality research to help inform policymakers in Ras Al Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates, and broader Gulf region. To this end, the Foundation welcomes proposals from scholars in a wide range of disciplines and professional fields that address issues related to its research priority areas of education, health and well-being, and urban development and planning. Grant opportunities fall under the following categories:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <a href="http://www.alqasimifoundation.com/en/what-we-do-l3/2/doctoral-research-grants" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Doctoral Research Grants</a>: <span>Support PhD students in carrying out field research as part of their dissertation data collection. Comparative proposals are welcome as long as Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE are a significant research site. The award covers return economy airfares, furnished in-country accommodation (up to 12 months), and a modest cost of living stipend. Office space and research support are also provided.</span>
    </li>
    <li>
    <a href="http://www.alqasimifoundation.com/en/what-we-do-l3/3/faculty-research-grants" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Faculty Research Grants</a>: <span>Support current faculty in conducting field research in Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE. The grant includes return economy airfares, in-country accommodation (up to 2 months), per diem, and research support. Depending on the project, additional funding may be allocated to cover actual research expenses.</span>

    <strong>Fully funded BioEngineering Summer opportunity for grad students in the rainforests of Borneo and Singapore! Applications due March 1.</strong><div><strong><br></strong></div>

    <p>IRES PROGRAM ON AUTONOMY IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS (for graduate students): Participants will study autonomous mobility in complex natural environments based on flying and gliding rainforest animals with the help of an interdisciplinary mentor network located in Korea, Singapore, and Brunei. Students will get an opportunity throughout the program to participate in professional development opportunities for IRES scholars and their mentors, led by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The 13-week summer program will start with an orientation week at the Virginia Tech campus followed by a modular sequence of setup with an engineering mentor at either KAIST or the National University of Singapore (NUS), a biology immersion in Borneo at the University of Brunei (UBD), and finally a data analysis/engineering integration module at KAIST. <strong><em><u>The program will cover all cost and pay a $5000 fellowship to each participant.  </u></em></strong>Participants must be US-citizens/Greencard holders and graduate students.     <div>The LLC Program is honoring the legacy of the late <strong>Dr. Cedric Herring</strong>, former director and professor of the program, by sponsoring an annual symposium in his name. <br>

    <div>Our event begins at 11:00am on March 24th in the AOK Library and will be comprised of four panel discussions about the intersectionality that exists between critical diversity and career development and mentorship. The symposium will culminate with a keynote address by <strong>Dr. Ibram X. Kendi</strong> at 5:00pm. Dr. Kendi's latest book, <em>How to be an Antiracist</em>, will be on sale at a book signing immediately after his speech.</div>

<Title>New version-NSF Proposal &amp; Award Policies &amp; Procedures Guide</Title>

    <div>NSF has released a new version of the Proposal &amp; Award Policies &amp; Procedures guide (PAPPG) (NSF 20-1)</div>

    <p>The new PAPPG will be effective for <strong>proposals submitted or due, and awards made, on or after June 1, 2020</strong>. Significant changes include:<br><br></p>
    <ul>
    <li>NSF will require use of an NSF-approved format in submission of the biographical sketch and current and pending support documents, once the PAPPG (NSF 20-1) becomes effective;<br><br>
    </li>
    <ul>
    <li>NSF is partnering with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to use <a href="https://www.eiseverywhere.com/emarketing/go.php?i=747369&amp;e=Y2FtZXJvbjJAdW1iYy5lZHU=&amp;l=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sciencv/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SciENcv: Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae</a> as an NSF-approved format for preparation of both documents.<br><br>
    </li>
    <li>Use of an NSF-approved format will not be required until implementation of PAPPG 20-1 on June 1, 2020.<br><br>
    </li>
    <li>To assist the community, NSF has developed websites with additional information for the preparation of the <a href="https://www.eiseverywhere.com/emarketing/go.php?i=747369&amp;e=Y2FtZXJvbjJAdW1iYy5lZHU=&amp;l=https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/biosketch.jsp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">biographical sketch</a> and <a href="https://www.eiseverywhere.com/emarketing/go.php?i=747369&amp;e=Y2FtZXJvbjJAdW1iYy5lZHU=&amp;l=https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/cps.jsp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">current and pending support</a>.<br><br>
    </li>
    </ul>
    <li>New requirement for proposing organizations to submit government-wide representations and certifications in the System for Award Management (SAM);<br><br>
    </li>
    <li>New requirement for providing e-mail documentation of Program Officer approval for the submission of RAPID and EAGER proposals; and<br><br>
    </li>
    <li>Clarifications to current and pending support coverage as well as other changes throughout the document.</li>
    </ul>
    <p><br></p>
    <p>You are encouraged to review the by-chapter summary of changes provided in the Introduction section of the PAPPG.</p>
    <p>While this version of the PAPPG becomes effective on June 1, 2020, in the interim, the guidelines contained in the current PAPPG (NSF 19-1) continue to apply.</p>
    <p>Additionally NSF has published a FAQ for the updates to the NSF current and pending.  NSF will no longer accept Current and Pending document not prepared using an NSF approved generation tool.  More details can be found in the attached document (please download FAQ document below). </p>
