The Contested Legacy of September 12th The days after September 11, 2001 had a dreamlike quality: painted in brilliant colors but blurry at the edges, as if the strange scenes could dissolve at any time into the more concrete, familiar reality of the vanished past. In that time before Facebook and smart phones we were linked by our television sets, captivated by images of destruction and grief, calls for vengeance and tolerance, and a massive mobilization of resources to secure the homeland.

After the first, dark day of utter helplessness, a new sensibility rapidly took hold. We felt an overpowering need to connect with each other, express our affiliation, and reassure ourselves of our resilience and strength. We reached out, everywhere and all at once: giving our blood and money so rapidly that we overwhelmed the agencies trying to collect and distribute them, and unfurling American flags in our windows and on our balconies. There was ugliness, too, as deluded haters assaulted Muslims (or people they imagined might be) and attacked their property. But at least for a few weeks, it was possible to see those ubiquitous flags as harbingers of a new era of unity and common purpose, in which we might pool our energies to help each other heal, and emerge a stronger nation. We had become newly visible to each other, and, spontaneously, we were working collectively to great effect. What could we not now accomplish together?

But alas. That galvanizing sense of purpose proved to be a powerful temptation to people with agendas beyond Americans’ unity and civic engagement. As the most hawkish political leaders and groups campaigning for new civil liberties restrictions began wrapping themselves in the flag, I sensed the meaning of the flag in my own window being co-opted. Ten years later, some activists invoke the surge of patriotism and fellowship after September 11th as a call to arms for those who believe government efforts to promote the general welfare violate individuals’ right to be left alone.

I draw a different lesson. For a few weeks in 2001, all we wanted to do was help and support each other, and we found that we could. Government was not an enemy but a resource, a forum for us to come together as a people. We were active and we were determined, and we did a lot of good. That energy and potential is still within us, however latent, perhaps one day to be released again through some combination of crisis, opportunity, leadership and will.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: Since September 2010

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Communications Manager in the Office of Institutional Advancement (focus: social sciences)
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I promote visibility of UMBC’s social science programs and faculty through media.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:  I particularly enjoy meeting with faculty, staff, students and alumni to learn about their research, publications, career trajectories and interests. My degrees are in anthropology and I’m always fascinated to hear my friends' and colleagues' unique life stories. I also enjoy transforming those narratives into press releases, magazine articles, blog posts and videos, to share them with others.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:  Nothing can take the place of a supportive work environment full of people who are passionate about their pursuits.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A:  Empathy. I strive to remember that conflicts often arise due to misunderstanding, misattribution or a lack of information rather than true disagreement, and that people convey their thoughts and feelings in diverse ways. Building relationships is a labor- and time-intensive process, but an educational one – both for learning about others and ourselves.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A:  I applied for my UMBC position a week before my daughter was born and visited campus for the first time a week after she was born, so she has spent her whole life as part of the UMBC community!

A: Helping students find the leader in them and helping them gain a well rounded college experience.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:  Helping others grow and bring out their best potentials, helping in creating family and community on campus.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:  Being involved on campus makes a world of difference when defining your UMBC emperience.

A:  Competing dance teams; it just makes me feel inspired in a different way.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: UMBC is a beautiful campus, I think as a student if you ever want to get away from your busy schedule one of my favorite spots to sit and think is the bench right in front of undergraduate admissions. It is a really nice and peaceful place to sit right in front of the lake and do nothing but relax.

And there's another kind of community spirit that involves working relentlessly to make a place the very best it can be, loving it even as you're trying to improve it. The Student Events Board embodies the latter spirit: UMBC black and gold to the core, but endlessly striving to take students' excitement and enjoyment of this campus to another level.

If you had fun on campus last week, there's a good chance SEB had something to do with it. They were the students in the orange or purple shirts handing you that cotton candy or popcorn, cooking up your crepes, singing out your Public Service Announcements, and handing you prizes when you won at your carnival games. They also were helping you make the best out of blackouts and thunderstorms, and spontaneously inventing random community-building nuttiness. And behind the scenes, they were spending hours moving, setting up, taking down and cleaning up equipment, and gearing up for a packed schedule of events beyond Welcome Week.

Sometimes SEB members get to spend a few minutes with the big name acts that come to campus. But as awesome as it might be to snap a photo with Snoop Dogg, most of what SEB'ers do is far less glamorous. For all of their hard work, I've never known any SEB success to be publicly associated with any member by name. Instead, SEB is about teamwork, patience, humor and collective achievement. And sometimes it's is about absorbing criticism, because not every event works out as well as members hope (like the foam party that fell victim to a hurricane and then a power outage), and not every act can appeal equally to everyone in the community.

So thanks for a great start to the semester, SEB. I'm really glad you do what you do.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: I have been at UMBC for 3 years.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Student Government Association (SGA) Senator

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Working to enact new ideas and policies for undergraduate students. 

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:  Meeting and conversing with students and fellow colleagues. It really allows me to understand what people really think about UMBC. I also enjoying working with my fellow senators in order to create a much better community on campus. Hearing different opinions on a certain policy, and reasonings as to why, allows me to think from a different stand point, rather than my own.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:  Write your notes down on paper, no seriously! Highlighting will be the death of you! especially if you are a Political Science Major. With 200 plus pages of reading a week, there is no way to fathom highlighting! Also, there is something out there for everyone, so go and find it!

A:  90's cartoons! The 90's are all that!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I recommend every Friday night should be Golden Gate Chinese food night! They have the best Szechuan Chicken in the town! Don't forget you can order Papa John's Pizza with Flex Dollars! Also, if you are looking to meet new people, head over to the Student Orgs space and drop a hello to anyone, they're all friendly!
