New Biomedical Engineering Society - Student Chapter

<Tagline>Grad students, faculty, and staff invited to join</Tagline>

    Announcement: Establishment
of a new professional chapter on campus, Biomedical Engineering
Society (BMES). Biomedical engineering is an unique field in that it is
extremely multidisciplinary and collaborative; this field recruits
students and professionals from departments such as ChemE, CompE, MechE,
Biology, Chemistry and Information Systems to cooperate on fields such
as tissue, genetic, and pharmaceutical engineering, biotechnology,
biomedical devices and instrumentation, medical robotics, and
    prosthetics.

Our
chapter’s main focus is to educate members regarding the variety of BME
related industries in the area by having frequent guest speakers and
site visits from industries such as Osiris-stem cell therapy,
MedImmune-biopharmaceutical, UMBC incubator, GE Heathcare, etc. Besides
educating members, these speaker and visitation events are also used to
facilitate students-professional networking and exposure to the array of
job opportunities in BME related industries. Also, members will have
the opportunity to learn about discoveries and innovations in the BME
field through facilitated discussions each meeting. In addition, our
chapter is planning on having engineering faculty and student social
events, peer mentoring, and outreach and volunteer events.

Both
undergraduate and graduate students of UMBC are welcome. Since we are a
newly found organization and therefore very member-focused, we strongly
encourage our members to suggest site visits and events they would like
to engage in. Our first meeting is Wednesday October 5th at noon in ITE229 with subsequent meetings on every other Wednesday. We’ll talk about
recent exciting innovations in the BME field, future planned events,
visits and speakers, and take suggestions on other events and site
    visits we can offer.

Please
email our secretary Phillip Kang (pkang1@umbc.edu) if you’re interested
in joining the club or to be enrolled in our email list. Please mark

"Only at UMBC"

At a recent gathering, UMBC Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young asked a group of students what made UMBC truly distinctive: the things you find only at UMBC. Maleshia Jones, President of UMBC's chapter of the National Society for Black Engineers, responded that she had already started her own list, which she had posted on her blog. Here's Maleshia's blog post. What a great idea!

My "only at UMBC" list would include:

Only at UMBC is the largest indoor open space on campus lined with giant chess pieces

Only at UMBC do students frequently practice dances, play Go and Chess, study, and hold student organization meetings in the same space (the Student Orgs Space on The Commons' 2nd floor) at the same time

Only at UMBC is the big, crazy, fun night before classes start each fall called Big Crazy Fun Night

Only at UMBC does the SGA award large grants to students to back their proposals to improve some aspect of the campus (through the Prove It! competition, which will take place later this semester).

OK, that last one isn't really "only at UMBC," because Prove It! has been imitated on other campuses. But it's a UMBC original.

What's on your list?

The Real Reason I Like Cold Weather

I grew up between the desert and the ocean, in a place known around the world for its mild weather. Sunny days in the San Fernando Valley were a given. Nobody made alternate plans in case of rain, and the temperature never dipped below freezing. My heaviest coat was basically a windbreaker.

Before I started working at UMBC in 2003, I had lived in Southern California for nearly all of my 36 years. People on campus asked me all the time what could possibly have motivated me to leave paradise for . . . this.

I admit that I didn't come to Baltimore for the weather. But I am a big fan of the rain, sleet and snow. I could live without the tear-inducing blasts of frigid wind plaguing Commons Drive on winter mornings, but that aside, I love the cold.

Cold, wet weather reminds me that I came here by choice, and that I have the power to shape my life, my career and my contributions. No mere inertia or taken-for-granted assumptions about my destiny hold me here. Against the 75-degrees-and-sunny backdrop of my former life, snowflakes and raindrops are symbols of freedom and personal agency.

I think everyone could use those symbols, those reminders to choose and not simply surrender to the tug and pull of the taken-for-granted. Maybe you have your symbols too.

Summers are very different too: July and August in Southern California are not nearly as moist as they are here. So I must also treasure the heat and humidity as symbols of freedom, right? But no. They just make me sweat.

Research and Perspective (featuring Eliana Nessaiver)

Conducting scholarly research means looking at the world through a new lens. You question your assumptions; you imagine alternative explanations for conditions commonly taken for granted. Your sense of the world expands to encompass new uncertainties and points of flexibility. You start to see connections and openings that had been invisible to you.

Developing this critical eye is a key to success, not just as a researcher but also as a leader and agent of change. If you want to make a difference in the world, it helps to be able to recognize the subtle forces that shape situations, imagine alternative futures, and spot openings for action.

In this post and two others in the coming weeks, I'll feature accounts from UMBC undergraduates of how participation in research is expanding their perspectives and preparing them for the challenges and opportunities ahead. First up is Eliana Nessaiver, INDS major:

Undergraduate research is a unique experience that is at the same time educational and fascinating. My research focused on evaluating the mid Atlantic offshore wind energy resource – or, put the way I say it when not presenting my research to a scientific body, seeing if Maryland is windy enough to put up some wind turbines.

The research had nothing to do with my major, interdisciplinary studies in medical imaging, but that didn’t impact the effect of the experience on my academic life – short and long term. I learned to get organized, to work independently, to pinpoint when I was confused and ask the right clarifying questions. I learned just how relevant the seemingly dry research done in a cloistered lab can be to the wider community. Every time I heard the phrase “wind energy” on the radio, I found myself turning up the volume. This was why I was going to school and struggling to earn a difficult degree. Not for some manufactured class project (although don’t get me wrong, those can be interesting as well,) but for the application of my education to real-world problems, with personal guidance from an interested and motivating professor. This experience crystalized my decision to pursue a PhD after I graduate from UMBC, and my research background gave me the skills I needed for the research position I held at Johns Hopkins University this past summer.

Undergraduate research is a facet of UMBC that should not be overlooked by those who want to put an extra spark into their undergraduate education. The three semesters I spent on this project are three I will certainly never regret, or forget.
