Story Work for a Just Future: Exploring Diverse Experiences and Methods within an International Community of Practice

9th International Digital Storytelling Conference

March 30-April 1, 2020

Loughborough University, UK

Call for Papers and Presentation Proposals

Storytelling has been defined as ‘the artform of social interaction,’ not only for its inner dynamics, but also for its power to unlock grass-roots knowledge, explore dilemmas, develop community resilience, engender change.

Stories can generate empathy and trust in the audience and at the same time demonstrate their usefulness because they have the power to give meaning to human behaviors and to trigger emotions.

The conference is part of a multi-institutional, multinational, two-year process and program – organized in collaboration with UMBC, StoryCenter, Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access, Montgomery College, and Patient Voices (UK) – that includes a series of follow-on activities in the Washington, D.C. area and in Maryland in 2021.

We are interested in proposals that will explore issues related to (but not limited to) the following sub-themes:

[Past] Unwanted legacies and key learning to carry forward: difficult pasts; traumatic transitions; post-conflict scenarios; lessons learned from our histories; place-based learning and research; reflective learning.

[Present] Urgent story work: climate change; health; migration; social justice; education and action; deindustrialization, development, gentrification and displacement.

[Future] Speculative futures: building communities; crossing boundaries; human/animal and human/landscape relations; new forms of conversation; new digital environments, platforms and applications; storytelling for evaluation; curation; dissemination and storyteller safety.

Abstracts are due October 15, 2019. Visit dst2020.orgfor more information.

Interested in forming a GSO this year?

<Tagline>Register by October 4th!</Tagline>

Are you interested in forming a Graduate Student Organization (GSO) this year? If so, please fill out the GSA’s online registration form by October 4, 2019 and this will ensure that your organization will be eligible for GSA funding this year.

Due to GSA’s senate restructure, GSO representatives will no longer be required to attend monthly GSA Senate meetings. GSOs are only required to submit two points of contact who will be added to our GSO email list so we can more easily communicate with you throughout the year. The structure of the group's leadership can be left up the GSO as well. Please note that while GSOs no longer need to attend our monthly GSA Senate meetings, we welcome any GSO member to attend; you can find the list of Senate meeting dates here.

After registering, GSOs can also begin applying for event funding by filling out an Allocation Request Form. All Allocation request forms will be reviewed monthly by the Grants Review Panel and you will receive communication from the GSA Community Liaison regarding the status of your request as well as instructions for reimbursement.

This year, the GSA Senators representing the 3 different colleges (COEIT, CAHSS and CNMS) as well as the Non-Academic GSOs will be hosting town halls aimed at their college or group. Once we have set those dates, we will be in touch so you may spread the word to your peers and departments.

Once all GSOs are registered, we will also offer training sessions to review event planning and reimbursement procedures, more information on those coming soon.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we are looking forward to your participation this year!

The American Sociological Association (ASA) encourages applications for the Community Action Research Initiative (CARI) grants. CARI grants are for projects that bring social science knowledge and methods to bear in addressing community-based problems. Applicants must be sociologists seeking to work with community organizations or community action initiatives.

Applications are encouraged from sociologists working in a variety of work settings including academic institutions, research institutes, private and non-profit organizations, and government agencies. Graduate students are eligible to apply, but CARI funds cannot be used to support dissertation research. While ASA membership is not a criterion for applying, it is required to receive a grant. All ASA members are obligated to follow the ASA Code of Ethics, and grantees must provide pertinent IRB approval if necessary. Grants are for up to $3,000 of direct costs.
