TIRF Doctoral Dissertation Grants

<Tagline>Funding opportunity for doctoral students</Tagline>

award ($5000) some years ago. In fact, her application was rated as the
highest of those funded that year.

TIRF – The
International Research Foundation for English Language Education – is
pleased to announce its 2016 Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG)
competition. Grants of up to US $5,000 will be made to successful
applicants investigating any of the following topics:

Digital Technology in Language Education

English as a Medium of Instruction

Language Assessment

Language Planning & Policy

Language Teacher Education

Plurilingualism in Business, Industry, the Professions, and Educational Contexts

Students’ Age and Effective English Language Education in Schools

Applicants
must be enrolled in a legitimate doctoral program and must have been
advanced to candidacy. That is, they must have completed any required
coursework and/or examinations, and must have had their research plan
officially approved by their university committee.

TIRF
is pleased to note that half of the available funding for the 2016 DDG
competition will be used to support doctoral candidates’ research at
universities in the countries on the OECD DAC list of nations.
These monies will also be used to fund candidates’ research whose work
has the potential for positive impact in countries on the OECD DAC list.

TIRF
is particularly interested in research proposals that have clear
implications for policy makers and others in positions to make decisions
about English language education practices. Thus doctoral students from
countries on the OECD DAC list are eligible, as are candidates whose
work has the potential to directly and positively influence English
    language education in those countries.

The
application deadline is Wednesday, April 20, 2016. For further

CFP: Lavender Languages & Linguistics 24

<Tagline>University of Nottingham, 28-30 April 2017</Tagline>

    Description
The Lavender Languages & Linguistics conference series has a rich history of examining language use and representation in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and/or queer life, as well as language and sexuality more broadly. In April 2017, LavLang will be held in the UK for the first time, having been hosted annually by American University (Washington, D.C.) since 1993. We anticipate that, by bringing LavLang24 to Europe, more students and scholars with an interest in language and sexuality will be able to join our conversation.

Keynote speakers are: Dr Helen Sauntson, York St John University (UK), and Professor Paul Baker, Lancaster University (UK). The conference will also include remarks on the past and future of language and sexuality research by Professor William Leap, American University (USA).
The conference series proudly maintains a "no attitude" atmosphere, which will continue at LavLang24 in Nottingham: all attendees should feel welcome in what will be a supportive and collaborative space.

Call for papers
We invite abstracts for presentations which explore both macro and micro contexts, but which acknowledge the need to position research into site-specific practices within broader contexts of social, cultural and linguistic theory. Papers will be presented in English, but research on all linguistic contexts is welcomed and encouraged. Possible topics include, but are by no means limited to:

Language, sexuality and pedagogy

LGBTQ+ discourse

Literary and media representations of LGBTQ+ life

(Anti)homophobic and transphobic discourses, and other languages of discrimination

Pornography and/or the language of desire

Queer linguistics and (hetero/homo)normativity

Variationist approaches to LGBTQ+ language/identity

Intersectionality, language, and sexual identity

Language, sexuality, and affect

Abstracts are invited for individual papers, poster presentations, and panels. Panel organizers are responsible for the invitation and selection of abstracts, and the submission of a panel proposal: there should be between 4-8 papers included in a panel. You are welcome to advertise a call for submissions to your panel via our website, where we will have a section entitled ‘Sessions under development’; please contact lucy.jones@nottingham.ac.uk to arrange this.

All abstracts should be no more than 250 words. Proposals for panels should include an overall abstract (also 250 words) as well as titles and abstracts for all intended panel members. All paper presentations, including those within panels, will be a maximum of 20 minutes.

Deadline for individual abstracts and panel proposals: 3rd October 2016
Abstract submissions will open in June 2016 via our website www.nottingham.ac.uk/go/lavlang24.

Follow us on www.facebook.com/lavlang & www.twitter.com/Lavlang (using the hashtag #LavLang24).
The UMBC Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship

Application Deadline: Friday, April 29, 2016

The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.

The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.

Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.

Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Summer 2016. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Summer is a total stipend of $2,996.32 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.

To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:

be in good academic standing;

submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and

Applications for Summer 2016 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School until 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 29, 2016. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by May 13, 2016. Selection will be based on the extent of convincing evidence that the award will provide the critical element need to complete the dissertation

Discussion: Flipped classrooms turn the traditional teaching model on its head by introducing students to new concepts outside of class (rather than through lectures) and using class time to deepen that knowledge through exercises and other activities. This kind of format can fuel collaborative learning and strengthen understanding of complex topics. Join us to learn how this design works in practice and join a discussion on how it can be applied to the STEM classroom.

The PROMISE AGEP enjoys a partnership with the Ana G. Méndez University System in Puerto Rico, with campuses in Florida (Orlanda and Tampa Bay), and Maryland (Wheaton). The Ana G. Méndez University (AGMUS) offers a unique degree program for adult learners, using a dual language model of Spanish and English. You can read more about the Capital Area Campus on Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton, Maryland here: http://www.suagm.edu/capitalareacampus/. The Maryland Capital Area Campus is a hub or center for three universities in Puerto Rico, offering particular courses and degrees from each campus. In this way, professionals who want to have careers that utilize two languages, can receive their undergraduate and/or graduate degrees using the Dual-Language degree model here in Maryland without having to go to Puerto Rico.

The Chancellor of AGMUS, Dr. Carlos Padin and other faculty from the Puerto Rico campus, along with the Capital Area Campus Director (president) Silvia Navarro and the Academic Director, Ivette Cruz, have participated in SSI, and have been great supporters of PROMISE. The Capital Area Campus came to UMBC last semester to provide a system-wide seminar that discussed the opportunities at the AGMUS campus in Maryland. AGMUS is offering additional courses for teaching, and they offer these to you. You may take the asynchronous courses online, or come to the Capital Area Campus in Wheaton, Maryland to attend in person. Course dates, times, and the opportunity to create an account for complementary registration can be found here, http://agmus.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse.

Ivette Cruz, Academic Director of the Capital Area Campus Invites You!

The list below was provided by Ivette Cruz, Academic Director – CAC, who thought that these courses would be of interest to you. She is looking forward to having graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from our institutions participate! AGMUS offers these opportunities to PROMISE in hopes of providing professional development and interest in becoming a bilingual professional, and toward inviting you to apply for their faculty job openings, as available.

Courses Developed for AGMUS Faculty are Offered to Participants of PROMISE

The courses below are provided for the AGMUS faculty. They are being offered to you as part of the “and the professoriate” part of the PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP).
