Named after Dr. Jodi Crandall, LLC’s founder and professor emerita, this fellowship provides current LLC doctoral students with the means to conduct collaborative interdisciplinary research. This research might be related to dissertation research, but should not be their actual dissertation research.

All applicants must submit:
· a one-page proposal which includes a description of the specific project, its relevance to LLC, and its relevance (if any) to dissertation research

More than one award may be made per year, but no award will be greater than $1,500.

In a time of profound civic challenges, can higher education be a catalyst for a democratic awakening? Harry Boyte, Senior Scholar in Public Work Philosophy, Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship, Augsburg University, will share evidence that it can be, including pioneering initiatives at UMBC and other institutions that are demonstrating the viability of a politics of public work that bridges divides and develops civic agency. Boyte also will discuss his new book Awakening Democracy Through Public Work: Pedagogies of Empowerment.

]]>This international conference aims to map out current approaches to interculturality in teacher education and training around the world. The organisers are especially interested in critical perspectives. For example, in relation to culture, Ogay & Edelmann (2016) call for ‘taking culture seriously’ – without throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Abdallah-Pretceille (2003) has coined the concept of culturality to indicate the need to work from an understanding of culture that is changeable and contextually-situated (see also Dervin, 2016). Some perspectives have tried to do away with culturalism (culture as an explanation for all) and attempted to limit essentialism. There also seems to be a shared awareness of the danger of reinforcing ethnocentrism (believing that one’s group/culture is better than others) and “racism without race”.

The Department of Anthropology and East Asian Studies at Oberlin College invite applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences Appointment to this position will be for a term of two years, beginning Fall 2019 and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. The fellow will be housed in the Department of Anthropology. The position is suported by an endowment grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The incumbent will teach courses in the general area of anthropology (cultural and/or linguistic), environment, and East Asia. The fellow will be expected to teach a 1-1 course load per year, including courses at the introductory, intermediate and advanced level, and to participate in programming through Oberlin College’s implementation grant through the Henry Luce Foundation’s Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (http://languages.oberlin.edu/blogs/liase/).

The Institute for Humane Studies is offering to fund four semester-long sabbaticals for the study, research, and teaching of classical liberal ideas.

IHS traditionally works with academics in the fields of economics, political science, philosophy, history, and law. Scholars in other disciplines are welcome to apply. ACLS invites applications for the ninth competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. This year, the program will place up to 21 recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences in two-year term staff positions at partnering organizations in government and the nonprofit sector. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and receive professional mentoring. Fellows receive a stipend of $68,000 per year and have access to individual health insurance, a relocation allowance, and up to $3,000 to be used toward professional development activities over the course of the fellowship term.
